I don’t really know what to think when it comes to string theory. The physicists at my uni all seem to share the opinion that it’s a load of bullcrap, but most of them have never even studied general relativity, so I don’t know if their opinions can be trusted. They seem to think that ‘near-untestable’ implies ‘incorrect’, which is something I’d definitely have to disagree with. It’s fine to remain skeptical, but I don’t think we can discount it entirely just yet. The simple fact that it’s internally mathematically consistent should be enough for people to pay it more attention. Of course, I say that without having read from the opposing side of the argument, so my opinion is liable to change.
