And the only reason I got a B in French is because I spent a disproportionate amount of time studying for it. For other classes, I could scrape by by doing the minimally required amount of work and get As every time, but for French, I actually had to put in effort. The class was quite rigorous and challenging, and we had to do debates in French, read actual French newspapers, write essays on movies (which wasn’t so bad until they stopped doing subtitles), etc. And then there were the tests. Oh God. We were expected to know the conjugations of every single verb tense, and when to correctly use them, and which words to use in the context. Worst of all, the word banks actually made things even more confusing because there were way more choices than necessary and a bunch of words seemed interchangeable. The oral exams were easy in comparison, but I can’t help thinking that it hurt me in the long run. I tried, I really did, and through pure memorization, I managed to get a B in the class, and promptly forgot most of it after I finished.
