Comcept (the company that Keiji Inafune founded when he left Capcom) are planning to make a game very similar to Mega Man.

Commentary: I am slightly worried since normally spiritual successors take the place of the original, destroying any chances of continuation. I hope this isn’t the case.

I doubt it – these IPs aren’t even being made by the same company.
If anything, I’d be worried that Capcom is going to focus too much on “westernizing” the company (which hasn’t gone well thus far) and leave old IPs behind, including Mega Man. However, there’s some hope for the original franchise, considering that they’re rebooting Strider after rebooting Darkstalkers and that they’re putting the Blue Bomber in SSB4.

Query:But wasn’t there some similar case involving guilty gear?

I’m assuming you’re talking about the BlazBlue series. And no, it’s not really all that similar. Both Blazblue and Guilty Gear belong to Aksys, so it’s more of a case of moving on to new IPs (though they are making a new Guilty Gear game). In this case, Inafune and his company are making a Mega Man game in all but name. So, technically, Mighty No. 9 is a rip-off of Mega Man. But, it’s a rip-off developed by people who had worked on multitude of awesome game and who now have creative freedom without Capcom looking over the shoulder. In other words, it’s the game that many players have been waiting for a looooooong time.
Hope that helped ^^
