Around 2000, KRON-TV Channel 4 in the San Francisco Bay Area lost it’s NBC affiliation to Channel 11 based out of San Jose. No longer able to carry big network programming they switched to an “all-news” format dedicated specifically to covering local news. Desperate to fill hours of programming each day, some might say the transition was rough. KRON-TV started covering odd and inane news items, the best example being the “phenomena” of Whistle Tip exhausts in Oakland. The breakout stars of this video were local characters Bubb Rubb and Lil’ Sis, who advocated for the use of Whistle Tips – clearly understanding that they were going to be on TV. Bubb Rubb and Lil’ Sis became instantly quotable: “WOO WOOOOO!” and “That’s only in the mornin’.”
