So I went ahead and bought a Churchill. My very first heavy, and it’s quite fun!

I won’t lie and say it’s the best money maker ever but running around with 180mm frontal armour and a gentle matchmaker is great.

It’s on sale for like 750 gold.

Oh yes, the churchill is REALLY good, you’ll have a lot of fun on this tough as a diamond tortoise. The gun has a pretty decent pen ratio, fires quickly and is pretty accurate. The armor is wonderful and the speed is really reasonable, specially with the SLR (Speed Limiter Removal). Repair costs are low and the credit making is good even when your premium is over!

Alright, first off. There are some leaked photos from the supertest of the M103 and the T110E5, the new Tier IX and Tier X American heavies….and they’re not good.

There are several bright spots though, the screens show the new stat system. The current stat system is a bit flawed. You see those ROF, Turret Traverse and maximum speed stats? That’s only achievable with 100% crew with ventilation upgrades and premium consumables and upgrades (so shell rammer for ROF and so on). So now, all they’re just making it 100% crew… nothing else. So the stats seem worst than they really are.

In addition: BATTLE OF KHARKOV SPECIAL!

Bunch of discounts on Tier 5 tanks as well as 3X XP for the first victory each day.

Sorry to double post but….

UPDATE 7.2 IS NOW LIVE

It’s about 617MB in Size and includes the following

-New Maps: Province and Live Oaks
-New American Turreted Tank Destroyers: M8A1, T49, M18 Hellcat, T25-2 and T28 Prototype
-Two new American Heavy Tanks
-22 new skills and perks for crews
-New Camouflage options
-Added new tutorial for first time players
-Economics changes
-New “qualification badges” for expert play.

With the new tutorial and reduced costs plus increased credit making for the lower tiers, this is probably the best time to join the game.

I’ve seen some TV ads claiming this game is free to play. Along with what I’m seeing in the previous post. I’m really considering getting this.

The only question is are there things you can only get by paying real money for them?

The moeny you earn in-game is called Credits or “Silver”

But their is a higher currency called “Gold” that can only be obtained with real money.

The benefits of gold include:

-Being able to purchase a “premium account” for a limited time. It gives 50% more credits and 50% more experience per battle, clean garage, the possibility of creating platoons of 3 (platoon= Party in MMORPG speak) and the possibility of starting tank companies. (Tank Companies are 15 man parties)

-Being able to convert experience earned in one tank to “free experience” to be used on any tank

-Being able to unlock additional slots in your garage (You start with a five slot garage IIRC)

-Being able to purchase a camouflage option for your tank (this is visual only, does not provide in game benefits. Think hats in TF2)

-Being able to get your crew to 100% Experience immediately.

-Convert gold to silver credits

- Buying premium “gold rounds” for your tank. These rounds have much better penetration but usually have the same or subpar damage ratings.

-Buying “Premium Tanks” that can only be bought with gold. Premium tanks already are at Elite Status and are great for earning credits, as they won’t give you further expenses (other than repairs and ammunition) with additional modules and parts and receive a bonus to their credits gain.

Premium tanks are great for farming money, which is their purpose. To offset this, they are worse than regular vehicles of a similar tier.

There you go. All in all, you really don’t need to spend any cash to get the most of the game.

The real thing that hurts is the 5 garage slots. You really need more, each garage slot costs 300 gold (about 1$) but the good news is that Wargaming has two quizzes a month where they give out free gold. I have earned 1800 gold this way, good for 6 additional garage slots!

Huh. Interesting. Guess I’ll go hit up the website after a while.

All I need to know now are 1) gamepad support? 2) best starting nation for a n00b?

Mar 31, 2012 at 06:49PM EDT

I don’t really recommend using a gamepad….I think there is support but never bothered to try it…

For a noob? Hmm…. Well stay away from French tanks. Way too technical, Americans also require a bit of skill.

I would say take the Russians and go down the T-26 -> T-46 -> T-28 line to the KV. The KV is getting nerfed next patch but it’s a lot easier than the medium line. The Russian end game heavies (IS, IS-3, IS-4) have a reputation for being…ahem…easy tanks to play (and by easy, I mean even a child can do decently in them :P )

The T-26 and T-46 have thin armour though but pack a wallop that can destroy lower tier tanks in a couple of shots.

If you want better armour, take the Germans and get the Pzkpfw35 (t) but be aware when you get the 38(t) and 38nA, you’re designated a “scout” tanks and will be thrown in matches with tier 9s :(

Want to trolol? Get the Marder 2 tank destroyer and play like a Sniper (Hide in bushes and shoot from afar). Your gun is accurate and completely ridiculous damage. In fact, you can one shot Tier 1 and 2 tanks.

Okay, so I should start as either German(Nazi) or Soviet? Sounds nice. /sarcasm I guess I’ll make it work.

The reason I asked about gamepad support is because that’s what I’m most comfortable with, seeing as I’m primarily a console gamer. I’ve got a wireless XBox 360 controller that, if I found the drivers for it, I could use for this.

Mar 31, 2012 at 09:36PM EDT

Well, a mouse gives you the precision for making shots that you need. I checked the ingame settings and there seems to be no support for joysticks or gamepads of any kind, I guess you can manually map the controls to the Xbox Controller. It’s a really simple game so the controller should have enough buttons.

You can go American tanks if you go down the heavy line to the M4 Sherman E2 but the M3 Lee is a pain. And for god sakes skip the T1 Heavy and go to the M6.

I’ll stick with the Soviets ‘til I get my feet under me, then I’ll see how well I can do with American tanks.

Anyway, thanks for helping me get set up! I appreciate it.

EDIT: I think I’ll stick with medium and/or heavy tanks, ignore self propelled guns and probably also ignore tank destroyers.

Seems like I might be able to get into this…

Heavies are the simplest to play since they’re quite straighforward brawlers. I’m not saying they don’t involve skill but mediums need to be flexible and pick their fights wisely.

I pretty much only roll medium tanks and SPGs though :)

Apr 01, 2012 at 03:55AM EDT

Yes, well, I must confess that I prefer using a flexible playing style, rather than being a specialist of any type. Guess I’ll start with Soviet heavies, but I’ll definitely be trying out mediums along the way.

Apr 01, 2012 at 03:21PM EDT

Okay, so I’ve downloaded the game and made an account.

“M477145_N1l550n”, the 1337-speaking Psycho Viking, will soon leave his mark on the World of Tanks!

Apr 01, 2012 at 04:52PM EDT

So I just bought my first 25k Gold.

Figure I’ll buy one each: basic Soviet Medium Tank, crew trained at Tank Academy; basic Soviet Heavy Tank, crew trained at Tank Academy.

I can afford that, right?

EDIT: Also, assuming I have the Gold after that, should I go ahead and purchase German equivalents?

Okay, I tried to boot up the game a while ago, but my computer locked up on me.

Take two!

Apr 04, 2012 at 07:07PM EDT

Sorry for double post(damned edit time limit), but I was just checking my modules and such when the game decided to lock up on me while I was in my garage.

Still haven’t seen battle yet. I’ll try it again in a while, later tonight.

For reference, I was trying to look at my modules and ammo for my Soviet MS-1 when it decided to screw up on me.

Well what graphics card do you have?

If you have a slow PC, there is a mod that removes much of the effects to improve performance:

No, that wasn’t it. I rebooted my computer and actually got into a couple matches.

Bit technical for my tastes, but I can see myself getting into this more and more with time. I’ll get used to it.

One of the things that tends to mess me up is how the chassis rotates separately of the turret, and how the forward and back controls are relative to that rather than the camera, like I’m used to. Not to say I can’t drive a tank in that setup, just that it will always feel a little awkward for me.

Apr 04, 2012 at 11:30PM EDT

It takes a little getting used to but the technical aspect allows skilled players to out fight players in superior tanks.

But try to use the cruise controls so simplify tank movement a bit. I know a guy who was in 200 matches before he realised that.

It’s not like I’m completely unfamiliar with the mechanics of the “chassis relative” movement style for tracked vehicles. If I’m not mistaken, Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction used this style.

Still, the technicality of the damage mechanics is actually very satisfying. Blowing the track off an enemy tank, then whittling him down while he tries to get it repaired is actually kinda cool.

But why would they show turrets being blown clean off in an advertisement if that can’t actually happen in game?

EDIT: Gimme your username for the game, Phoenix, if you don’t mind. I want to go back in, but I want to establish friends in game first.

Also, I have a mic, I’ll see if I can get it to work.

They added a lot of new explosion effects in the latest patch but no turret explosion.

Maybe in the Physics patch they will add it!

So this is a bit of a techincal question but I just downloaded the new update and when I launch the game the menu text is strange and I can’t get past the loading screen.

What the menus look like:

After loading a battle I get stuck with the loading screen still in view but I can hear the battle and see explosion effects on top of the menu. The game worked fine before this update.

Does anyone know what I can do to fix this? I’ve already reviewed their support pages.

edit: Also I can’t see or select any tanks but the default Cunningham in the hangar.

Fixed it. I simply reinstalled the game. I don’t know what was wrong but it’s fine now.

I’m FJ4 if anyone would like to play sometime.

No, they stopped announcing ETAs because people would bitch and moan if they missed it by like a month.

The trailer for update 7.3 is out. No physics and a smaller update but these are the changes:

SOVIET HEAVY LINE CHANGES:

*KV-3 moves from T6 to T7
*IS-4 moves from Tier 9 to Tier 10
*KV is split into KV-1 and KV-2
*T-150 is added as Tier 6 Heavy
*KV-4 added as Tier 8 Heavy
*ST-I added as Tier 9 Heavy
*IS-8 (T10) added as Tier 9 Heavy

You can see the changes in this screenshot from the April Fool’s video. Of course, this is not confirmed:

FRENCH PREMIUMS ADDED
*10.5 сm leFH18 B2 as a tier 4 SPG.
*FCM 36 Pak 40 as a tier 3 tank destroyer.

These tanks were in the 7.2 test server but everyone ignored them to try the M103 and T110E5

NEW MAPS:
*South Coast (subtropical mediterranian map)
*Dragon Ridge (First Chinese map!)

And of course, a great trailer to showcase these things:

ETA for the 7.3 update is Late April Early May

Wound up burning it all on American premium tanks and at the Tank Academy.

I think I’ll have to buy about 100k this time. If they’ll let me.

Well that’s great. They only let me buy 25k at a time.

Considering how I go through it, I really need to be able to get 100k before I can really get back into this…

Apr 13, 2012 at 02:24PM EDT

How is that even possible? 25k of Gold nets you a year of premium!

If you have a T-34 premium tank plus a premium account you should be making at least 100k and possibly over 200k credits every match. You will have no money problems whatsoever! What’s the holdup?

100k gold is overkill man!

As I said, I managed to rapidly spend all of 25k Gold by purchasing multiple American premium tanks and getting their crews into the Tank Academy.

Multiple tank crews going through the Academy is rather expensive.

Apr 13, 2012 at 04:58PM EDT

You don’t need 100k gold. Get 25k gold and purchase a year of premium.

With your T34 plus Premium you will be rolling in the credits and you don’t need to 100% all your crews from the start. Just use the 75% training option.

I already purchased a one year Premium subscription.

As for the crews, the higher the percentage on their skill rating, the better, right?

Apr 14, 2012 at 06:20PM EDT

Alright, I guess they only allow you to make one Gold purchase a day. Or every few days, maybe. 50k will cut it for the time being.

Yes that’s true but purchasing a 75% crew will generally serve you well and you’ll level up quickly to 100% and when upgrading to another tank, that crew can be retrained to 90% skill level using credits only.

There’s really no need to spend 1k gold every time you get a new crew.

BTW, according this post by Thee_Cheftain (Wargaming NA’s tank expert and tanker in the US Army). We might get an ANZAC Day special on April 25th!

http://forum.worldoftanks.com/index.php?/topic/110926-anzac-day-25-april-special/page__view__findpost__p__1711934

For those that don’t know, ANZAC stands for Australia and New Zealand Army Corp and ANZAC Day is the Ozzie and Kiwi equivalent to Remembrance Day in the United States.

So I just got the game working on my PC. I’ve played 2 battles so far, and I got blown up pretty quickly. The first time I was using the T1 Cunningham, the second time I was using the Leichttraktor. I’ll probably try sticking with a larger group later.

Should I be trying to replace the starter tanks ASAP? And how deep is the learning curve for this game (I’m still in the tutorial)?

Apr 27, 2012 at 08:26PM EDT

Most people only spend 2-3 battles in the starting tank before leveling up to tier II. I suggest going to Tier III and kinda learning there cause Tier IV is killer.

The main tip I can give you is to go cover to cover, don’t expose yourself in wide open areas. If you have to expose yourself, give the enemy your front armour as it is always the most powerful.

This video will explain a lot of the basic tactics that people need, Tanks are different beasts from people so a lot of FPS logic is ignored and some is more enforced:
