They recovered a capsule which they had stocked with a GPS, a Camera, a Parachute, and the Lego figure. Somehow.
I mean, come on. Amateur stitching and cloth makes a parachute that can survive a fall from near orbit?

No where in the article did it say they used a helium balloon, so it must have been a rocket.

Nice! I remember an older story of another teenager making a nuclear reactor, with a book about it and everything (called The Radioactive Boy Scout). For some reason though, he didn't wear protective clothing and ended up getting cancer. :/
