Blugh, fine…

At RandomMan’s suggestion, I currently debate myself on whether I should make a separate thread for this, because the first thought in the Derpibooru comment isn’t restricted to the brony community. However, we’ve discussed R34 for FiM, and it’s certainly not unique to the FiM fandom either.

Also, as others have said, the concept of race in fanart is pretty unique to FiM (although that is merely the trigger point for racial conversation.) Many shows already have characters with human races as most of us understand them. There are fewer shows without humans. But if you think about Sonic the Hedgehog, perhaps Digimon, or Spongebob Squarepants, you don’t really have the same issue with those shows.

Now I’ll grant that I’ve never been part of another fandom where anthropomophized animals were characters. Maybe people raeg about what race Cream or Tails should be when humanized. Pokémon has (we’re not going to talk about Jynx…) humanizations, but it removes the concept of personality and how they’re tied to culture, which is intertwined with personality. Pokemon have personalities in the anime, but their personalities and “languages” are rather basic.

But like the shows with human characters, most of them (if not all of them) are stereotypically “white” or fit in well-enough with mainstream norms. Their appearance in the show often doesn’t clash with the expectations for a white person: racially “neutral.”

(And actually, Crimson Locks, you’ll see that I recognized what you said about race and hair color with Fluttershy in the comment.)

Here is the link to the image again on Derpibooru

And here is the link to the comment. If the link to the original comment doesn’t work, then you can look for it on this page (it’s the longest comment on the first page, by far,) or you can read the copy paste in the post below:

Odd, that I’d be the one to simplify an issue, but considering that the art itself seems to be at least halfway well-done, then I’m going to call some form of racism by the fact that it (as of the moment) has 21 downvotes. It’d be one thing if it were poorly done.

…It’s not.

Do people really think the art or even the concept merits that many downvotes? Is it so bad that Fluttershy is probably Indian (I don’t think Muslim is right here) or that Twilight is likely black? Heck, like my vote, the bulk of the upvotes are probably just to counteract the downvotes.

One form of it is the fact that bronies (people in Web Culture, actually) aren’t usually involved in the humanities or the social sciences. We are often white males with a tendency for the sciences. We tend to be liberally-bent, and a little edgy. Certainly brash. But not conducive to the “fluff” that is admittedly in some humanities. If I were to seek a community that was about raising taxes to help oppressed people, then this would not be the population I would turn to. Such fields have merit that a lot of people in Web Culture don’t see, because such issues have been oversimplified or otherwise minimalized.

Women’s studies and sociology are probably seen as a waste of time or invalid logically. Some people can see the intricacies of some fields, but see interactions with people as being somewhat simplistic in comparison. In actuality, people are far more complex in that they don’t follow the same logic and they don’t weigh things in the same ways.

…Your stereotypical person in Web Culture doesn’t understand that and they honestly don’t care to, because they don’t have to deal with many black people as black people IRL. They’ll marry a kinda geeky to very geeky white girl, perhaps Asian, Most of their friends will have similar likes as them, and there aren’t many black people who are interested in Friendship is Magic, Doctor Who, Minecraft, and TF2.

As such, bronies don’t have to understand race in any detailed way in order to make their way through life. In my two plus years in lurking and interacting with the fandom, this is what I’ve found. Other “groups” of people (based upon activities and interests) tend to be more informed and be more interested in matters of race. I don’t consider it to be antagonistic or malinentioned. Bronies aren’t bad people. Generally, they’re as good as anyone else. I consider most of their takes on race to be overly simplistic.

Saying all that to say that such a mindset doesn’t predict a good score for such art. There are those who troll to get a response from those who are commenting now (probably make up some of the downvotes), those who do comment, and those who stay silent (in comment and in vote), lurk, and never get involved. Among those people and the distribution of these people, this score isn’t surprising, but it’s still a bit disappointing. It wouldn’t matter if it was Megasweet, tlm02, or a lesser known humanization fan artist, making Twilight black or Fluttershy Indian in any serious way bodes poorly for the art’s reception.

tl;dr: Bronies are a little ignorant in regards to race, but they don’t know it. That’s not their bent academically or intellectually.

I can appreciate Lefty643’s honesty, and his opinion is his own, but maybe I frown even more, because he’s being honest. And I don’t think his opinion is his unique here.

Lefty?

You see this massive wall of text of mine.

…should I be colored white in art? I can’t imagine that I appear to be like the stereotypical black person.

Just like a fraction of fanart portrays a humanized Twilight as being black, a fraction of black people really do act, put bluntly, white. Therefore, it follows that a similar fraction of black Twilight humanizations are valid, because a fraction of black people act like Twilight in the canon.

Your opinion might make more sense to me if it acknowledged that fact, but your generalization here doesn’t merit your downvote. I hope you see that.

I don’t fault you for not liking the way a black character looks. Heck, maybe you don’t like the way Fluttershy looks with dark skin and pink hair.

But I upvote and downvote based on execution and concept. If not for the massive amount of dowvotes, I wouldn’t have even bothered to vote at all. I don’t downvote BBW art even though I don’t like it. I just hide it. (Which is why I’m really glad that there’s a Favorite option now. I Favorite images based more on whether or not I like it more than whether or not I think the artist did a good job in their creating a concept or executing a concept.)

I don’t want to punish the artist for a personal preference of mine.

(Also, you can probably hide the art if you change your settings a bit. I can put whatever I want for my hiding/spoilering/visible tags by turning off the “fancy tag” settings. Let’s me punch whatever the crap I want in. Even tags that aren’t there yet.)

Lord Niggertron does nothing to help. I wish he’d go away, “but Internet.” What can you do with an notorious RPing user who’s not breaking any rules? He has a negative effect on the userbase, but it’s beyond what Derpibooru is responsible for in terms of its mission and moderation. He’s not preventing the site from hosting fanart (and bad macros and forced memes), and he’s not stirring up dissension in the userbase. It ain’t their problem, and they’d be a bit biased to ban based reasoning outside of the mission of the site.

It’s too bad his flamboyant and rather ignorant confidence combined with something almost resembling redeeming value in terms of humor actually makes people respect his words, if not agree with them. He sorta plays at reverse psychology in how he appears flippant at first and then oddly “articulate” in regards to his opinion on matters of race.

Basically, he’s Carlos Mencia by another name (a pony name, no less,) and it works here.

At the end of the day, it’s probably some white guy RPing as a “black” pony or white guy using the guise of a ponysona to push off his ideals of what is fine and what is not about racism, and the Internet is conducive to his means. It sorta grinds me that your opinion about my race is where a lot of Western people are getting their first true philosophy on race beyond “we’re all equal, period.” You’re not trained in the area, either academically or by expertise. You’re simply applying your narrowly-based logic to a situation you have no idea about (and should you actually be black, then assume I would be audibly laughing, because I would be.)

As a black guy, I regret ever having made your acquaintance. Your reputation and interaction with dozens here (and probably hundreds, if not thousands more) does more to perpetuate racism against black people than you can ever be aware of. All for the sake of your jollies. However, “because Internet” and the nature of most people in Web Culture, there’s nothing that can be done about it. You have manipulated the pond’s composition perfectly well.

I saw it fit to call you out on that. For this population, I argue that you do far worse things in regards to how people see blacks than BET does. Bronies recognize that BET isn’t indicative of all black people, but they’ll give you some credence based on the attributes you chose for your ponysona’s personality and the venue in which we interact.

I look forward to a similar function that was made for Ponibooru where I can filter out your comments.

God bless you, sir, but please stop talking like you know about issues of race. I promise that you don’t.

Not because you’re likely white, but because of what you’re saying.

--

The fact that this is even an issue of conversation is a good thing, but it may not even be all that much of an issue.

You might have gotten a bored troll who wanted to vote this up a lot with different accounts or something, or you might have gotten a few people who dislike this purely on subjective (or poorly informed objective grounds a la Lefty’s) explanations.

As soon as an image or post with any level of controversy to it gets so many downvotes on most sites, it sorta gets into a “karma spiral of doom,” where people see the score and begin to incorporate the current score into how they perceive the art. The art by itself for some isn’t enough to merit a downvote, but upon noticing the score, they begin to look for small attributes and general feelings in order to make sense of the score. Upon doing so, they become more likely to give the art a score that follows the current score. And so, you have a spiral outside of the pure matter of the art without the score.

A slightly more complex version of bandwagoning, so to speak.

For most, it might not even really be a matter of race at all. Might just be following the herd LAWLZ BRONEI PUNS.

tl;dr: I’m not naive enough to think that you read anything here that wasn’t in bold but it makes me feel better because I have to make sense of the situation without feeling bad about my fandom or myself OK GOSH.

Alright, I’m “done” (not really.) But I’ll let people ask questions and critique my thinking before adding anything else. I’m probably going to figure out a way to edit this to a General thread. I have a lot (and I mean a lot) of text that I just cut out, but I wanted to keep this as close to the original Derpibooru/fanart context as possible.

And totally off-topic, it’s so hard to have this sort of conversation on the Internet, even on a serious forum in comparison to an oral discussion. Even if you point out areas of contention statement-by-statement, the person who made the original statement (or others who are in on the conversation) basically end up having a debate on each of the five points you pointed out, because the first person doesn’t accept the rebuttal for those points based on logic that breeds even more debates until the entire conversation gets derailed.

Maybe we should just go back to blackface…

Hope you don’t mind I left a comment on it as well.

Your reasoning, as most of the time Verbose, is solid. And although there are some points I cannot relate to as others, I understand where you came from. Unfortunately not everyone bothered with reading it, but it’s the internet, no helping there.

As for your previous point that only MLP deals with race issues, that’s incorrect. Another popular fandom that deals with it is Homestuck. Although Homestuck isn’t really race issue, more body type issue (height, weight, that stuff). BUT a while ago Hussie made the “mistake” to point out that the characters were given a caucasian skin color (unlike their normal, colorless, white).

^That actually happened yes. The reasons for the change in skin color were related to an event within the comic, and it was still not their regular color, but you can understand that ignited some pretty big race discussion amongst the Homestuck fandom. Hussie later changed the update to make it read “PEACHY”, but the damage had already been done.

Wow, Verbose, that’s quite in depth. It amazes me how one little image like that can create such backlash… But, I guess the race of characters who don’t have explicit (human) races can lead to disagreements. And trolls. And a great number of rustled jimmies. But really, it’s a debate I try not to take part in. If someone imagines a humanized version of one of the characters one way, then they have every right to do so without the headcanon police harping after them.

Ah well… an ideal society the internet is not.

@Verbose

But no seriously I read most of it before I rage quit it. Only time I ‘rage’ at Race changes are in movies where well established white/black etc characters are switched out with black/white etc people. Seriously, they made the Honeymooners black! That’s like making Shaft White! I can understand the Karate Kid being black (oh and the teacher being Chinese) because they’re not the same exact characters from the original movies (as neither of their names are Daniel or Mr. Miyagi) so I like the race changing in Karate Kid 2010 (despite the fact that I honestly didn’t care for the movie that much) but when it’s like Will Smith’s idea for making Little Orphan Annie Black THAT’S when you cross the line.

So yeah when ponies (AKA the only kind of race they have there is the Earth Pony/Pegasus and Unicorn thing) are humanized I say they can be anything as I’m not intolerant towards other people’s races and beliefs…..except the Dutch.

I’m a little let down if it was figured out that easily by fans this early. I mean, I don’t really care if Twilight becomes an alicorn, but since it was predicted that easily, it feels like a bit of a letdown.

Popper will be in here in a bit with his unaligned clock to tell you, I’m sure.

Seriously though. I don’t care about the purpose of it or anything, it’s the alignment of the images on that clock that bothers me.

@ Spoilers:

Hmmm… well that’s happening. Remember, just HOW it’s going to happen will be quite a venture for Larson and the other writters. I’ll still be watching, it’s not like it’s going to change my views on the show or anything. I think it’ll still be a blast to see.

Either that or I’m underwhelming everything. :P

Seriously, you might as well just read it.
There will be literally no way that you can avoid it.
Hell, the posts on this page alone pretty much give it away already.
(BTW, I totally wanted to come up with something to say on your racism post up there because I do find the topic pretty interesting, but I think that conversation is going to be taking a backseat for a little while.)

@CrazyC
I’ll disagree with you slightly there.
I honestly don’t even remember what the images were on that clock.
It is entirely the purpose of it that annoys me.
I can’t stand the mindset of needing to predict the end of things that you love.
Yes, everyone knows that ‘nothing gold can stay’ and all that, but going around continuously predicting and lamenting the end times… just pisses me off.
Hell, it almost becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Get everyone arguing about the end of the fandom long enough and people will stop bothering with the fandom just to avoid the endless drama about whether it will end or not.
Basically this:

If something fandom-shattering is going to happen, it is going to happen.
Until then, enjoy it (and I’d say continue to enjoy it afterward too, but I know that won’t work for all).
Trying to predict ‘how close the fandom is to the tipping point’ only serves the purpose of ruining the show for people now rather than later, like when something has actually happened.

Hussie later changed the update to make it read “PEACHY”, but the damage had already been done.

It should be clarified: in Homestuck, the human characters are distinctly and canonically aracial (the trolls… well, that’s a long story). Dave Strider was, at one point, actually referred to as “Pretty fly for a Íæûë€Å guy”, which has gone back and forth over time, but Word of God is that they are of no specific race. A lot of it is helped by the humans looking like this:

This meant that fanart could have at it as they wanted. There’s art of Rose being black with blonde hair, Dave being darker-skinned, possibly mixed-race, along with an equal number of white portrayals and the occasional oddball choice. My personal headcanon is that Jade is Asian and everyone else is white, but I’ve heard of a lot of different ones, too. Like I said, the totally colorless sprites make it very easy to imagine them how you want to.

However… Three weeks ago, this happened:

Hussie made Trickster Mode, a previously non-canon easter egg, canon. Well, sorta. This week has been even more confusing than the last three. As far as we can tell, it happened, but then he went back an act, but they reference what happened in Act 6 Act 5 Act 2 (yeah, we know)…

The canonicity was followed by this:

Hussie essentially added race to Homestuck as a serious, canonical point. Tumblr SJW’s were all up in arms about it, and the “CAUCASIAN!” update was essentially a “Take That” at them to basically say “IDGAF”.

That’s when everything about it got really weird.

The fandom more or less split into two sides: Those who didn’t care about the race issue and thought that CAUCASIAN was great as a wake-up call to the crazy SJWs, and those who were offended by it and thought it went over the line. He finally caved in and changed it to “PEACHY” along with some accompanying pictures, the original page had a series of paint shades with one corresponding to | Trickster | Jane’s highlighted, if you go to that page now, it calls back to some fruit from act… Three? Four? I think it’s three – with the peach highlighted.

Now of course, an equally loud minority wants him to change it back, saying he caved in too easily. I think it’s a shame – with context, CAUCASIAN was one of the funniest jokes in Homestuck so far (along with WV’s Tab/Tab key), especially with Jake’s overreaction to it. I’m okay to see it go, but I kind of miss it, too.

tl;dr Race issues are by no means exclusive to MLP online.

Panicky spam underneath spoilers.

Derpy was only a test of our jimmies (and supplies of popcorn.)

THIS IS THE TRUE TEST.

And in all seriousness, I think the episodes will be well-written and entertaining, but I think this succinctly describes my opinion:

“FiM will not be the same after season 3. Lightning will pretty much have to strike twice if Hasbro hopes that the show will retain it’s popularity with the change in direction it will inevitably take.”

It’s going to require god-tier writing to make the show seem like FiM after this. And to expect bronies to continue to like a different show is a little too optimistic. Again, Littlest Pet Shop has a lot of the same people working on it as FiM from writers to VAs to composers, but we don’t love that show.

I’d be more trusting if everything DHX touched turned into Web gold, but Littlest Pet Shop is merely a good show. This is something in the middle.

But I am genuinely excited about one thing in the article:

Via Meghan McCarthy:
“…I think it’s going to introduce some new challenges for her.”

That sorta indicates that the writers have plans for Twilight.

And like Cadance reigns from the Crystal Empire, if Twilight can reign (or merely serve) from Ponyville, then it will go over fine, I think.

…and though princesses have specific leadership roles in pony society, being one really means “being a good pony who shares the gifts that they have been given with others,” according to McCarthy. “We’re building a very unique mythology around being a princess…”

This seems to leave some room for the Mane Six to stay together in Ponyville. You don’t break up the Mane 6. You just have to get used to a winged Twilight Sparkle.

But…

Not gonna lie…

I’m pretty danged disappointed that Twilight isn’t an unicorn anymore. After getting to like her so much as a unicorn, it’s going to take time to adjust to her being an alicorn. Sure, the personality will be the same, but in terms of fanart, I get the emotional affect from how I’ve always seen Twilight and gotten used to her.

In a way, it’s like getting to know a person and then they have plastic surgery. The personality will be the same, but it’ll take a while for you to associate that new body/face with the same emotions you had before.

It’s going to require one HELL of a season finale for an alicorn Twilight to evoke that same emotion…after just one episode.

Jan 29, 2013 at 02:38PM EST

@Larson

Fast and hilarious!

@Verbs

Basically, that’s how I sort of expected it to go if this rumor were ever proved true.
There was no way in hell that they were going to give up the other five primary characters (as well as a whole host of secondaries) just to get Twilight her position.
She’ll keep her general personality, she’ll stay in Ponyville, and she’ll continue to discover the magic of friendship through funky little adventures and stories.
She’ll just have wings now.
Maybe a few extra duties and more reverence from the townsfolk, but the writers are going to try to preserve as much of the general dynamic as possible as that is what made the show good in the first place.
I’ve said from the beginning that I don’t think it’s a very good idea, but I also don’t believe that it will completely kill the charm of the show automatically.
It will take some getting used to, and some people may not be up for that, but as long as the characterization stays strong, I’m looking forward to the changes.
Lots of new opportunities being opened up here.
(But if they try to do a ‘Twilight learns to fly’ episode before a ‘Scootaloo learns to fly/learns that she can’t fly’ one… grrr…)

Normally, I avoid spoilers and heated-topics such as these like the plague, but I’m going to make an exception in this case.

First off,

To get it out of the way, I don’t like Twilight being an alicorn either. Much like Verbose or any other Twifag, I’ve grown to like her the way she is. However, after reading both of the articles Crazy linked, we still have relatively little details about how the episode will go (or I missed something). Both of them focused almost solely on the new toys, and the Entertainment Weekly only had about a single paragraph on the upcoming episode.

For all we know, Twilight’s change could only be temporary. This could just be an episode where she learns that with power comes responsibility, and she might end up turning down her new position and return to her normal status.

In other words, I hate the idea of her being an alicorn, but I’m still going to remain calm until the episode or more info is released. And if all else fails, I always have my back-up pony Rarity to fall to.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to hide in my lurk-hole again.

I’m always optimistic about the show, I’m not one of those people (like on MLP’s facebook page) that starts playing Russian Roulette the second things start to change a bit when it comes to this show. So I believe there’s a big chance that “That” will be good or even great, and then I’ll pop open a bottle of gatorade and laugh at all the people that are literally crying over this.

You may need to hide instead of spoilering any images on Derpibooru too.

I went there, and half of the images were spoilered. Can’t see anything. I went ahead and looked, because I’m somewhere in between enjoying the excitement/anxiety and being concerned.

Oh yeah everything could be a spoiler…

Hm the finale is in about three weeks, well this means it’s time to use blinders.

But I won’t miss Derpibooru much, I just use it to find fitting imagery to prettify posts, as everything is tagged thoroughly.

Oh, and since the discussion might take a while, I’m going to post this on each page until this discussion dies down so everyone can find it:

<div class="spoiler">Whatever you want here</div>

Gets you this:

Whatever you want here

That way, if you can find the post, then you can just copy and paste it if you can’t readily remember it without having to open up a new tab or anything.

Now I have to say that the writers (i.e., Mitch Larson and Meghan McCarthy are taking this rather well and are even joking about it. I wonder if that’s confidence in what they’ve written and have likely seen the end result of or a bit of uncertainty being hidden by jest, because everything about this zealous fandom is new.

And yes, I don’t think the somber race discussion is suitable here. This is way too much fun. This is almost as exciting as the Season 2 premiere before it came out.

I know what’s going to happen!

Twilight will gain Alicorn powers, only to give them up at the end because it would take her away from her family and friends too much. Like the end of Disney’s Hercules.

And everything will be back to normal by the end…

Does it even matter at this point? We all knew it would happen eventually. Besides, all we know is she transforms, nothing else. Usually I’m hard on spoilers, but I saw this one coming and I think it’s a good thing to discuss, even ahead of time.

After all, this is a big deal that we’ve expected to happen at some point. I would really like to know what everyone else thinks this will entail. It’s going to be a lot different after it happens and we all say “that’s what I thought” or “that was definitely not what I expected”. Cat’s out of the bag, let’s see what you guys think.

Hasbro only wants to bronies get exited. But in the end.. You’ll be all like..

Nope. Confirmed for permanent.

People will be coming home from school/getting off of work for a little while still. Give it a couple of days before we stop doing the tags. I know it’s a pain in the butt, but ruining the plot for others isn’t exactly nice.

On a slightly different topic:
Verbose and any other grad student will probably frown at me for this, but I had two phone meetings with an undergrad and one grad student on Feb. 16th.
I canceled them.
For ponies.
I’m an awful person.

@Spoilers

Alright, I was keeping my peace on this because I was sure it was all just groundless rumors, but seriously? Seriously?

What’s my reaction to this? I’m not going to whine about the end of the fandom and make a doomsday clock or anything silly like that. What I am going to do is be profoundly irritated by this wholly unneccesary addition to the show. I’m sure the writers will think of a way to make it work, but I don’t think I’ll ever be able to look at those damn wings without grimacing a little bit inside.

You know, I don’t even really care about the effect this has on Twilight so much. I mean yeah, her position as a Mary Sue is now cemented for now and forever, but she should still be able to interact with her friends in more or less the same way. What really bugs me is that this completely ruins the kickass alicorn mythos. I mean, Faust’s original mythology is one of the major factors that helped elevate mlp from some vapid bullshit about tea parties and shit to this fascinating and in depth world that I could really get into. Alicorns were fucking God kings, they were special and mysterious and strange. Cadance cheapened the concept a little bit, but you could sweep that under the rug. Now you’re telling me that alicorns can be…made? Alicorns used to be elementals in pony form; They were the sun and the moon put into mortal buddies. Now you’re telling me that the horn and wings don’t designate an ethereal, almost divine status, but are simply a sign that some pony has maxed out its power level? Fuck it man

.

So you will finally ditch Twilight as “best ponei” (pfff) and accept Pinkie Pie as the unequaled best?

But what if your implied homoerotic love is our legitimate one? Then people will not spoiler tag anything!

Crap. Page get. I’ll have to make this seem more substantial than RandomMan love now.

I definitely think so. The writing and art is fantastic, and all the jokes are hilarious. My only complaint is that Pinkie doesn’t feel the same as in the show.

As was mentioned, Pinkie is kind of darker in this, but what really bugs me is that she feels like the result of flanderization for the sake of bronies. Pinkie in the show is emotional, spontaneous, giggly, and fun, whereas this Pinkie just feels random and not all there.

I got my first two issues in the other day, and I have to agree with you. She feels less cutesy-bubbly, and more on-the-edge psychopathic. The comics are obviously more aimed toward the brony community than the target audience, but they did seem to strip her of what made her so popular. And this is coming from a person who isn’t much of a Pinkie Pie fan. Maybe they’ll improve over the next few issues, but the start seems to be a little wonky on her personality.

Oh, and the final issue has a cover that features Luna. I will have this cover, even if it requires me to kill to get it.

Back to toys.

I think my only disappointment on Alicorn Twilight is that the Funko models will now probably feature her with wings. I greatly dislike the mold + glue wings they have. Oh well, I’ll still probably buy them.
