Guess I’ll take advantage of the page get:
If you were to have chessboard with Ponies as the pieces, which characters would you use to represent what pieces and why? Would you use a completely different group for black and white sides? Stick with Heros/Background Ponies or use Villains too?

(1 King, 1 Queen, 2 Rooks, 2 Bishops, 2 Knights, 8 Pawns) – both sides

Or you can just ignore this post and carry on. That’d work too.

Celestia=king, because she’s completely useless but without her the whole thing would unravel.
Twilight=queen, because she’s super powerful and is the only one that does anything. Plus, it allows me to ship her with Celestia.
Luna=bishop, because reasons.
Cadance=bishop, because she has to be the one to get killed by a pawn that you forgot could move that way, thus fulfilling her woobie status.
Applejack=knight, because, like trying to figure out where the knight can move is like trying to write her accent.
Rarity=knight, because she can only go in certain places and so is worthless.
Spike=Rook, because you completely forget about him sitting in the corner only to realize how useful he is.
Fluttershy=rook, because she minds her own business sitting in the corner, then without warning comes rushing across the board and kicks somepony’s flank.
Background ponies=pawns, because they’re only purpose is to fill out the show and die.

Neat, but I kind of wanted you guys and girls’ opinions, not someone else’s. I knew there were already some out there. If that’s what you would pick, that’s fine then – I was just wanting a more personal idea.

I do like the ‘light side’ set up from Derpy’s post.
Celestia and Luna as King and Queen is just obvious (even down to Luna seeming like she’d be far more ‘confrontational’ than Celestia), Earth ponies as rooks play on their physical strength, Pegasi as knights works with their maneuverability (and their apparent militaristic history), and unicorns as bishops work with the whole ‘upper class’ thing that they have going.
(I could see switching Pinkie and RD due to Pinkie’s ‘random’ movement and Dash’s athleticism… but I prefer the cleanliness of this design.)
Not sure I’d put the pets as pawns but the only other idea I can think of would be generic royal guards so whatever.

On the dark side, I like how the physical picture put Flim (or Flam?) in place of Blueblood.
As much of a jerk as he is, Blueblood is still technically a ‘good guy’ or at the very least ‘not evil.’
He’s just dumb and full of himself.
Flim/Flam is much more directly antagonistic.
Iron Will’s goats don’t make much sense as pawns for the same reason.
Manticores, maybe?

You know, you might think that because chess is one of my fetishes that I’d be all about ponifying that shit, but honestly, I really dislike novelty chess boards. Chess is all about pragmatism, simplicity, and elegance. It’s NOT about the pieces, it’s a game about controlling the board and dominating your opponent. Novelty chess boards just completely miss the point.

Any serious chess player will agree with me that the board Derpy posted is really quite hideous. The elegance and balance of the board has been completely shattered. A real chess board brags symmetry on multiple levels: The black and white sides are mirror images of each other, the left and right halves of a single side are mirror images (Except for the King and queen, but they look alike anyway) and the single pieces are bisymetrical (Slice a pawn in half and the two sides are mirror images.) The mlp board completely shatters this lovely symmetry: The two opposing sides of the board don’t look alike, the two seperate halves of a single side don’t look alike, and the individual pieces are highly asymetrical.

Playing a game on that board would just be awkward as hell. Since like pieces aren’t alike (the pawns dont look the same, the mated pieces dont look the same), I’d keep forgetting which piece does what, and since the coloring is so wild, it’d be harder for me to look at the board and immediately have a rough idea about my position and my opponent’s position. Like I said, chess is all about controlling the board, so anything that makes it harder for me to see what spaces I’m controlling is going to really hurt my game. It’s a chess board that’s decorative only, and for a game that is ALL about pragmatism, a board which you can’t play on is just ridiculous.

Really, the pieces are just too individualized. Chess isn’t about the individuality of the pieces; on a philosophical level, they’re all just pawns in the end. This is a game about black versus white, about two equally powered forces going against each other so that it is pure strategy that wins the day.

So yeah, I like chess and I like pony, but I’d prefer to keep them seperated thank you very much.

You know, something I really like about Rarity are her muse moments.

Honestly, I feel like you have to be an artist to really appreciate this shit. Inspiration is something you spend about 10% of the time experiencing and the other 90% of the time waiting for it. When you ‘get it’, when all the parts just seem to fall into place, it’s something not unlike religious revelation. I love seeing Rarity have ‘that moment’

I would ask her an “order” of the “products” which will be a code and signal ritual which will confuse others but would make perfect sense. Then she will go under the counter give me a small box as she walks by when so goes out for a “quick five minute break”. I will proceed with this key finding the hidden arrows leading to a secret entrance behind a grease disposal. After going through the hidden passage I will go down 10 stories of stairs. I then must put in the activation code hidden under the classified special Soda cup in the pile of garbage perfectly camouflaged. Hit the code into the number pad to this almost perfectly hidden door then it will lead to a giant room.

It has massive Star gate, which leads to Equestria, there are also plant life from the dimension from the other side growing out of the mouth of the gate. I enter, and I am in the Everfree Forest, due to humans not existing in this dimension. The mystical land and world’s life force around me surrounds me and then after a 60 second painful metamorphosis, I am now a pony and all my past memories has been turned into ponies.

The main product was priceless. But I was not an Alicorn because I would have needed to buy the Alicorn DLC pack with my purchase.

MLP is not rebooting. They are slated in the Returning Hub Original Series/Specials with New Episodes. The season premiere will occur after the R.L.Stine series starts back up (time of year not actual date).

King Sombra as Dark side King would make sense. Everyone thinks he’s a useless, slowly approaching villain. And when he’s defeated, victory to the light side was complete for the day.

Queen Crysy is a queen, since she’s the most competant villain so far.

What would you guys think if there were ever a time where shows that were once aimed at kids got a more adult themed spin-off/reboot?

Interpret that how you will, but I tend to interpret it as “Things just got serious”.

Like… I don’t know, the first Pokemon movie to… Well… the rest of Pokemon ever I guess. Or maybe A canterlot wedding to the rest of Frienship is magic.

…Except… Spread out over an entire season.

Oh great, a Japanese theme has been leaked (I listened to it, doesn’t hold a candle to Italian theme) and now all the Otaku’s can go on about how the Japanese dub is better than the English dub….just what this show always needed.

Most royalty throughout history acted very similar to Luna. From Henry chopping off his wives’ heads when they didn’t give him the right heir to the Louis’ bankrupting France and robbing the citizens blind. Being spoiled tends to make one act like a douche. It’s just a good thing when things didn’t go her way, the only thing she did was cancel the holiday.
While Luna does share the responsibility to get caught up, there’s no denying that Celestia and the government screwed things up.

I thought the point of our discussion was what makes Luna relatable. Yeah, she’s not satan or anything, and there are certainly more incorrigible figures from royalty throughout history. I get that. I’m just saying, neither Celestia nor Cadance have displayed her short temper, hence me holding her less favorably.

And, no, I still don’t believe Celestia and the government screwed up. They might have screwed up. But there is nothing in the show to confirm they had time to orient her to modern customs, or that they hadn’t already tried to, but without success. Even if they didn’t, I still believe in personal accountability. Being irritated with her poor reception is understandable, but someone with a position of leadership should still keep a calm head in such a situation.

The matter of popularity is one that can be asked of any of the minor characters. From “Sitting on a bench=human obsessed” Lyra all the way over to “May have said the word muffins in a group of ten other ponies=Muffin fetish” Derpy. Fanon plays a much larger role in character popularity then canon ever will.

Well, I guess that explains it. I’ve never cared for the fanon anywhere near as much as canon. I don’t care for all the Lyra/human jokes as much as the happy, hyperactive Lyra seen in the show. The fandom always seems to go too far with stuff; like you said, they drew upon Derpy’s first lines and gave her a full blown muffin fetish rather than depicting her as a pony who just likes muffins to a reasonable degree. It makes them seem really one-dimensional to me, and the fleshed-out characters of canon are what drew me to the show, so I guess that’s why I never really understood the appeal. Because fanon has always played a smaller role in my character preference than canon ever will.

Mysterious/tragic past+vitually no characterization+unique design=fanon orgy. Just think, there was Lonely!Luna, Biding time for revenge!Luna (Cereal Velocity even got into this one), Sexy!Luna, Prankster!Luna, Adorkable!Luna, and Trying to seek forgivenness!Luna. Almost everyone had a version of Luna they liked and that made her very popular.

It got even better when the episode aired. Instead of tearing apart the Luna fandom by picking one of the fanon’s to canonize, canon decided to buck fanon and do what it wants, creating canon!Luna. Because all of the fanons where dead, the fans were able to mourn the loss of their headcanons and embrace the real Princess of the Night.

Well, I wouldn’t really say all the fanon is dead. The fact that she was attempting to get everyponies admiration initially implies there’s a bit of truth to lonely Luna. Her awkwardness sort of makes her adorkable Luna, though CANTERLOCK may be a bit less adorkable. :P And she totally outpranks Rainbow Dash at the end! And sexy Luna?

Aside from vengeful Luna, canon incorporates a little bit of multiple fanon interpretations. So instead of being one-dimensional like fanon background ponies, she actually has the wonderful intricacies of a real personality. Canon Luna will always be best Luna as far as I’m concerned!

But seriously, AJ and Rarity have wonderful, complex personalities and deserve more love. :(

Fifths does bring up some good points. The lack of symmetry detracts from the game. I still believe novelty chess sets can work well if done correctly, though. I would make sure that the ponies that represent the same piece are the same race, and in the same pose, to better emphasize their role. Earth ponies for rooks, unicorns for bishops, and pegasi for knights sounds fitting to me. Royal guards for pawns, and Celestia for the king. The only problem I have deciding is the queen. Since she does so much in chess, I really feel like she should be Twilight Sparkle, but I believe she needs to stay in the bishop’s position. Not to spite Luna fans any more, but, let’s face it, she can’t be the queen. Maybe the auxiliary queen that you swap in once one of your pawns have reached the end of the board.

Yes you did, Luna. But don’t worry, I’m sure someday you’ll actually be awake when Canterlot is attacked. In the meanwhile, maybe Shining Armor can fill the queen’s role as captain of the royal guard? I don’t have the first clue about the other pieces for the board, though. Nightmare Moon, Discord, Chrysalis, and Sombra could all fill the role of the king or queen sufficiently, but fit nowhere else. Parasprites or changelings would form the ranks of pawns, but that’s all I’ve got.

Worthless? Knights’ odd movement pattern make them the most unpredictable and easily overlooked offensive force in my experience. Combined with their ability to jump pieces, I find them every bit as useful as the queen, if not more.

Well, if this page has all of its facts straight, we will be seeing Rarity episodes. Plural. The wait is going to be a pain one way or another, but here’s to hoping the quality and quantity will be worth it!

I was attempting to explain why Luna acted the way she did. She canceled the holiday because that’s what pissed off royalty did 1,000 years previous (or worse). When it comes to reliability, I don’t know. I guess people just like the authoritative personality just as much as the shy meek kind.

I don’t play much chess, so I don’t quite know just how super effective the knight is. What I do remember is always having to make sure he moves in the L pattern which can be a pain.

Heh, not sure if I agree on the note about Cliff hanging or not. After all, the writers did say that next season’s start is like the second and third parts.

But yeah, the final episode was wrapped up fairly well, but now we’re on a self imposed cliff-hanger about what Twilicorn means for everything else!

Does Twi panic? Does She Get new responsibilities? Are they big or small? Do they annoy the heck out of her?

And what about the cast racial imbalance? Guys, remember that Twilicorn as a thing is going to make the more mundane uses and problems of magic marginalized in favor of more fantastic problems of being an Alicorn Princess and their magic. While normal Unicorn problems are thrown aside to Rarity to hold all the weight, while Pegasi and Earth Pony problems being addressed flourish.

GAH! Sorry, personal pet issue there.

I guess the ponies didn’t wrap up winter very well where I live either, it’s been colder than it was last week!

I was up half way through the night dicking around on KYM and playing chess and put off an important term paper that was due today, so I had to pull an all nighter to finish it. Now I’ve got hours and hours of classes I need to get through and I feel exactly like this

Crazy, I blame you and your chess board inquiry. If talking about the elegance of chess hadn’t aroused my interest for the game, I wouldn’t have been up to 2 A.M. playing and could have actually caught some sleep. You should have known I have no will power when it comes to chess.

Actually, I find that pretty unlikely.
Yeah, they started the preview thing pretty late in the game (probably because they only just started realizing that a significant number of people would care), but they went at it full-force.
Once they started, we had at least a couple of minutes from each episode revealed early and their consistency through season three makes me think that they will continue the pattern for season four.

Honestly, I’d kind of rather they didn’t give us so many previews.
While it is always nice to get more pony, the constant flood of spoilers every single week does get a little annoying and has the potential to give away story elements or jokes outside of the context intended by the writers.

I’d prefer fewer spoilers this coming season. It got to the point of just being absurd this year. We pretty much knew everything about Magical Mystery Cure before it aired (we just didn’t know the extent of how far the spell went). I think it would have been better received if we hadn’t had to stew on it for 2+ weeks beforehand.

It’s been sitting around the 70° (21°) range here. The nice thing about living in the south after living in places like Missouri: winter doesn’t seem to exist. I don’t think I’ve seen it fall below freezing at all.

Just once I’d like the Hub/Hasbro/Discovery to have an episode where they don’t release anything. No clip. No synopsis. Not even a title. If someone were to look at the TV Guide it would simply be blank. The only thing they’d release is that there was a new episode that week. Then I’d bask in the glory of the fandom flipping its shit at what it all means. Is Celestia going to die? Are they putting humans in? Why haven’t they released any info?

Then, on the big day, as the anxiety and fear reaches the breaking point and the show staff troll us into oblivion, the episode airs and its normal. There’s no big twist, no death, no butthurt inducing plot. It’s just a nice standard episode. It would be the greatest trolling since the spaghetti tree prank the BBC did and I would love every second of it.

So, we all know that ponies claimed Gabe Newell quite some time ago.

So quick question, if that guy legally marries ‘Twilight Sparkle’ will he be able to adopt children? It seems like the kind of thing the Orphanages would look at and reject at first glance when this guy walks in with this Twilight Plushy saying “Me and my wife here have tried multiple times and the doctor says I can’t get her pregnant, so we were thinking of Adopting”.

Now just imagine if he DID adopt some children………Well the good thing about that is when the children are teenagers the kid’s friends won’t try to hit on his mom. But then again….having a Cartoon being your legal mother………not going to lie, that would be entertaining for a few days, until you realize what your dad is doing with that doll at…………………..OH GOD WHY DID I JUST THINK THAT?!

@Spoilers: I personally get annoyed with the spoiler clips Hasbro releases because that means that spoiler info will start flooding the image gallery because some people don’t seem to be able to grasp that not everyone wants to be spoiled. It wouldn’t be as bad if the clip was released a couple days before the episode aired, but they seem to release the clips right away and then for the next week the image galleries mostly have spoiler information about the upcoming episode. I probably would have happily not known about Twilicorn or the plot of Magical Mystery Cure before the episode aired if some people in the gallery were a little more considerate and didn’t post images about it without even as much as a nsfw tag two weeks before the episode was even supposed to air. I’m getting in a bit of a rant hear but I really hate when people give out spoilers without so much as a warning.
