>Fluttershy being boring

@Dac

I have no problem at all with someone being competitive, but Dash is a very sore loser. She’s been known to cheat and throw a fit when someone appeared to be better at something than her, and that’s just plain immature.

@BSoD

I like your thinking pal. All the ponies have their quirks and good points, after all. Fluttershy is still best pony though.

@DeadParrot

True, Dash did show underlying doubts and fears in Sonic Rainboom, and I must say I appreciated that. What’s funny is how I’ve seen some fanboys actually express their dislike of that episode because of her traces of weakness. I, of course, disagree completely. Episodes like that go a long way to adding depth to her character, making her seem more human and less like just another avatar of someone’s fantasies.

My question about is why does she put up the facade so strongly then? Is she so insecure that she feels that she must sing her own praises to feel good about herself? The Mare Do Well episode would seem to indicate that to be at least somewhat true.

@RandomMan

I think the classification of Fluttershy as “just another Moe” type character is rather unfair, actually. Moe characters in anime do tend to have very little personality sometimes, but Fluttershy is one of them. She’s actually rather complicated and relatable to many of us.

So she’s shy; that’s a perfectly legitimate personality trait, and shame on anyone who would put someone down because their shyness is “dull”. (And by the way Dac, cartoon character or not, I’m talking about anyone IRL who has these facets as well.) She’s timid and rather humble, preferring that others not make a fuss over her accomplishments or her deficiencies. Again, I see nothing wrong with that at all, in fact it’s one of the things I like about her. She’s not perfect and she’s not always predictable, and for evidence of that I would point to Suited For Success, Lesson Zero, Dragonshy, Putting Your Hoof Down, Hurricane Fluttershy, The Best Night Ever, and others. I’ve always found her to be extremely entertaining to watch, and if you don’t, quite frankly that’s just your opinion man.

If you’re going to complain about her, why not go after things that she’s done that are legitimately wrong, like stealing cake for example? I realize her personality may not appeal to everyone, and that’s fine, but there’s nothing overtly wrong with her style.

1. Orange isn’t a very good color.
2. That crappy hairstyle.
3. She’s a brute.
4. She doesn’t wash.
5. She works all day on the farm and thus smells like manure.
6. Oh, and she’s worst pony.

Now that you have seen this, you have immediately changed your mind

@Dan

I actually think it is a good thing that people feel inclined to choose a favorite pony or a least favorite immediately after analyzing the qualities of each character. That simply tells me that the writers have put that much development into each character that it is possible to make that kind of rationalization or distinction.

You can say positive and negative things about all the main characters all day:

RD = Awesome or arrogant?
Flutters = Harmonious or weak?
AJ = Constructive or tedious?
Twi = Intelligent or awkward?
Rarity = Elegant or snobby?
Pinkie = Exciting or annoying?

One could go on forever trying to decide (though personally I save myself the trouble and just admire all their strengths and forgive all their weaknesses)

I agree, but best pony? I would say she is one of the interesting six ;). And don’t forget “Green isn’t your color”.

For something different:
I am really stunned by this PMV. The quality is outstanding, so much effort, so much custom stuff – just crazy.

@Dan
People have actually complained about Dash’s stage fright in Sonic Rainboom?
I’ve never seen that before, but you are completely right.
I had always liked Dash, but that moment really ‘humanized’ her in a way that made her even better.

And, yes, I do think her attitude springs from a certain level of internal insecurity (see above).
If the facade never ever broke, then yes, she would just be a jerk.
The fact that it does bend/break at times (Sonic Rainboom, Last Roundup, Hurricane Fluttershy) really shows that there is more going on underneath the surface.
I can understand why people don’t like characters like that, since she comes off pretty arrogant because of it, but hiding behind that ‘tough mare’ mask just makes her more interesting to me.
Probably why I seem to like Gilda more than most people, too.

I believe DeadParrot said this as well, and I totally agree. All of the major characters are interesting and are nuanced enough for these kinds of conversations to occur, which is a major part of why I like the show so much in the first place. Heck, even Celestia’s had some less than shining moments to keep things interesting.

@DeadParrot

Indeed, I’m afraid I myself fall into the camp of people who don’t care much for Gilda. Obvious Fluttershy-related reasons aside, I just couldn’t sympathize with her bad attitude. However, if she were to honestly, truly realize that she had been to blame for the fallout and show some repentance, I might just learn to like her. People do change, after all, sometimes quite dramatically for the better. Who knows, maybe you guys and your Gilda-centered episode ideas may be onto something. For now though, worst griffon.

@Fifths, below

The need to win surpassing one’s desire for all else, including honesty and integrity and close personal friendships, is no more a strength than Fluttershy’s empathy is a weakness. I can see why you would find that to be an interesting thing about her, but to call it praiseworthy is a stretch.

@Dan

Honestly, I don’t think I’d like Dash half so much if it weren’t for those character flaws. What’s so compelling about a character obsessed with winning and being the best is the immense struggle they put into it, the fact that the path to glory is a thin one with pitfalls on all sides. The fact that Dash actually has times where she has to realy struggle to be the best, that she is so obsessed with hitting her goal that the threat of not reaching it threatens her cheating or having a mental breakdown, makes her extremely compelling to me. People like to say about sports or whatever that it’s all just a game, that you shouldn’t take it so seriously. For someone like Dash however, it’s not, it’s who she is, and the difference between winning and losing is the difference between life and death. I completely sympathize with the struggle to be.

Contrast to Fluttershy who seems so quick to apologize, so eager to proclaim her inadequacy. Such a character just strikes me as sad, a broken thing shuffling through the monotony of a life they don’t seem terribly well equipped for.

Well, the only aspect of Trixie’s that I like are her eyes… Yep her eyes. If you notice while most ponies’ eyes have two eye shines, hers have only one. Don’t know what it is about that fact, but it makes them seem majestic.

@Robert
What! You have an opinion that contradicts my own!

But, seriously man. She is the embodiment of all things ‘Merica! Or what they are supposed to be anyway. She is honest, hard working, stubborn, and ain’t afraid to get her hands dirty. Now I can’t argue with the fact that the rest of the Mane Six overshadow her personality with their extremes and quirks, this character has been already established as a necessary in any group (excluding us). The dependable and straight man character that is there to knock some sense into the rest of the characters’ idiosyncrasies that, though will be called the most dull, is there to keep them from going too out of line. Now we can debate whether Applejack does a good job or even does do that, but… meh.

I agree with (what came across to me as) the majority opinion. Applejack is best background pony, and as such only recieves that much love from me. If we had a really good Applejack episode that gave her some positive traits (and maybe a few negative, but not as many), I could be convinced to change my mind. But as of now there is no special reason why she should be best pony.

You all know, deep down, that Daring Do is the best pony, and to say otherwise is to say Mutt Williams was the best character in any of the Indiana Jones movies. As for best Mane 6… Take your pick.

And those two guys, KneeGrowCockslapConcussion and NiggaDickLethalErection. They are not yet ready to become true men.

Algernon wrote:

Wow, back on that topic already? That must be a new record for us. I can’t remember the last page that didn’t have a reference to porn in the brony community on it somewhere.

Anyways, I don’t see how watching porn should be considered a bad thing we should be trying to cleanse from ourselves. Of course, there are limits: if you’re watching porn where any participant involved is being abused in some way, then you’re a bad person and you should feel bad. I know it objectifies men and women for the satisfaction of the viewer, and that would normally be a bad thing in other media, but it’s kind of the whole point here. It’s just a sexual aid, so we shouldn’t expect anything deeper from it. As far as I know, most porn actors don’t mind it, so I don’t see why we should be bothered by it either.

I disagree with your statement that ‘the majority of the brony community are cloppers’. Verbose and opspe from this site ran a pretty extensive survey of the brony community recently, and they found what most of use expected: cloppers are a fairly small minority. They can be a little vocal sometimes, but it seems to me like clop-haters are even louder still (and much less friendly). They’re not quite as big a problem as you think they are (that is, if they’re really a problem at all). I also don’t think cloppers all see the ponies as mere sex objects. I’ve read many accounts where people claimed to feel strong attractions to some of the characters that weren’t sexual, and their sexual attractions emerged from that later. They’re obviously not as perverted as you’re implying.

I guess it is sorta corrupting the innocence of the show to make pornography from it, but I think a little corruption can be a good laugh at times. If this fandom cut out everything like sex and violence, it would be nowhere near as fun in my opinion. It would completely devastate the fanfic community, which often relies very heavily on things like violence, death, heartbreak and romance to tell good stories. It would also require the banishment of many of our best artists, like JJ or Megasweet. I’ve never understood why so many people feel compelled to keep everything the same as the original show, as taking a few artistic liberties with the original source material has lead to a ridiculous amount of brilliant fan content.

Anyways, I think I’m going off on a tangent here… the point is, cloppers really aren’t the bad people you think they are, and I don’t think they should be criticised for what they do. I know a few cloppers, and trust me: they are not messed-up sexual deviants (well, except maybe Brownmane…). They’re just normal people who contribute as much to this fandom as anybody else. If anything, the clop community gets on better than the brony community at large, so I’d say they’re doing a better job at sticking to the show’s morals. They’re definitely better at tolerance, that’s for sure.

It feels weird having to bring up a topic a couple of pages back that I started that no one wants to continue, but here goes nothing…

Okay, I have no solid proof that cloppers are the majority, I have some flimsy evidence, but I don’t think they’ll stand up to that survey you just mentioned. The fact that you’re backing up your claim that cloppers are the minority with a survey puts me at ease, but still, their presence is strong, like as of now when I load up an episode in youtube most likely the highest rated comment you’ll see is perverted.

I think we’ve all seen this vid before:

I’d like to point your attention to not only the comments, but the like bar as well. There are clearly more likes than dislikes. I don’t think a lot of non-brony people could stumble onto this video, and if they did, they’d most likely dislike it. Normal bronies would dislike this too, at least I would anyway, the more tolerable of the bronies wouldn’t want to touch any of the two buttons, so they don’t offend their clopping brethren, and they don’t want to be accused of clopping themselves. The only people I could see hitting that like button are cloppers and trolls, but mostly cloppers because if the majority were trolls it wouldn’t take over more than half the bar.

The same can be very well said about the karma of the R34 images in the MLP image gallery. Back when I still didn’t have an account I could’ve sworn all the R34 images got buried in tons of thumbs down. Now they get all the thumbs up.

Dude, I never said anything about violence. I’m totally fine with a bit of violence with my ponies, heck, I’m actually excited for fighting is magic. Gore like Cupcakes makes me uneasy, but it’s not something I would get all flustered over. I don’t mind some of the sex and violence mixed in with ponies because some of them are either meant to be funny or not to be taken seriously. It’s when it’s being praised for having sex or violence that rustles my jimmies.

Okay, I may have misjudged cloppers. They are the minority and only a minority of that minority are messed up. I’m just a bit jumpy on them because of how different my perspective of the show is compared to theirs, I guess. Before I finally shut up and put this abhorrent topic to rest though, I’d just like to point out that love and tolerate was never really taught in the show, it’s a good thing to keep in mind, but it wasn’t even mentioned in the show.

@Applejack:

I’m of the opinion that she’s just as deep as any of the other characters. Being a good, deep character doesn’t translate to a radical personality or occasional insanity. Applejack was shown to be stubborn and prideful, something everybody is guilty of now and then. She thought she could stand by herself, but she learned her lesson, and, amazingly, she stuck by the lesson through the rest of the series. She knows to call on her friends and let them call on her. Her pride still lingers in a believable sense, evidenced by the Last Roundup, in which Applejack, arguably the most courageous of the Mane Six, was afraid to face her friends.

Beyond that, she seems to be the lightning rod for all the dysfunctions and crazy that her friends have. She’s the reasonable, ‘normal’ one, and works as a buffer so that nobody else goes crazy. She slips herself sometimes, but not very often, but that doesn’t mean she’s any less interesting.

You can say you dislike Applejack, but do not every say she is poorly written, badly developed, or terrible. Don’t say it about any of the Mane Six, as they are some of the best-written characters I’ve ever seen, by a significant margin.

As for Cadence…

I’m not going to even bother ranting about that.

The repetitive factor still counts.

@Onion Syrup

That vid was obviously made for either trolling or for shits and giggles. Both can, and most likely will, result in upvotes if done well. There were numerous vids created in the style of “Stop fapping to ponies”, but most of those were more of a joke to make fun of the small amount of bronies that does fap to MLP. When I saw your vid, I didn’t think “Ew, porn”, I just though “Lol, funny”.

Cloppers are described amongst the fandom as bronies who literally fap to the characters of the show and the fan art. Hence the title “cloppers”. It’s not an act that will always result in positive reactions of course. But that doesn’t mean they’re a huge group. Subjects like R34 always leave a bigger impact on the mind, and knowing there are people who fap to those type of images will only strengthen that effect.

As for the image gallery. People have become more accepting. In the beginning, every piece of fanart that was even slighty suggestive would receive negative reviews. But most bronies have simply become aware of the fact that these images won’t stop. It’s a part of the fandom, of the internet even. They know that they can’t stop it, so they decided to simply stop bothering. But that doesn’t automatically mean that people who like the images automatically clop to that. They can also just like the art or find the image humerous. There are various possible reasons, and automatically assuming the reason of those images being liked more often is related to bronies becoming cloppers is kinda badly thought out.

For example, one can say that image is suggestive, and it most likely is a bit. But you simply can’t deny it’s of good quality and that it contains humor. Both legit reasons to like an image.

You’re still a bit too inexperienced with the internet Onion Syrup. You jump to conclusions too quickly.

@Onion
You seem to be confusing ‘clop art’ with ‘sexual jokes.’
That comic from the video was pretty clearly meant to play for laughs (It ended on a pun for crying out loud!)
I could see anyone with a liberal enough sense of humor hitting the ‘like’ button there, whether or not they ‘clop.’

If you have a problem with fans of general ‘adult themes,’ then, yes, you will probably find yourself in the minority.
This is an internet-based, largely-male fanbase.
Sex jokes will be there and there is no way to stop that.
Nature of the beast and all that.
Look at it this way: You said that you like some violent content because you find it funny.
Well, some people like the sexual stuff for the same reason.
(I’m not sure what it says about our society when violence is more acceptable than sexual love, but I really don’t want to get into that whole can-’o-worms.)

Outright porn (re: actual R34) really is a very small fraction of the art out there as evidenced by my statistics chart from a couple pages back: ~5%

No shit.

Not everyone is like you. The video is meant as a joke. (Did you even watch to the ending?)
Plenty of people enjoy dirty humor, but aren’t necessarily cloppers.

Furthermore, the ratio of ratings to views is only 0.4%. Most people don’t vote on videos and could be assumed to remain neutral.
The people who would click like are people who enjoyed it. That could be anyone who likes dirty humor but they don’t have to be someone that clops.

I’m just a bit jumpy on them because of how different my perspective of the show is compared to theirs, I guess.

Speaking as a clopper, I really don’t think our views of the show are that different. I don’t clop to the show, and I believe most others don’t as well. There’s just not that much attractive about a cartoon pony. It’s the characterization and situation of whatever’s being clopped to that makes it attractive.
I think you might be incorrectly thinking that anyone who enjoys R34 or perversions of the show are cloppers, they’re not, they just might enjoy dirty humor.

Hmm…still wondering why no date for season 3.

I still haven’t realized how I’d rank the ponies…too confusing, though right now, I’d prolly have Rarity at the bottom.

@ i guess pony rankings

here is my opinion, mine, mio.

I really cant pick a best pony, fluttershy is holding it up as one of my favs, but rainbow dash is rainbow dash… and Pinkie is personality wise the coolest, twilight is obviously the main character so we need to give her that. now i really dont care about rarity or applejack… but seeing that applejack has a hat shes better than rarity, plus rarity is a little bitch.

so i guess

1: fluttershy
2:rainbow dash
3: pinkie
4: twilight
5: applejack
6: rarity

now how i think the rankings are in general

pinkie and rainbow dash usually get the most attention in the fandom so they are fighting for the first position. fluttershy is at the top for who she is, everyone loves fluttershy. twilight idk, i guess shes just twilight. and again no love for rarity or applejack.

so i guess

1: rainbow dash
2: pinkie
3: fluttershy
4: twilight
5: rarity
6: applejack

Now to change the topic, what pony would like to meet for real? lets say if it happend, you found yourself in equestria, which pony would like to befriend first? and why?

Me: pinkie, cmon who wouldnt want to be friends with her? shes only there to make friends and be nice with everyone and have fun. LISTEN TO THE SONG. LISTEN TO IT.
