KnowYourMeme is an inappropriate website?

At school today, they took my laptop away and I’m not allowed to bring it to school for two weeks. At first I thought it was just because I was on my laptop during class (which is not allowed, I’m such a bad ass apparently).

The lady was questioning me and she just said, “Have you been on a website called Knowyourmeme?”
I just said, “yeah, it’s my favorite website.”

She told me that it was inappropriate for school. I guess I can kinda understand that but now she is going to call my mom and tell her that I was looking at inappropriate websites at school.

And now, since my mom never listens to me, she is going to think I was looking at porn or something and this is probably the last thing I will be posting for awhile because she’s most likely going to take my computer away and search every page of my internet history, looking for porn.

Should people be more careful about what they post or should it be the same? Because people post some horrific shit on this website (check least liked images to see what I mean)

What do you think?

I don’t think this site is too inappropriate…. that being said, any person who spies on what you do on the internet isn’t liberal.
I don’t remember what level of school you’re in, but especially in the younger ones there is absolutely no tolerance.

Well, though site is supposed to be family friendly, but sometimes that can be questionable. KnowYourMeme documents all types memes, the internet culture and its phenomena. This means users are ultimately gonna bump into some NSFW material along the way and that might have been what caught your teachers attention in the first
Example: Hentai Quotes..

Though, in a personal opinion, she could just left you off with a warning to not visit the site on school property. Sometimes schools make such a fuzz about things.

KYM does host some NSFW content, but we try to restrict it to NSFW entries, which you can hide if you so choose.

But, when I was in high school, they outright blocked sites such as Facebook and Youtube, because they were “inappropriate for school”. So, I don’t think it has so much to do with the nature of the content as it does the educational value of the content, or lack thereof. Schools do not like students using their internet to browse frivolous (sorry, but let’s face it) websites.

Well, KYM is a social network of some kind. I know my school used to ban everything that had a forum.

Actually, she also asked me if I had been chatting on this site. I guess that also has something to do with it.

Sort of. There are definitely some NSFW things hosted here, but like opspe said, you can block them if you choose to.

KYM is branded as a SFW site though, isn’t it?

You should KNOW that the only correct answer to that is no or only at home.

Although the majority of the site is SFW, there are some NSFW things. Like people have said, there are some NSFW memes that we document, and it would be bad if your mother or a teacher stumbled upon that, especially at your age. Just hope that they recognize the site isn’t all bad, and that it’s hear for a reason. Somehow, I doubt they will.

There should be the option to block NSFW entries and content, but due to a few changes in the profile editing page, I can’t find it.
Just derp around in your settings and profile until you find the right section

Actually, the option to warn you about NSFW entries before visiting them is suddenly gone from the profile options. I notified the staff about it and they’ll see what they can do. Some other stuff that has priority with coding might make it take a while, but just be patient.

As for the reason they think it’s inappropriate can be multiple reasons:

  • You’re 13. Sites related to these corners of the internet aren’t especially well known for their appropriate content for 13-year olds.
  • KnowYourMeme still hosts NSFW content, although we give warnings at the top of entries. But that doesn’t take away that one can still stumble across it in the image stream or on other sections.
  • The high school next to my college has an open network (as has my school). When I was on their network once, I noticed they blocked all websites that were related to gaming. Maybe your school follows a similar policy with websites that host meme-related images like Cheezburger, Reddit, 9gag and KnowYourMeme.

Your last point is likely Random. My high school didn’t let us access KYM, you had to go through x.9gag to get on 9gag (not that I did) and the CSS for Cheez was blocked or something, because they never loaded right.

I’ve heard similar stories on KYM being blocked at schools, so it’s very likely. Perhaps Lea’s school doesn’t have a decent programmer who knows how to decently block a website on the network.

My school (generally; there are sub reasons related to the main ones) bans:

- inappropriate stuff (like porn and the like)

- Social networking

- Proxy anonymisers (websites that can give people this ability)

- Downloads websites (Oh no! one download on this website means we can’t let you use it!)

- Gaming

A few others, but I can’t think of them.

Yeah, well KYM is “inappropriate” if by that you mean it comes under social networking. If one thinks other than that, they probably think you are looking at the more NSFW parts of this site, perhaps.

This is LEA’s mother. I never had a problem with the website that is why I let her have access to it. What I do have a problem with is her blowing off school work; causing her to fail in school, so that she can chat with complete strangers on the internet who tell her that her parents don’t know what they are doing or that she should lie when asked about what she is doing. Incidents like this is why parents HATE these kind of sites. You do not know me or my daughter and you have no right to an opinion about how I parent her.

Excuse me, Mrs….whateveryourlastnameis…..but if we have done anything to offend your parenting style or insult you, allow me to apologize on behalf of our community
I myself am still in school, and its understandable to me why you would want any potential distractions removed
I’m loaded down with physics, chem, Precalculus, and a few other classes that require my focus, so I know why having things such as internet or sites like KYM off-limits during school hours is important
But I’m sure Lea understands the importance of working during school hours by now (hopefully), and maybe a few days or even a week of the computer being taken will be enough punishment.
Once again, sorry if we offended or anything else
InB4 downvotes for being a suck-up.

A few days ago I was doing a powerpoint for school about atomic bombs and wanted to go to tumblr to get this:

Turns out tumblr is blocked. I wondered why for a second,

then I remembered how much porn there is on tumblr.

We are not trying to parent your daughter here Madam, I hope you can understand that. Those that made it seem like they did most likely weren’t serious in it, and therefore shouldn’t be taken serious either.

We were discussing what can make this site inappropriate for schools and the possible reason on why schools want to prevent their students from visiting it.

The thought of your daughter abandoning her schoolwork because of this website wasn’t a reason we thought of, simply because that wasn’t the topic of this discussion. The topic, once again, was looking for a reason what makes this site inappropriate.

If your daughter is indeed abandoning her schoolwork due to us, as a moderator on here you have my sincerest apologies. Fact remains though that teenagers abandoning their schoolwork because of the internet are common. Not only on sites like us (which you described as “complete strangers”, which is true though), but also the popular social networking sites like Facebook. We aren’t the only ones to blame on this problem in general, I hope you can understand that. We are however to blame on your daughter’s problem, and you once again have my apologies for this. I also apologize for the behavior of the users here and will look into it that they don’t do it again, they didn’t have the right to judge you or your daughter.

I have given her great liberties as to internet access and she is not currently in a place where she can handle all her responsibilities with distractions such as this. Hopefully she will learn her lesson and prioritize her time better.

I trust your decision and can only hope such a situation doesn’t occur again in the future.

Have a nice day.

I just looked all through the thread again. No one even mentioned a thing about your parenting. Where’d that bit come from? We were all complaining about the school’s strictness. Not a thing was said about you.

Given the time between this and the last post made by the mother, I’m assuming they logged off. So I’m sorry Jack, but she most likely won’t answer your question.

Therefore I’m going to lock this thread now, it served its purpose.
