Hullo. I’ll be writing my college application essay soon, and I want it to be as kickass as possible. So post anything inspirational you can find, be it pictures of nature or poetry. I’d like the thread to be srs bsns within reason, but I won’t crack down on anybody for posting a joke. Just don’t let it get out of hand. Thanks. :)

I’m looking for things like this:

A kramas for support.

Off of the top of my head, something that I think all people pursuing academia should keep in mind:

“When I was young, I admired clever people. Now that I am old, I admire kind people.”
-Abraham J. Heschel

I don’t mean that to say you shouldn’t worry about doing well in getting into school. But it’s important to know that when you have the full perspective of life behind you, you might find that pursuits of knowledge and truth won’t be the thing you find to be the most important attribute about yourself.

Having internalized that (and reminding myself of that sitting here in my school’s computer lab,) it takes some pressure off of me doing well…so that I can do well.

I hope to find something visual for you as well later. Good luck to you.

Maybe le Reddit has the inspirational images you need. Especially the SFWPornNetwork.

Start at this collection of natural images and then go to the others like /r/quotesporn.

A list of the others should be in the header of each of the subreddits.

I would tell you to go watch Meet the Robinsons, and watch the credits to see an amazing quote, but I have no way of knowing if you have ever seen the movie, so here, the best inspiration quote I’ve ever read from a damn good movie.

But, if you’re “above” taking inspiration from a “kids movie” then watch this video.

What I get out of watching that video, and hearing that Walt Disney quote is that humans are the best fucking things ever. No matter good or bad, when a human thinks and then does, something will happen.

I always check out this this page for inspiration. Not sure if it fits your criteria but hopefully you’ll find some neat stuff in there.

Thanks. I’d hand you all kramas, but I want to keep my “karma given” at 666 for the month of Halloween. :S Keep it coming!

Oh, and @Beat: I’m definitely not above taking inspiration from a kids’ movie. The ending of the “I’ll Make a Man Out of You” scene from Mulan still gets me misty-eyed. :p

Good, then go and watch every Disney movies ever, you’ll think of something.

And might get sued for plagiarism.

“Sometimes the things that may or may not be true are the things a man needs to believe in the most. That people are basically good; that honor, courage, and virtue mean everything; that power and money, money and power mean nothing; that good always triumphs over evil; and I want you to remember this, that love… true love never dies. You remember that, boy. You remember that. Doesn’t matter if it’s true or not. You see, a man should believe in those things, because those are the things worth believing in.”

Be a simple, kind of man.
Oh be something, you love and understand.
Baby be a simple, kind of man.
Oh, won’t you do this for me son,
If you can?
- Simple Man, Lynard Skynard

Seriously, I always draw my inspiration from this song. I would suggest youtubing it right now and listening to it for 10 hours straight.

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too:
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or, being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
Or being hated don’t give way to hating,
And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise;

If you can dream---and not make dreams your master;
If you can think---and not make thoughts your aim,
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same:.
If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build’em up with worn-out tools;

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings,
And never breathe a word about your loss:
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: “Hold on!”

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings---nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much:
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,
And---which is more---you’ll be a Man, my son!

Awesome poem.

Oh, and @Random don’t worry, I hate those sepia-drowned hipster pictures as much as you. They hold zero relevance as far as I’m concerned.

Thanks for all your responses, really. I finally figured out what my topic was going to be, in a sudden revelation as I was reading a page about college essays. You can continue posting if you want, as if this was an ‘inspiration general’ thread, but my needs are filled. :3

I guess I could make my own contribution now:

Ha, college apps. I remember those. Rejected from all the Ivies and Hopkins I’M NOT WORTHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY

The inevitable question here is where are you applying to?

I always find a little music to to be quite relaxing. Have a listen.

You should write about a time where you exhibited leadership. That’s what colleges are looking for: leaders.

Basically never. I’d rather be honest, anyway.

Pretty nice song. I’m writing to get into USC, but I’m also applying to UC Irvine, Chapman and a few others. USC’s just the goal (however unlikely) that I’m shooting for.

Nice USC is a better school but UC Irvine is in a better neighborhood. Although me personally I would enjoy living downtown near USC they are cleaning it up down there and lots of new buildings, restaurants, etc. I hope it all goes well for you.

Hmm. If they don’t require an extra essay then of course I’ll apply to UCLA. I’m just really burned out from college apps at the moment, and now I’ve been told that the lovely essay I wrote needs to have 75% of it rewritten. No me gusta.
