Just put 20, if that is the age you’re turning this year.

So um… Not sure why I’m posting the colored versions of an update that happened a week ago… But whatever, more Sburb Ponies.

… Wow… I haven’t posted about that in like a month.

I’ve only got one sketch done for the next update… but its one where the exact specifics of the hoof gesturing of one character is kind of… Well, not impossible, but it looks slightly awkward…

But I suppose for any pony using a floating touch scree it would either look awkward to be in the position or be drawn awkward. Especially at that angle of touch screen, where I couldn’t wind any reffferences for ponies with the bottom of their hooves at that angle.

…Also I have no idea how to make a pony look tired properly and still make them look concerned.

Tell me what you think.

Now excuse me while I return to the cave of “every moment I live is agony.” Aka; bed rest for the sick.

Right, looked at the survey, seems it addresses episodes I have yet to watch, so I’ll come back to it maybe.

(Quotes from Page 190)

Stunt Said:

I’m sure this is a topic we must have covered before, but here’s my take on it… ponies don’t really come under any races like white or black. Sort of a pathetic answer, but they already have Earth ponies, Unicorns and Pegasusususes, plus all the other sentient hooved creatures, so trying to add another “race” has always felt redundant to me. The only in-universe purpose it would show is an episode on racism, but Zecora has got that front covered. So I suppose it makes sense in that logic that zebras would be the black people of Equestria, but if I really had to make the distinction, I would just say that the characters are just whatever their voice actor is.

I understand what you’re getting at but Earth/Pegasus/Unicorn doesn’t map well to real-life race very well because of their different capabilities while Pony/Zebra does, since they’re just color and maybe shape differences like white versus black people IRL (also why I need horned/winged Zebras), plus as you mentioned the one Zebra we’ve actually seen would fit this pretty well. Of course this is a moot point except for dealing with humanizations and ponifications (And for the former, you could just go anthro instead and dodge all this race stuff).

TSG Said:

What was he expecting? Twilight to be trapped screaming silently for help for the rest of the series?

Actually I watched the review again and it turns out I was remembering wrong or misunderstood because he was actually speaking about how most fiction makes getting petrified A Pretty Damn Big Deal and they just kinda throw it out here, comparing it to Twi being temporarily killed. Not totally sure I agree but I can kinda see the issue, basically feeds into my main issue with Stare Master: They just didn’t seem to be willing to go into or explain anything that episode.
Embed if you want to check for yourself:

You would be correct that that’s where the “Scootachicken” joke originated from.

Ah, thanks. Yeah, this was another “origin identity crisis”, I thought it came later from something Diamond Tiara said to her or something like that. You know, I find it kinda shocking how often this is happening to me…

When the 1000+ year old alicorn who’s seen Star Swirl, Sombra, and countless others says she’s never seen someone with Twilight’s raw abilities before, she means it.

I can believe it…

1) That was Faust’s attempt to subvert Hasbro (Friendship Express Train Playset!). It didn’t make any sense whatsoever and was probably one of her weaker moments. “Let’s build an incredibly heavy train and then pull it manually.” Fanon dictates that the train was broke and a “manual backup” is employed by the railroad in case the steam engine malfunctions. Later uses of the train drop the stallions, which helps to reinforce this fanon.
2) And /mlp/ says Pinkie only got ruined in S3. The nostalgia glasses are strong there.
3) Can’t have it too realistic. It’s a shame “pony expansion causes severe friction/Andrew Jackson shit” isn’t addressed more often in fanfics, since the show’s hamstring by its target audience.

1) I see, that makes sense, thank you for letting me know about that. I gotta be honest, I don’t put as much emphasis on Faust as many fans though, she’s certainly talented and was important to the core concept of FiM but she had a lot of screwy ideas too and certainly doesn’t seem fit for the worship and unconditional “Word Of Faust” adherence from the pedestal many fans put her on (I’d actually compare her to Gene Roddenberry, though I’ll also give Lauren credit that at least she didn’t have any fucked-up prejudicial and agenda-pushing stuff like him, it would seem). It’s one thing to admire her, but treating her as if she can do no wrong doesn’t seem quite right.
2) Yeah, honestly, I find that hard to believe too. Can’t make any judgments until I see Season 3 but unless she drops like a rock I don’t expect I’ll buy it. Then again, maybe it’s different if you actually began the show liking her? Perhaps one of our resident Pinkie fans can offer some perspective on that?
3) Actually, that’s really not what I wanted at all. I’m glad you brought it up too because I saw a complaint on TV Tropes about this episode having “Politically Correct History” and honestly I don’t have a problem with it, they clearly only picked it to have a fun western theme, not to say anything about real-life settlers and Native Americans. What that problem really was for me was the way they portrayed the not listening part, the ridiculous awkwardness of the way the “Mane 6” would come in to warn people who’d keep doing what they’re doing and the “Mane 6” take it as a cue to stop mid-sentence. It’d work a lot better if they were brushing it off with stuff like “We don’t have time for this!”, “They won’t listen…” and so on, it’d be a lot more fitting and believable. And maybe not having the leader Buffalo decide to stop just so Pinkie can set him off again…

Why do you think this episode was the trigger for Trollestia? Coincidentally, it also bolstered Tyrantlestia. After all, why would everyone--including her personal student--be so scared about banishment/imprisonment if there wasn’t some semblance of credibility to their claims? That’s the logic, anyway.

I can totally see that, but to be fair, this is why I personally think they thought that:
1) Nightmare Moon
2) Twilight and Flutters both being out of their gourd with fear spawned by the circumstances that they don’t really process that Number 1 won’t happen to them. I mean, it certainly fits their behavior right then, and I can understand it.

XTR Said:

Deal with it. No one’s soulless enough to draw Echo being raped, mangled or chopped into pieces and used for lawn mulch.
Not even 4chan.

Which makes me ask, why? I realize most people like them, but why are they such amazingly awesome sacred cows to the point that not even 4chan will touch them, when apparently the same can’t be said of Fluttershy , Derpy Hooves and Princess Luna ? Hell, it even seems to extend past “no heartless abuse” to “no heartfelt ‘grimdark’ stuff, no slapstick, no dark comedy and no negative stuff for these characters at all because they’re so flipping sacred!”… Though typing all this makes me wonder if I’m in the wrong neighborhood…

But again, even if you like them, why are they so awesome as to not have negative material at all?

(Continued, finally “filled in the gaps” and got another new episode watched)

First off, just wanna say that this was a while ago and I’m going off memory, so I might be forgetting something.
One thing I noticed early on was that the dialogue seemed kinda awkward and stilted for some reason, more than just “The CMC’s voice actresses are child actors” because this isn’t usually a problem. Also, I know Apple Bloom’s voice actress is the one that does Sweetie Belle’s singing but it seemed extra conspicuous here, since Sweetie seemed to have an inexplicable Southern twang when singing…
Now, the most important/infamous part of the episode, revealing their talents: This seems like a bad move, since it basically undercuts their whole character conflict, this could’ve been cool in a much later episode but as it is it basically kills the meaning of their “crusading”, as they REALLY SHOULD KNOW WHAT TO LOOK FOR! Also, I still have the same problem with them not at least trying each thing until they get it right, plus some of they things they try make me question why you’d want that as your talent and destiny, like clearing out that pigsty, what little kid would want such a tedious and unpleasant chore to be what they do forever?
Now, if you’ll excuse me I’ll fast-forward to the talent show as I have another grievance with it: Snips and Snails’ magic show! I stood up for Trixie’s a while back as I felt it was showing off the extent of her abilities that was the show, much like the Wonderbolts but with magic. But Snips and Snails were crap by HUMAN standards, to continue that analogy if Trixie’s show was like a Wonderbolts performance then this is like Scootaloo putting on a flight show using frickin’ wire-work… And they won “best magic show”? Really? Nobody could outdo this twits in this strangely specific category?
As for the OTHER most infamous part, I didn’t really have too much of a problem with the CMC song, honestly. Some awkward stuff but not really horrible the way some see it. I heard suggestions that it should’ve actually been good and they just pretend it’s bad in-universe but that would be seriously immersion-breaking, if this was a problem I’d suggest either having it really suck but get cut off or otherwise left short (to get the point across while minimizing irritation to the audience) or making it hilariously bad (to get the point across while entertaining the audience).
Finally, heard some complaints that this has a moral of “Do what you’re good at, even if you don’t like it”. Actually, I agree with that 100%. I’m going to go into my personal life to explain why:
I essentially have two talents that could lead to careers for me: Mathematics or storywriting (possibly also video game designing, can throw that into the latter for the purposes of this monologue). The former is something I’m apparently quite skilled and I have a pretty big interest in the latter. The former and its former education has always made me miserable while I really enjoy the latter. What am I studying at University and looking for a career in? Math. Why? Because it’ll lead to a much steadier career, my writing is nowhere near good enough for a career at this point (and I can’t even design my game ideas nearly properly enough to consider THAT). I do it because I have to, not because I really want to, and quite frankly whenever someone gives me that “You have a CHOICE!!!11oneone” bullcrap it makes me want to throttle them! No, I do NOT have a choice, this is what I must do in order to get a steady career and not die in poverty so please don’t put the blame on me for not enjoying this torture, that doesn’t help at all.
So yeah, it’s a hard lesson but one I totally agree with, and something that the CMC would really need to learn.
In conclusion, not horrible but kind of a pretty weak episode and I can see why TSG initially suggested skipping the CMC episodes.

Okay, with that out of the way, I found this one kinda tough to watch honestly.
Early on, I found a lot of the spa stuff kinda painfully girly again, though this is at least a minor point. Next I found a lot of rather corny stuff after that, though that at least died down mostly.
It was actually not horrible for a while, but still kinda hard to watch nonetheless, I was feeling sorry both Rarity and Fluttershy, though that’s definitely intended.
No, where it really went downhill was when Pinkie got really involved in the plot and she was forcing Twilight to keep those secrets against all logic, reason, compassion and morality. Yes, of COURSE it’s more important to keep a promise than breaking it for the mutual benefit of everyone involved! Yeah, yet another episode making me hate Pinkie, honestly I really expected that.
In conclusion, didn’t really like this one, some solid enough parts but the unpleasant stuff made it hard to watch.
On a sidenote, Spike has a crush on Rarity!

(click for full size)

This one’s actually quite interesting, a very good and almost “epic” feeling episode overall, don’t have too much to say but I’ve got some stuff.
First off, actually I wasn’t too interested in the CMC here at all, more tired crusading shtick, once again giving up immediately after failure as if failing at something would reveal their talent, and some of their dialogue sounded rather forced and kinda painful to listen to.
But they were only really here as a framing device, and all these stories were pretty good overall. Good stories, not really too much to complain about at all, only got a couple remarks about this.
For one, Season 4 kinda colors Pinkie’s story: Where the hell was Maud when all of this was happening? I guess it could be explained away that she was away for a holiday or exploring or finding rocks elsewhere or something, and of course I can’t expect her vector to travel back in time into this episode or anything. Also, I thought it was “Party Of One” which started the Pinkamena thing, another surprising origin for me.
Also, Rainbow inspiring everyone seemed kinda odd to me, but that really was the point so I can’t complain about it. It also had quite the effect on this little thingy:

(Yeah, I spotted her! :P)

I can imagine a half dozen reasons why. But it boils down to a three way intersection between being obscure, being popular, and being appealing to certain people.

In other words… Bat Ponies are extremely popular among certain people, and those certain people generally wouldn’t conceive of having something so near and dear to them be hurt without a good reason. And everyone else just considers them beneath notice.

If you want to know why people that like them wouldn’t conceive of hurting them… Its probably because their status as the unusual social outliers makes them popular with people who consider themselves somehow different to most others, either socially or in some other sense.

… In other words… The kind of people who are likely touchy about the idea that people are bullied for being different. Probably because they themselves were bullied.

This means that the idea of someone hurting a bat pony is the sort of thing that will generate an entire herd of people so utterly infuriated and filled with martial zeal for righteous justice that whoever suggested hurting them will likely be put off by all the death threats against them.

…And I mean that, it would get to the point that even a troll would begin to fear for their lives.

I understand what you’re getting at but Earth/Pegasus/Unicorn doesn’t map well to real-life race very well

My counter arguement is shove your headcanon up that it doesn’t have to. It’s a magical universe, so there’s nothing to stop different races coming with different abilities. In addition, this way not all ponified black people have to be zebras.

@CMC song
I still like that song for the Cutealoo. Seriously, listen to this acapella version…

Dat way she pronounces “Figure.”
Dat laughter at 1:53
The true cutest CMC. I don’t care how many squeaky belles you throw at me.

@Batponybuse
Eh. Probably no real reason there’s so little of it. I imagine it’s just because most people who would draw stuff like that would stick to drawing the less obscure characters getting maimed. I mean. why draw a bat pony getting hurt when you can draw Fluttershy or Derpy getting hurt instead?

@Magic show
I like to think Snips and Snails were the only ones who entered. I mean, if the- HOLD UP A SECOND!

Speaking of people that I love, I believe it is my turn to suck DeadParrot’s Big Long Hard Cock.
Better get to work, buddy!

…So you’re telling me it was that easy this whole time?

Oh, one final thing. I went to Nerdfest New Zealand not too long ago (no, that’s not really the name) and I picked up a this thing.

The one that I have is a little stained on one side, but the derp is there, and that’s all that matters to me. I display it proudly on the highest shelf, and by the highest shelf I mean the second shelf. In my closet. @Pony Racism

But really, like Stunt said, why is it really needed?
Teaching kids about prejudice doesn’t need to be so literal as Zecora’s introductory episode showed so why bother defining which ponies = which human races?

By the way, since when has differing abilities (or at least the perception of such) been something that reduces or somehow nullifies racism?
Quite the opposite, that seems to be what a lot of racism is centered around, even in the pony-verse:

So while you can’t make direct connections between specific pony races and specific human races, the same issues can be brought up and seen without that.

@Over A Barrel train
I meant to speak up on this when it first came up, but I forgot.
As I recall, that weirdness was not actually Hasbro attempting to meddle, but a classic cartoon conundrum of ‘readability.’
(Hasbro did step in with the whole ‘Friendship Express’ thing, but that wasn’t until season two and that train has a very distinct look to it that is nothing like that first one.)
‘Readability’ in the way it is used here refers to how easily and quickly identifiable an object is when it comes on screen.
Lauren originally wanted to just have the ponies pulling the train cars as she imagined their society as basically pre-industrial (in most ways) and she thought it would be a fun and unique way of getting around.
The animators, however, thought that simply having the ponies pulling big cars wouldn’t ‘read’ enough like a train so a compromise was reached that that giant useless engine car would be included so that anyone looking at it would immediate get that this thing is a train.
No, it doesn’t make much logical sense, but these kinds of things happen surprisingly often, especially in cartoons.

For example, ‘readability’ is the primary reason that The Simpsons had an antenna on their TV for 20-something years despite the fact that they had pretty much gone out of significant use years before.
The antennas immediately define it as a TV rather than, say, a microwave which would actually look pretty similar in the simplified drawing style of the show.
It’s the same reason why most cartoons still use older-style phones with wired receivers.
They may not make much practical sense, but they have highly recognizable shapes and that reduces any possible confusion that an audience may have in identifying an object.
In theory, this should allow the story to take precedence over people doing double-takes at ambiguous items.

@Twi and Flut’s banishment paranoia
Yes, wherever would they have gotten the idea that Celestia could do such a thing…

But really, Twilight is frequently shown to massively over-worry about everything and assume that consequences for failure will be much more severe than they ever would be.
… and Fluttershy is a pushover who immediately took Twilight’s concerns and made them her own fears.
Then they just fed into each other’s baseless fear until they forgot that they had essentially made it all up themselves.

@Bat abuse
To expand on Stunt’s, the intent behind violent imagery and ‘abuse art’ is typically to get a rise out of the viewer and this is most effectively accomplished by making the victim someone that the viewer is meant to care about.
Bat ponies are relatively generic and most people have little emotional investment in them, but canon characters have established personalities and lots of fans.
A picture of an injured Fluttershy will get a lot more attention than one of an injured OC so Fluttershy will naturally get more abuse.
(To be clear, these kinds of things are not always done with malicious intent toward the character. An artist can, and often will, injure a character that they like as a method of eliciting an emotional response from the viewer. It’s a pretty common trope so it can’t be assumed that these ‘abuse’ pictures are all just trolling directed at their fans.)

@Stunt

All you had to do was ask!

Have to agree here. There is virtually no art that abuses bat ponies for the same reason there is virtually no art abusing fruit bats. If you are gonna do abuse images, may as well go for the high profile targets. But Bat ponies were very obscurely portrayed in the fandom and haven’t ranked nearly as much buzz

Quick, whats the main reason for drawing abuse images? I betcha only a tiny part of it has anything to do with actually hating the characters. It’s mainly about being noticed! For maximum effect, do it to something lots of people will notice.

besides, bat ponies are so cute! Who can hurt this thing

Two critiques:
1) Shouldn’t the wings be higher up on the body near the ribcage? It looks like her wings have sprouted from her belly where there isn’t any bone support.
2) For someone who’s about to be eaten, she doesn’t look all that perturbed about it.

Of course, I’m probably missing some context.

Enjoy the next three seasons of them fumbling around awkwardly. It kind of makes me think they intended to wrap up the crusaders’ arc pretty quickly--especially with their VAs being actual kids--but then decided to pull a Pokemon and drag it on endlessly with them never learning and never really growing.

And they won “best magic show”? Really? Nobody could outdo this twits in this strangely specific category?

If I was pulling explanations out of my ass, I’d say it’s a kids competition: everyone’s gonna win something as there can be no “losers.” They probably had the only “magic show” and so won “best magic show.”

If you really want something about batponies getting fucked up, you can read Conviction which features batponies getting diced, having sex with NMM, and generally getting fucked up by the Royal Guard I would have said that, if the author hadn’t decided to destroy the story so he can turn it into a novel.

The irony being that this is the first time I actually drew the connecting point for the wings being anywhere near the ribcage… And nobody ever said anything before… I’ll have to try that again.

Probably a bit easier than a complete body restructure anyways.

2) For someone who’s about to be eaten, she doesn’t look all that perturbed about it.

I’d say the “about to be eaten” part comes like… several panels later… After a bit of hiding… But I guess I just aren’t very good at making those groomed for years to become “natural fighters” reach a state of noticeable fear or panic in any “realistic sense” unless its some kind of phobia.

Why is it that I always have so much to say about the things CrashGordan posts?

I guess it’s because these posts of mine tend to be really big and it’s the law of averages with the number of potential conversation starters.

@Pony Race: I’m not gonna bother trying to justify my headcanon right now (if you guys really desperately want me to then I suppose I can if you ask), I will mention that if this particular headcanon really seriously bothers you, then you might need to make a more widespread mention of this since it’s a pretty common one, if the number of comments I’ve seen on pictures of ponified black people saying “should be a zebra” are anything to go by.
I’ll stick to the idea of using the standard Pony races for this analogy. I basically have two things to comment on.
First, is directly mapping the Pony races to humans, something like “White people are Unicorns, Asian people are Pegasi, Black people are Earth Ponies” (just a random example, shuffle it around or substitute different human races if you need to, the points the exact same no matter what way around you have it). I am very much NOT okay with this in the slightest for about 3 reasons:
1) As mentioned, they have different physical capabilities. Besides being obviously factually wrong, I also find it offensive already just for saying human races have different capabilities. On a side note, this is also why I require Zebras to have the same 3/4-way racial split as Ponies as a prerequisite for the “Black people = Zebras” thing, and why I don’t accept “Native Americans = Buffalo” at all.
2) Even if you don’t find that already offensive, there’s how the Pony races are known to be unbalanced, most fans agree that essentially Unicorns>Pegasi>Earth Ponies in terms of “power”, sometimes to quite a large extent. So this would basically imply racial superiority, and I don’t have to explain why that’s Very Wrong Indeed TM .
3) Alicorns. They are a literal master race, so if you mapped a human race to them you’d be implying the same thing about them… Also self-explanatory, though also the weakest point since there are a few ways to get around it.
Second would be using them as a metaphor, like DeadParrot mentioned. I’m actually not against that, just as long as it still applies to humans. For an example, Trenderhoof’s Earth Pony fetish is fine for this as it basically functions like real-life human racial fetishes, despite the differences in how the two race systems work. On the other hand if you were to do an analogy for real-life institutions putting restrictions on which races can join (i.e. The Freemason Blue Lodge in the US who only allow Whites) by doing an issue episode with the Wonderbolts denying entry to Unicorns/Earth Ponies that would NOT work because in this case they have a 100% logical reason to do it which is inapplicable to real life, you would either have the real-life solution replicated and it would be ridiculous in the in-universe context (They let in wingless ponies… Who can’t fly and are therefore basically useless or end up needing to segregated or given special equipment or something anyway just to do it) or unfitting to real life/holds unfortunate implications IRL (If they were shown to be right to deny entry to wingless ponies). Basically it boils down to “if you use a fantastic analogy then make sure the analogy works”, it’s an obvious point but it’s one that I thought might need to be stated anyway as a lot of fantasy analogies miss this mark (I actually have this problem with “Scootacripple”, I can say why if desired because it’s actually very simple).
I’m actually kinda surprised this has sparked so much discussion, it was mostly just a small aside to say that I wasn’t really all that pissy about something that didn’t fit my “headcanon”, because I know there are a lot of people in this fandom who get ridiculously pissed off about stuff like that.

@CMC song: I’m a bit iffy on checking out this one but I might, will post my response if I do.

TSG Said:

Enjoy the next three seasons of them fumbling around awkwardly. It kind of makes me think they intended to wrap up the crusaders’ arc pretty quickly--especially with their VAs being actual kids--but then decided to pull a Pokemon and drag it on endlessly with them never learning and never really growing.

Yeah, though at least it sounds like they push it a little less later on with some of the more recent CMC episodes having a focus beyond the “crusading”, I gotta say from what I saw with The Cutie Mark Chronicles the “crusading” conflict might be in arc-stall but the CMC themselves can be used as the catalyst for solid stories on other concepts.

If I was pulling explanations out of my ass, I’d say it’s a kids competition: everyone’s gonna win something as there can be no “losers.” They probably had the only “magic show” and so won “best magic show.”

Actually, that makes sense. Would also explain the overly-specific other medals too. I guess the only issue is the stupidity of those two themselves for actually trying it like that, and that’s in-character for it so I won’t complain.

And we’re actually posting Bat Ponies now? Okay!

And did you hear? They like trains!

The original is called “Doing Hurtful Things to Your Waifu.”

The spinoffs are called “Not Doing Hurtful Things to Your Waifu.”

The next step was obvious.

This is also the cutest thing I’ve seen all day.

This post just made me very happy for the fact that the word “horsebando” now exists.

These (the positive ones) are adorable.

@The Vinyl Scratch one:
Is it good or bad that they avoided the obvious pun?

Also worth mentioning they also parodied the original negative version:

No, this is the first time they enforced the ban.

I thought those were banned along with the Milky and porn threads back when the Scruffening happened last year? They did just ban the ya es hora Spanish threads because evidently they were violating global rules by posting cp after the threads hit the bump limit and the mods/janitors didn’t enforce the rules because they don’t speak Spanish and didn’t know that that kind of shit was going on.

Speaking of, remember when Disturbed x joined that brony dating site so he could get murdered and appear on Dateline? Well it appears some anon on /mlp/ bit the bullet and actually broke down the pay wall to see what those emails said.

All indications are the site’s just a scam and those “messages” are from bots in an attempt to get you to fork over the dough. Given the generic nature of the messages, it appears /mlp/ is correct in assuming it’s a scam. Good thing Disturbed didn’t pay to play…

…unless he was the anon.

Yeah there is a new janitor who bans anything he doesn’t like. Ponies aren’t the only target.

“I’m so excited there is a place I can meet some bronies, their not so easy to find as you might think!” ಠ_ಠ Are they even trying with these posts? Do you know how to get Bronies to come out of the woodwork? Go on some website and post “Hoofbump!” and boom, instant bronies.

@Fifths

That will be interesting. It was her legacy that drew in so much love for MLP in the beginning. I wonder if she can pull the same fanfare with her own film?
