Well, this thread advanced a lot for the 10 days I was left without internet connection. So, what did I miss?

“Ace: chuckles You missed the entire movie.”

EDIT: Seeing as we have a page get, does anybody have suggestions for Pony Attax cards? The Mane Six, Celestia, and Luna are already done. Anyone else you want to see?

Oh, dear, it seems you’ve activated my… wait for it…

ALU-CARD!!!

But seriously, you need some Lyra cards, dealing with magic hand abilities.

Do it…

Have fun!

Edit:
Try turning up your speakers, guys.
I just watched through the whole thing and it sounded fine on my end, if only a little quieter than I might have expected.
Overall quality is far better than I expected to see before an actual DVD rip.
Give it a try if you don’t feel like waiting.

Thanks, but I don’t feel like watching a shaky recording from a cell phone that I can barely hear.
The search continues

EDIT:
Seriously, thanks for posting the movie. But I’d rather wait for better quality.

It started out pretty well and was entertaining for most of the middle, ridiculous plot and rushed beginning aside, but it kinda fell apart at the ending there.

*All but the last ten minutes with DeadParrot

The ending did feel rush – that’s why I gave it an A-. Like Vinyl commented on in that reaction script back there, time wasn’t a big factor – it’s a feature film. Maybe it was for the TV airing? Who knows?

Pressed the HD button, raised my speakers (Did this without reading your comment considering my new computer has beats audio and it’s incredibly quiet from 1-20 but once you get to 21+ it turns into a fucking movie theater!) and now all I can say is….

Let us see if it remains ready during this movie or if my jimmies get a rustlin’ (Man am I glad my power finally came back on, if I had to wait till Thursday like ComEd said I’d have to wait I don’t think this thing would still be here.)

EDIT: There’s some fucking neckbeard douchebag (I’m going to assume he’s a neckbeard because he’s pissing me off 47 seconds in!) talking in the background. He better shut the fuck up now because I’m trying to enjoy my first new pony in 4 months _AND I TAKE MY PONI BERRY SERIOUSLY! titty sprinkles _

I like how after much anxiety and worry, we’re all finally getting to see what we’ve longed for. It feels like a movie’s climax, it really does. (No, I’m not spoiling anything. That’s crazy.)

@ Deadparrot’s video that’s actually pretty steady and you can hear it if you crank your sound up all the way

I’ll give it a B+. It’s alright – about as good as one of the middling episodes, but (like most of the “big” things that happen in the show) it seems a bit rushed. Totally not worth the pre-release shitstorm.

Okay after sitting through that entire movie all I can say is……..Bronies honestly need to stop thinking every little thing is going to bring an end to MLP. That movie was actually…..good and when I mean good I don’t mean needs to be in the IMDb top 250 or something, just good as in I’d be pretty embarrassed if I were one of those guys screaming up and down saying Equestria Girls was going to be shit because they made the Ponies into humans. Now THAT was going into it with some pretty average expectations and it still exceeded those and I feel good for watching it titty sprinkles.

That’s all I can really say about it. It got pretty weird in the end, but I was ok with it. There were some pretty good moments in there. Spike was hilarious in this.

I honestly feel embarrassed for the people making a big deal about it. I bet a lot of people are still swearing up and down that the movie is bad just so they don’t have to admit that they were freaking out over nothing.

I thought I wouldn’t be able to like EQG much because of the setting, but I think it was pretty neat. I really enjoyed Twilight’s derp moments (that images of in the gallery got me interested in watching it after all), that song 43 minutes in and a number of other things here and there. Mostly it was just nice to see over an hour of new pony content. 7/10 might watch agian, thanks for posting it deadparrot.

Since i didn’t actually say anything before, my experience mirrors what I’ve been seeing from most people, here and elsewhere.
Overall, pretty alright.
Plot was a little weak/rushed/odd in some places, but the humor and characterizations seemed strong as ever and those are the primary reasons that I enjoy the show.
So I count that as a win.

In the end, I found that I was wishing for more time to explore the new world, its inhabitants, and its functions.
Considering that most people, myself included, had been originally turned off by the very concept of human-pony world, the fact that it got me even that interested says something.
So yeah, nothing wildly amazing, but enjoyable in total.

I will say that I probably liked the beginning parts more than anything.
Newly winged Twilight struggling to get her appendages to cooperate was awesome and exactly what I had hoped to see after her alicornication.
The little moments of anxiety and self-doubt were also perfectly in-character for her and make me eager to see how Season 4 will explore her new role.
I know that I’ve seen a Conspiracy Keanu implying that Hasbro used this movie to sneakily get us to accept Twilight having wings, and I have to say, it actually kind of worked!
(Obviously, it could have been handled without the human stuff, but it was done well. No complaints on that front.)

Also, I think I spent as much time paying attention to the relevant story points as I did to all the background stuff.
DHX has a habit of playing around and this movie was no different.

I distinctly remember seeing Trixie in that shot (because I noticed her hat and cape), but Gangnam guy?
Did not see that coming!
Nice touch, guys.

Speaking of writing, Egophiliac should be an official writer for the show!
She has such excellent characterization and personality injected into every one of these comics.
Having Pinkie’s one stipulation involve living in a cupcake could not be more perfect!

So. I went ahead and watched the movie via the link that was so graciously provided.

My thoughts?

I loved it.

I thought I was going to hate it, because I fucking hate high school movies and everything they stand for.

But against all odds, I loved it. It was much better than I was expecting.

As for the series, I’m actually looking forward to it now. In all honesty, it’ll be just like watching ponies like I normally do, except with less pony and more annoying-ass teenagers discovering the magic of friendship all over again.

God I hate teenagers. Always hitting my mailbox with baseball bats and egging my house, trampling my lawn… mutter mutter…

Also, human Twilight Sparkle…

26/10 would befriend/use improper fractions to express my fondness for

1) Could you please state what trademarks are for, who are they meant to protect and how character names protect them?
2) You mean, it had much larger publicity than any of the fanfics, image boards or sites?
3) Such risks are very small. I have yet to see a fangame tarnish any brand values.
4) A few weeks wasn’t prompt.

Maybe we should try to look this a different angles, what would have happened if that fighting game was indeed released.

Be it was it may, before we should make any conclusions, someone should find out who in Hasbro’s office makes these decisions, when these decisions are made and how they make these decisions. If there’s something important we don’t know, maybe Hasbro is hiding something for a reason.

By the way, would you defend Hasbro even if they start shutting down as many pieces of fan work creators, image boards and other infringing websites as possible?

1) Trademarks are “a recognizable sign, design or expression which identifies products or services of a particular source from those of others.” They are used to help consumers identify different products. For instance, thanks to trademarks, you know that if you see the “My Little Pony” logo or name “Twilight Sparkle” on a piece of packaging, that product is made by Hasbro or a licensee of Hasbro*. This aids consumers in not only supporting companies that they like by showing them those companies products, but helps to reduce “knock offs” that are of inferior quality or dangerous (lead paint, not following recall rules, etc.).

*Of course, someone may commit trademark infringement and use the logo or name without permission. This is why it’s so important that companies have such strict policies with trademarks. If they didn’t enforce them, the marks would lose their entire purpose as knock offs would be indistinguishable from the genuine product, hence why those who don’t go after “rouge third parties” get their marks revoked, because they’re already worthless.

2) Fallout: Equestria is the only other fan work I can think of that has anywhere near the publicity that Fighting is Magic had, and it’s still significantly less. Fighting was featured as a top story on Gamestop and had countless smaller articles on other sites (Polygon, Kotaku, etc). It was a contender to be featured at EVO, the world’s largest fighting game tournament, and would still receive a large spot on the indie section. That’s just the non-brony media. That attention is what most likely prompted the lawyers.

3) But they’re still risks. Corporations are all about determining risks. When assessing things, look at the money. Which group affects Hasbro more: the soccer/Tumblr social justice blogger moms who get their jimmies rustled by the slightest wind who buy toys for their girls, or a few internet folks who’ll get upset about Fair Use infringements? Even if the risk is small, Hasbro’s not going to take it. Especially with the way the toy industry is going. Tablets, computers, and smart phones are putting a tremendous squeeze on Hasbro’s profits and they don’t want anything to happen that could risk those already fragile profits.

4) For a multinational corporation that has 5,800 employees, several layers of management that all need to stamp off on it, and lawyers who need to review the laws, trademarks, and copyrights, and is only open 5 days a week? It’s blazing fast. How long does it take the DMV/Secretary of State to send you documents? Government and corporate bureaucracy work at the same speed.

From the rumors that I’ve heard, the Legal Department and Marketing Department are in a constant war over how to handle the Bronies. Legal wants to go all Viacom on us, while Marketing wants our money and publicity. More than likely, the policy Hasbro has right now is what happens when you mix a base and acid--the two cancel each other out and you get a relatively middle-of-the-road enforcement policy.

Hasbro’s not Enron. There’s no “hidden” policy or the Board of Directors meeting in a dark room, plotting nefarious schemes. Basically, it’s a clusterfuck. Memos fly from executive to executive and the underlings run around like they’re heads are chopped off. Discord would be right at home. Out of all the chaos, we get their policies. It’s doubtful any one person is responsible (primarily because in business, no one wants to claim responsibility in the event something goes wrong and they have to take the fall). It is instead a carefully calculated negotiation between the numerous executives that has upper management’s rubber stamp of approval on it.

If Hasbro started to get greedy and go after other fandom activities (4chan, art, fanfics, music, etc) I would not defend them. All those fall under Fair Use and I’m a huge advocate of Fair Use. Copyrights and trademarks are only good so long as creativity can flourish. After all, they were implemented in the US to “promote the progress of science and the useful arts.”

@Jimmy Lethal’s card game
>spends last three pages talking about Hasbro’s C&D letters and copyright/trademark infringement
>starts a pony card game (motorcycles optional)

There’s no way this could end badly.

Hmm, so now that I’ve had a bit of time to think about it, here’s the opinion I’ve come to about EQG.

It sucked. I hear people saying “Yeah, the plot line was a little weird…but the humor and characterization was on LOL!!” I hate to break it to you guys, but if something has a shitty story, which Equestria Girls most certainly does, it’s shit. Everything about this movie, from the ridiculous premise to the rushed development of the plot to the shoehorned romance story to the EXTREMELY weird ending just sucked. This movie is a big steamy corporate shit taken by Hasbro.

Don’t lower your standards people. Remember that mlp had to win us over by first being excellent. We never would have gotten into it if it started out with this crap. Take a good hard look at this movie, ignore the fact that it comes from a show and a staff you happen to love, and realize that it kind of sucks.

This movie gets an F from me as I think it fails as a film. The best I can say about it is that it actually starts to reach “So bad it’s good” levels and can actually be enjoyed because of how ludacris it is. Even so, it’s a bad movie and Hasbro should be having their asses flayed for producing it so they don’t get the idea to try something like this again.

Okay… If you’ll allow a small divergence from the previous topics…

I Just noticed that Fluttershy is at this point the only one of the Mane Six without a “Sister”, or any family at all even, regardless of whether its “Adopted” or “Biological”.

Twilight has Shinning Armor and Two Parrents
Rainbow has Scootaloo and a Father
Rarity has Sweetie Belle and Two Parrents WHO TALK!
Applejack has FLIPPING HUNDREDS! Including Big Mac, Applebloom and Granny Smith.
Pinkie has Two Sisters, her Parents, and a Character a few of us have Head-cannoned as her Third Sister (Octavia).

So… Why Do I suddenly feel the need to ask if Fluttershy is an Orphaned Only Child?

Jun 26, 2013 at 11:06AM EDT
Quote

@Fluttershy as orphan
Maybe that would also explain her shyness and timidity, as she then didn’t have parents that could teach her to be assertive. It would also sort of explain that she is very shy around others, as she isn’t taught to handle with other ponies.
Maybe that’s why she likes to be around animals more, as she can communicate with them better than with other ponies, ‘cause she isn’t teached how to do so by her parents, as she didn’t have them as an orphan

@Lunar’s Cover
I’ve seen that thing at least three separate times now, and I only just now saw the bowtie on Vinyl’s horn.
Gold.

And yes, that will be the Hot Topic variant, Jimmy.

@Fluttershy’s Family
I don’t know…
OrphanShy could work, but I kind of like the idea that she was an only child more.
Fluttershy has a tendency to ‘mare up’ when she’s put into stressful situations all on her own, so I would think that if she was an orphan, she would have become a little… ‘tougher’ by now just out of necessity.
(Maybe I just like the tough orphan trope which is why I’m generally okay with Orphan Scootaloo.)
I would guess that she had parents who were highly protective and nurturing, probably to a fault.
Fluttershy would always run to them for protection/hugs/reassurance whenever anything even slightly scary or unknown occurred.
Their well-intentioned sheltering led to accidentally enabling her fears to grow without challenge.
Maybe they did eventually die later on which forced Fluttershy to move out on her own, but I feel like they were at least around for her childhood.

@Jimmy Lethal’s card game
>spends last three pages talking about Hasbro’s C&D letters and copyright/trademark infringement
>starts a pony card game (motorcycles optional)

There’s no way this could end badly.

Do you even watch pirated movies?

I think there’s is still something that they don’t tell us. Ask Hasbro themselves (who have been monitoring some current fanprojects as well for a while). If they refuse to tell something about their polices, take notice.

Let’s turn this thing around: if Hasbro would have no legal rights to go after any fanprojects, do you think they should have that right?

By the way, the quality of the products with a non-company trademark name varies so much that they’re essentially worthless. You don’t know how well you can damage someone’s brand without any legal consequences. I can think of many possibilities.

I can respect an honest opinion, but what’s with this tendancy that people who disliked EQG seem to have of taking the meh story and imposing that none of us should like the entire movie based on pretty much that alone?

I know some of us (myself included) weren’t exactly wowed by the writing when we first watched the show, but we kept watching for the show’s cute characters and funny moments.

EQG had alot of funny moments, and after finding myself overlooking alot of storylines that didn’t particularly interest me in season 1 espicially to enjoy the things I loved about the show, I can’t agree that the movie weighed in nearly as below the standards set by the series to the degree that some people are insisting it did.

@Lunar Protege

That cover is wonderful.

Unrelated yet possibly important thing:

I will be gone from the thread for a while. Not like when I stopped showing up sometime in thread three and then came back for this one because pony, but because I’m going to Italy on the 28th and I won’t be back until the 7th of July.

Just to confirm: I will miss you all VERY MUCH and will be posting irrelevant humerus things here again soon.

Also, if you’re good, I will buy you all a present (probably (not)).

You may now carry on.

First off, Frank Welker is and will always be awesome!
Rock on, Megatron, Scooby-Doo, Freddie, Nibbler, and god only knows how many other thousands of voices and noises he’s played over the years!

Second, really?
Really, Hasbro?
The representative that you send to this event, the one who immediately brings up My Little Pony, the one who talks about bronies, is actually named ‘Bryony’?
I mean, I know you guys a aren’t known for your subtlety but at least try!
(Obviously just a funny coincidence, especially given that she doesn’t seem all that… enthused about bronies.)

As for the possibility of a pony ride at Universal…
Maybe, but probably not for quite a while, if ever.
Transformers made it there because of the success of the huge movies and MLP just doesn’t have that kind of mass publicity yet.
Probably won’t get there ever.
Gotta admit that it would be pretty cool to see though.
I would have to assume that an MLP ride would take cues from The Simpsons Ride (as another 2D cartoon) and that one is great!

@Platus
Have fun in Italy!
Just be sure to watch out for yourself.
She’s been spotted in the area…
