So how many of you here are actually American? Also, since I’m stuck in America, how popular are ponies in other areas of the world?

I’m ’Murican.

Also I just thought of something, in Equestria Girls ‘Cutie Marks’ don’t seem to be a thing there. If that’s the case what do the human Cutie Mark Crusaders call themselves? PUBERTY PURSUERS TAMPON SHOPPING! yay.

Being Dutch, I can confirm internet culture here is limited. I have yet found someone who got all my references with internet jokes (not ponies).

People know bronies exists, that they are men who like MLP, but that’s more where it stops.

I’m English but I have some American heritage so me and my Mum celebrated a little today.

As for pony-popularity, probably not as big here as in America but I’ve encountered a Brony IRL. Quite memorable for me, the guy had a picture of Pinkie up on his phone and was showing us all like “It’s Pinkie Pie!” apropos of nothing.
My two best IRL friends find the whole Brony phenomenon ridiculous and stupid and mock it whenever comes up (though one more than the other) ever since I told them about it a while ago (perhaps last year or so).
Another guy I know loves Derpy but doesn’t seem to give a crap about anything else MLP.
The show itself… Well, I’ve only seen it on once on a semi-obscure girl’s cartoon channel but I haven’t been looking.

Of course, this is just my experience.

I’m technically American.

Also, since I’m stuck in America, how popular are ponies in other areas of the world?

Most people don’t know what a “Brony” is in New Zealand* and if they do know, they might consider it something that only exists in those other countries.

*Or at least I have yet to find anyone that does aside from Stunthead and BP

MLP:FiM is not aired on any NZ TV channels. Gen 4 toys are sold here, but general perception of MLP comes from Gen 3.5. Gen 4 is not understood to be any different.

As such, MLP is about as popular in NZ as Gen 3.5 is anywhere. That is to say: it’s entirely non-notable

I’ve told some of my friends about it and they don’t really know what to think of it, nor do they seem to care. I suspect your average Kiwi reacts the same way: no fucks given.

Kiwi’s need to get creative EG: Set possums on fire and send them running up the phone poles, throwing cans of fly spray into bonfires and sticking sparklers in the sheep.

Oh please, I’ve been throwing bugspray onto fires for years now. Which… explains a lot about me, actually.

I’m technically American.

WHAT?!

@Kewln00b

Thursday was YESTERDAY for me! I can’t believe you forgot! Do I mean NOTHING to you anymore?

Car got blocked by a bunch of thugs and was almost pulled out of my car. (Apparently It’s not a good idea to drive through Insurgentes with a US flag.) I left with a broken window, beaten and scratched paint job, flagless, and with various flat tires. I only left because a patrol car was passing a few minutes after.
I guess some Mexicans don’t like us Americans much.

@ Mexico on ponies.
Ponies aren’t to popular where I live, however, if you go to Guadalajara or a more modern city, you can find a small proportion of bronies. The show is more popular for it’s intended audience than the unexpected one. (Another reason could be the high percentage of Machismo in Mexican society)

Not that they can ever agree where they think I’m from. Most say America, some say Canada, and there was this one person who said Sweden for some Reason…

One of these days… Maybe I’ll move to the Moon and everyone will be all “Where you from” and I’ll say “Look up”. And nobody will be able to say I’m Wrong.

I’m American, as I’ve lived in the colony states for all my life (New York City, now Charleston, SC). I’m pretty sure ponies are big in the UK, Mexico and Germany. I do know a Chinese brony.

Huh? What’s going on here? Squints eyes Oh, we’re talking about American bronies, I guess I’ll join.

As a lot of you already know, I’m from the US, born and raised. East coast, to be more specific. You guys are all talking about how popular and big the bronydom is, but honestly it doesn’t seem to be that big at all on the east side. You would think everyone in America would know what a brony is by this point, and yet I’m still meeting people to this day who are pretty connected with at least some part of the internet and have never heard of them before. Beyond that, I have not met many who have watched the show, and have only met one or two “hardcore” fans. It seems the bronies are all culminated in the west. I mean, there are at least 5 brony cons I can think of the happened on the west coast this year, and yet I can’t think of a single notable brony con that happened in the east. This lack of bronyness strikes me as rather odd, too, because the area I live in is more of the “open minded, artsy nerdy type” as compared to other parts of the US. Eh, I guess people around here are more into superheroes or something.

Man, I’d think being a Chicago Brony is quite a ‘rarity’ (or at least admitting it) considering it’s…..pretty tough out here. A few days ago some guy was killed for standing on literally the wrong side of the street, a guy shot and killed a guy’s baby (trying to kill the father) thinking he stole his Playstation. Seeing the headlines “Man shot for liking My Little Pony” doesn’t seem too farfetched out here. Straps on Kevlar Vest

Hey guys!
Want to know how to have a crappy day?
First, get a big headache!
Check!
Next, have a mom who decides that the entire house needs an extremely thorough vacuuming to lay down a nice, incessant drone.
Check!
Finally, have it be the Fourth of frickin’ July so that some new screech, whistle, pop, or huge explosion is never more than 30 seconds away, but otherwise completely unpredictable.
Oh, big check on that one!

To steal an animation from one of our old regulars:

So…
That was my day!
Hooray!

Hu-wha?
B-but… but you actually… you actually used the name in your sentence…

Pretty much the single biggest pony convention in existence (and the one that got a whole documentary about it last time) is right there in Maryland next month that I totally want to go to but my work is being stupid and won’t let me even though I totally would be there in an instant if it were literally any other week of the entire year!
There was also Big Apple Ponycon in New York back in March.
Considering that the west coast pretty much just has EQLA and Everfree Northwest, I’d say the two coasts are relatively even.
(Haven’t really seen anything in the south east, though…)
If you really want to talk about oversaturation of cons, let’s talk Texas.
I know it’s a big state and all, but there are at least three separate conventions scheduled in Texas just this year!
And I think Ohio has had two already this year, too.
Really, it’s the midwest and central areas that seem to be conapaloozas!

Now it is time for bed, but I’ll leave you with this:

Yep, Toys ’R Us, who brought us that cool Glow In The Dark Zecora last year, are launching a Shadowbolt Rainbow Dash and a Celestia-sized talking Nightmare Moon!
Cool!

Being Dutch too, I can confirm what RandomMan said. Most of my friends know a bit what bronies are (I’m the only one in my friends group that is one), but not really what they do etc. One of them knows a bit more than the rest, he watched some episodes with me, and was watching when I browsed KYM a bit at school, asking me to click the MLP image gallery.
The biggest brony meetup I know of here in the Netherlands consisted out of about 150 people when the previous one was held (April this year). I’m going to next one on the July 27, but as far as I know it’s really small scale compared to Bronycon and the like.

Hey, you guys remember that old map of Equestria I made? Well, I updated it.

In my headcanon, Equestria is a peninsula, surrounded by the Solar Ocean and bordered by Caneighda and Saddle Arabia to the west. The capital is Canterlot and the top three largest cities are Manehattan, Los Pegasus, and San Flankcisco. The population is around 79 million.

Official languages are English (98% of population) and Italian (11% of population). 9% of the population is bilingual. Another 2% speak Spanish, with about .5% being English/Spanish bilingual and .018% being trilingual. The demonym is Equestrian.

The government is a mix of an absolute and constitutional monarchy, with current monarch being Princess Celestia and Prime Minister being Princess Luna. The legislature is a parliament, with the Senate as the upper house and the House of Commons as the lower house.

The currency is the Equestrian bit, about $1.09 in US dollars. Cars and other vehicles drive on the right. The Internet TLD is .equ. Technology is circa 2008 in my headcanon.

Considering your map has Various Inaccuracies compared to the Cannon Map… I’d say “no Dice”.

If you look closely, there are many inaccuracies present in your map. Many minor problems but a Few infuriating ones there as well. But That’s something we can talk about Later, besides, you can fact check at your Leisure…. For now, Let’s look at the Cannon Geography…

From the Equestrian Geography, we can see that the smallest one can think of Equestria is as a Land Bridge between Super Continents. As dirrectly north and South of Equestria the Land actually expands outward, and continues a fair Way. (Note, there is a large area called the “Bad Lands” to the South East which seems to continue a lot longer than your map does in that direction.)

We can Presumably say that the place the ponies left may have been the Northern Continent, which has been Frozen over. While the Southern Continent remains largely undiscovered, probably making it a land of hotter Climates.

Assuming such a theory is correct, either the planet they are on is Massive, or the temperatures in the Northern Continent, and Possibly the Southern one may have some factor keeping them that way. Possibly similar to how Pokemon Gen 3 has the Two Warring Legendary Pokemon that Govern Climates… Except here it would be Hot Vs Cold instead of Rain Vs Drought. Presumably the forces of Cold are in League with the Windigoes.

…Also note in the bottom Right Corner, there’s a note that Says “Dragons be Here”, which generally means nobody has been that far South very often, and no maps have been made. Although one can admit that may mean that Dragon Countries may be that way too, but that’s a given, Dragons show up in a lot of places in Equestria.

I would just Like to point out, as well… We haven’t even gotten to see all of the “Known” Equestria yet. As I can see a little Dark Lit Forrest Village right between Canterlot and Manehatten to the North East.

I stumbled upon this Dutch brony forum a few months ago. They do a lot of small, local meetups that everyone can organize. Every few montsh, at least once every half a year, they organize a big meet, of which the 27th will be number 10. I don’t know what they do on such meets, but it seems like fun, and I can finally meet some other bronies IRL.

Do you even horse puns (although I will give credit for the Mecca/Winnipeg puns and definitely won’t plagiarize them)?

Why Italian? I don’t think there’s been a single “Italian” pony in the entire series. If anything, it should be Caneighdian (okay, it’s not a different language but it does have funny accents, eh?) or some form of Arabic given the close proximity to Saddle Arabia.

Alright, I can finally put my A in GEO 101 to good use.

The super continents connected by an isthmus (a very large one) appears to be jossed given that we know what the planet--well, one hemisphere--looks like:

Sadly, the globe never spins, so technically, there could be two super-continents on the other hemisphere but I like to think that the side shown has Equestria on it (the mountain range shown does appear to match up with the Unicorn Range). Funnily enough, the continents shown appear to be a rough approximate of North America, South America, and Europe so there could very well be a super continent on the other side.

It’s doubtful that the “Southern continent” is unexplored. Given the level of Equestria’s technology (airships, 70’s era computers, transcontinental railroads) it’s likely that there’s very little left unexplored. The “Here be dragons” remark can be seen as quite literal: dragons like there.

It’s unlikely there’s a Gen 3 type scenario here. More than likely, simple climatology is at play, with Wind patterns, ocean currents, and continental factors (land mass, mountains, etc.) all playing a role in how the planetary climate is shaped. The simple fact there’s a desert when the pegasi control the weather seems to indicate that some climatary (yes, I made up the word) factors are out of their control.

It’s also import to recognize the words in the lower left. “Not to Scale.” You can take two approaches to this. Either A) the map is more a work of art and exaggerates the features for artistic reasons Like this:

Or B) it’s one of those “ye olde” maps and cartographers don’t have things precise due to guessing/inaccurate surveys. Like this:

There’s also the fact that all maps have some form of distortion due to trying to fit a sphere onto a 2D plane. This map appears to be a standard Mercator projection map. Mercator maps are accurate at the “equator” but severe distortion occurs the further “North” or “South” you go. Since this isn’t a global map, that means that the Crystal Mountains would suffer distortion while the Badlands/Desert would be the least distorted. There’s also the fact that the map appears to be set at an angle, which would help to correct the distortion by accounting for the planet’s curvature. Regardless, there’s still going to be some form of distortion regardless of the map as only a globe can perfectly replicate the planet.

It’s like Verbose never even left.

If you guys remember, then note that my friends nor I aren’t really from Web Culture, and I started a full-time job this past week. I’m staying with one of my friends until my apartment is ready for me to move into it (in about a week.)

So most of the time, I can’t even get on KYM, because I’m working. I spend another chunk of time commuting, preparing for my apartment, and handling other “employed, grad school graduate” responsibilities…getting renter’s insurance, turning on the electricity, setting up loan repayments, etc.

The time I have in repose is always with my friend, because he lives here, and I sleep on his sofa of sorts. This is enjoyable time for me, but it means I don’t get on KYM long enough (while paying enough attention) to post with any meaningful length (even now, he’s stirring about and I’m chatting with him, making a moderate length post like this take about 30 minutes to type as of this sentence.)

Once August rolls around (i.e., after I’ve moved into my apartment, have gotten a couple of checks under my belt, finished helping with my friends’ wedding,) I’ll probably post a lil’ more often. Believe it or not, I’m probably into the show more than most of the other elder Pony General users are. RM has never been all that gung-ho about the show, and I believe Daniel is in it for teh lulz. BSOD is still just as active, but even he is probably from a later generation of Pony Gen’ners than me (in a way, I’m not even in the very first generation. There were the initial posters in Pony General, but Pony General didn’t exist as it does now.)

There was little show discussion, there was less art being posted (and created)…Pony General seemed less like a General thread and more like a catch-all Just For Fun thread. I came in as a refugee from the MLP:FiM article comments along with a few others who have now died gotten lives and significant others became bloggers for large Pony news sites looked too long at a Shedinja’s hol…wait, this isn’t Hoenn… gone somewhere.

So Pony General didn’t exist in its beginning as it does now. I consider those first, several pages to be a “Generation Zero” of sorts. Pony General did not have the notoriety it has now and has had after about Page 15.

The BSOD tangent aside, I still keep up with pretty much all of the art on Derpibooru that isn’t filtered by my account settings, and I miss my never-ending quest to find new and unearth older Pony tumblrs. I don’t watch as much FiM as I would like (my friend is very weirded out by me being a brony, and I can’t stay up too late to watch episode because of work.)

And even though discussion here is in a bit of a high point in Pony General, I have answered a lot of these questions before, or others have thoughts that I can’t add on much to anyway (e.g., DeadParrot, Crimson Locks, Lunar Protege, Iamslow, etc.)

Just saying that I have time to lurk but not much time to post. If you’ve posted something that’s not too long on my wall or sent me a PM, you’ve probably noticed that I’ve responded fairly quickly. My forum post activity is not as frequent, but my activity is as steady as people initiate communication with me.

Or more simply…

I lurk.

However, it’s the weekend, and my friend has now left for a couple of hours, and he may leave again for another outing later on.

That said…

I’m actually American. I haven’t even left the borders of the US (like a good American.) I’ve lived in the US Midwest for the most recent part of my life, and there seems to be a lot of cons and bronies up that way. However, I currently live and have lived most of my life in the Southeast of the US. There aren’t as many bronies here that I can see since I’ve moved back, and I certainly haven’t seen any cons. Then again, FiM wasn’t a thing until after I left for the Midwest the first time (i.e., the show began to air in October 2010, and I moved to St. Louis in September of that year.) And I haven’t had the financial freedom yet to go out and see if brony events down here would make me want to strangle a filly (I…have never gotten along very well with your stereotypical geek. Even with key exceptions, most bronies I’ve met tend to be as such.)

That follows what is in large brony survey data. There is a large concentration of bronies in the Midwest and the West. There are quite a few respondents in the Northeast and New England too, but there tends to be a high concentration of people in general in the East (Northeast and Southeast), so you could expect there to be a lot of bronies even if the “Brony per capita” isn’t as high as it is in other areas of the United States.

There ain’t nothin’ in the South. I’m not really complaining though.

I don't really want people to understand why I JUST CAN'T STOP LOOKING AT THIS ANIMATION.

I knew there was an official likeness of Equestria, but I thought Jimmy might have wanted to have his own concept of Equestria. The official map (of sorts) isn’t crucial to the canon, so it’s not like his thoughts of where things are or how far they are from each other is a protest against anything (unlike trying to forget that Twilight isn’t a princess or the like.)

I hesitate to call it a true “map,” because of one thing Lunar Protege forgot to mention/notice:

Distance not to scale.

So even though the official depiction is official, it’s not made as a way to navigate. It’s probably a loose way to understand approximately in which direction one needs to go to get to somewhere from somewhere else.

You could go approximately west from Ponyville and end up smack dab in the middle of the Vanhoover. The distance between Fillydelphia and Baltimare and the distance between Fillydelphia and Manehatten may be entirely different.

(Of course, it appears that the known of Equestria mimics that of North America, so Manehatten to Fillydelphia may be the exact same distance from New York City to Philadelphia. It might bring up the whole “Ponies came after humans” thing, but it could just as easily be explained by putting Equestria in an entirely different reality where nothing makes that much sense anyway.

…you know. Because cartoon.

Favorite image of mine.

And remember, just because I don’t post doesn’t mean I left.

Get back to your danged Poni now.

@Map – Keep in mind everybody has their own headcanon, like how that map is part of mine. As for scale, I’d say 1 inch equals, I don’t know, 100 miles?

@RM

How am I not invited as an honored guest yet? How do these peasants not see that I will become the heritage our glorious country is leaving on this fandom? How do they not see that my presence alone would give their measly meetup a huge boost in notability? How do they not understand the glory that is me?

Or is that just in my head?

We should make our own show intro. We just need a rip of the song “Across The Nation” and an animator.

Also, 2,600 get.
