Shouldn’t we be more thinking of the 2016 Olympics.

While 2016 is closer, it still often takes more than half a decade for a city to prepare for hosting the Olympic Games. The entire city needs to be replanned, sometimes areas need to be cleared or expanded for new construction, tourism routes need to be determined, places will need repaired, hotels ensured they’re up to code, and people need to be hired and trained to run everything. Add in finding ways to pass these ordinances AND pay for everything, and the task certainly seems daunting.

Rio 2016 is in the midst of, or finishing up on, most of their work. What’s left is just making sure everything is finished and the technical details are taken care of. It’s going to be almost three years before those games start, so talking about which country is planning for what athletes seems kind of silly, especially when many of those athletes aren’t even sure if they qualify yet.

So unless you want to talk about which corporations are being hired to run Rio in what areas, Tokyo 2020 sounds like a fine topic. Even if it is just city planning speculation, or talking about how this will impact Japan.

It might be a good idea to change the topic to Olympic Games Discussion to cover all of the 2014-2020 games though, just to make sure the topic has a good deal of content to talk about.
