Parameters of "work experience"

Alright so I always see people complaining about needing experience to get entry level jobs like the game is rigged by the Illuminati or something – not knowing volunteer work can count as experience if it's relevant to the job your trying to get.

My question though (and it may be a dumb one) is how LONG exactly do you have to volunteer for it to count as work experience? Does it depend on who your hitting up for a job or is there some kind of precedent?

Asking because I'm getting a very late start on things and I'm trying to kick my ass into gear.

Think more in terms of what you've done rather than exact time spent.

Show accomplishments you've made and your experience speaks for itself

One internship where you complete a project and add it to a portfolio is enough to get you started even if you only spent a month at it
