Mods might have to go outside and find real jobs.
Honestly, though, I don’t think anything will actually change.
If KYM shuts down, I’m gonna make use of my powers for the greater good. Those guys from the FE entry won’t see it coming.
On a serious note, I wonder what is going to happen to our current staff. Actually, will something actually happen?
Actually expanding on the staf???????? :OOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Tbh it’s no suprise Cheez was struggling. Over the years you hear some stuff here and there, and basically Cheez applied a piss poor business model. Company reorganisation on all fronts except top dog six-digit incomes.
Struggling media companies don’t generally get bought out to expand staff, they get bought out and staff is completely replaced and lots of things change. Admins should probably start looking for other jobs.
Dunno how KYM ranks compared to cheezburger in terms of views and stuff tho. I would think it attracts a lot more unique visitors than the image macro sites, maybe it’ll be the thing they do want to observe/expand/hold on to.
I hope they don’t change too much on KYM if they plan on redoing everything.
I’m going to take a guess and say Cheezburger got sold to Reddit. Nothing will happen to KYM at this rate.
Actually expanding on the staf?
Or putting more ads.
No idea what’s going to happen in the future, but the time will tell
Cheezburger, the pioneering online comedy network that brought cat pictures and outrageous videos to millions around the world, has been sold to an undisclosed, newly-formed private media company, GeekWire has learned.
(Emphasis mine)
Okay, so newly formed. What privately held media companies were formed recently?
and, admins, if the site is being killed, can I be given user powers so I can screw around a lot in RR as a farewell?
I really really hope that KYM isn’t affected much. I’ve said for months now that while the site isn’t perfect, I love it how it is. I don’t want any major changes.
Has that weed show Cheezburger’s been investing on generated any returns yet?
It’s kinda sad how a lot of us saw this coming a mile away. I think KYM is just gonna get tossed around with the Cheezburger title for whoever’s buying. KYM was barely affected when Huh stepped down and gave Moore the reigns so this whole thing about being under new management couldn’t be all that drastic; the buyer is probably more interested in the value of the title Cheezburger than whatever it is KYM is doing.
@Rivers

It’s apparently some secretive conglomerate that’s been buying a bunch of Internet properties recently. They’ve been deliberately hiding themselves to avoid publicity, for whatever reason.
I can’t say I have any idea what to make of that.
Rip Cheez. Everyone start backing KYM up to your floppies so we can continue the forums! Besides, you never know when you’ll need a spare copy.

I can’t tell if this sounds like the beginning of something good or the beginning of a dystopian novel.
I am pretty sure that once we have an idea on exactly who now owns Cheezburger we can then decide whether its a good idea to panic. I just hope nothing serious happens to KYM, this site has grown a lot on me and I’d hate to see it go down the shitter.

Big Blubber is watching.
Really the only reason why this is happening is because lolwork didn’t run for longer than 6 episodes, I’m sure if it did we’d all be throwing meme money at them.

I vote we start a rebellion against our new Illuminati overlords by shitposting nonstop in Riff Raff about how awful this is.
How much influence did cheez have on KYM though? I know they own the site but did they ever force changes on KYM or did they mostly leave KYM to its own device?

Well that doesn’t sound the least bit sinister.
Still, I’ll wait until they reveal themselves before (if ever) I freak out.
So! Who’s up for wildly speculating as to the identity of the buyer?

Some suggestions from the IRC I’m okay with:
Blubber
Jacob
Taryn
Loli
Don
Some suggestions from the IRC I’m NOT okay with:
Putin
Anonymous
Epyc Wyn
The Koreans
Speaking seriously, there’s really not any way to know, at least not easily. It’s apparently a newly formed group who’s collecting sites like Cheezburger, I guess. We’ll have to wait and see.
He described the buyer as a privately held media company…
The buyer has deep expertise in working with online advertisers, Moore said…
>inb4 Gawker bought us
Maybe they’ll dump a little money here instead of investing in marijuana sitcoms.

Oh, so Sheldon Adelson bought us.
SAVE EVERYTHING
I, for one, welcome our new meme overlord.

I don’t need to buy this site. Every user on this site is already one of my alt accounts. Except for a single user, but I won’t say which user that is so they go insane thinking they’re the only ones who aren’t my alt.

It’s a little known fact, but they get paid in Happy Feet Blue-Rays.
Ha! I told you I could Deactivate!
Deactivated
Loli, you’re relieved of your duties. All other admins will be on leave without pay. KYM shuts down this March 31.

Hello all!
As mentioned and linked in the original post, Cheezburger, the parent company of Know Your Meme, has been recently acquired by a private media company (the name of which shall remain undisclosed for another two weeks due to business-related reasons). And as a result of the deal, Know Your Meme will be operating under the roof of the new parent network. At this moment, here are all the facts that we can confirm in terms of its impact on the operation of this site:
- KYM has not been acquired by The Trump Organization LLC.
- KYM will continue to do what it does best; just good ol’ memes (and fetishes) as usual.
- KYM will not be affected in any way in terms of staffing and organizational structure.
- KYM users will not have to back up anything on floppy disks, CDs or ZIP drives.
- KYM will be able to optimize and improve the quality of display ads in collaboration with the new parent publisher, which has a whole lot of experience and expertise in online advertising.
With that being said, thank you all for your concerns for the site and please stay tuned for more details, as we will certainly provide all the information we receive as they become available. If you’re not interested in tech business news, feel free to keep calm and meme on.

And here I was worried that we would have to migrate to a new meme site.

KnowYourFetish spinoff when?

…being a meme moderator is my only reason for living.
It is from which I glean my only sense of worth.
What I never said when I left the site in search of self-discovery and Mega Lopunny images is that I found…nothing.
…and a lot of Mega Lopunny images.
But mostly nothing. But seriously the Lopunny images I found were choice tho but aside from that, nothingness
After sitting atop of some cliché mountain top that was actually my toilet after eating at the Korean place with the Chinese food and mostly Latino workers, I realized that my life, like my commode upon which I sat, was full of loose feces.
And it occurred to me after the second third flush after the second plunger sequence after the sixth wipe that the only thing that brought meaning to my life was using an actually lacking vocabulary to intimidate and otherwise impress people averaging 4-8 years less experienced than me and loosely moderating a meme site.
…I can’t let that sense of identity…that meaning… wane again. Or my Lopunny stash. I can’t let that wane either.
…Brad, hearing that KYM will still be KYM…it’s too much. Ironically, it’s almost more relief than I can bear.
Th-Thank you.
But seriously, KYM has a unique niche for online web culture. To my knowledge, we’re really the only site that does a decent job of documenting web phenomena in an organized manner. Even if the site was nixed in any upper level swapping, there would be some actual “need” to document online phenomena, and KYM probably best suits that especially as it moved from strictly “memes” to events, people, sites, and the like which can be serious or lighthearted.
“KYM will continue to do what it does best; just good ol’ memes (and fetishes) as usual.”
You forgot Dontroversies. Lots and lots of Dontroversies.

If anything your lucky, all i seem to get is ads for Hentai websites. The weird part is that the only websites i go to on my Kindle Fire are KYM and Youtube … … … … … wait a minute
If it’s a new company, that rules out Valnet. Which is good. That company is click-bait cancer.

Didn’t Disney say the same thing to Lucasart right after they bought them?

KYM got taken over by a new company – you won’t believe what happens next!
My guess is that the new company is going to dig up old memes and convert them to money.
Important update, guys! According to KYM’s administrators, KYM will NOT shut down, and everything will remain the same, except that there will be no more Taboola clickbait on the site.

Now I hope that the new ad system won’t cause the site to be a few seconds slower when loading.

Well, I haven’t seen any load time differences, but it should be noted this is showing up:
It’s auto-playing, and it shows up inside many entries.
Does this mean that the reporting auto-playing ads thread needs to be locked, because the new management says auto-play going to be part of the site now?
I still miss the old staff.
