Anonymous is little more than a miniature dog that can be sicked on the government.

Okay, so the UN has declared internet use to be a human right.

Unfortunately, the bill we're discussing here is about censorship. The way it sounds like it works in my head is that they block all access to a site. Technically that's not cutting access to the internet, just certain sites that potentially infringe copyrights.
It's a step in the right direction, but it's not quite there yet.

@PwNeDoScAr
It depends on how far they take enforcing anti copy infringement, on the other hand, rich corporations can get around it, like every other thing in history so far.

@Kalmo

She still stands a legitimate chance in the 2012 elections, to be honest, I think the average American is dumb enough to vote for her, just because she has taken the media spot light.

So, yeah I'll laugh my ass off when she wins, and I sure hope she wins, for shits and giggles of course.

If she wins I will have lost all faith in America.
Which is why I know who I'm voting for.

Fuck yeah…

While possible, I think it's unlikely.
We (being Americans, I don't know where you're from.) hardly vote in the current democracy.
If we did vote, and had good information about issues (unfortunately somewhat lacking) it might work, but in our current setting…we aren't quite ready, I don't think.

Although Anonymous would be far-left, I'm not 100% sure I could trust them, but I'm not sure I can trust anyone. We need the kind of left democracy that is fair for all people.

Either way, it would not be perfect. There a some people, like yourself, who do not have easy access to ballots, and cannot afford cars, and there are those who don't have computers. Heck, there are still people who can't even read and don't have TVs. If we combined different mediums of voting, it might be fair to everyone, but even still there are still problems, such as the vote being skewed by the electoral college, in which a significant majority claims the electoral vote over the minority, and in turn causes a full 100 votes of "republican" for example, whereas if it was truly democratic there could've been a result of 80-20, and that difference may affect the outcome of the entire election. And of course there is the problem of corruption. For all of these reasons, many people have lost faith in the broken system. Of course the last unspoken check in the governmental system was always an armed revolt of the people, which is not likely, but still there as an option if all hope is lost. Internet now, freedom the next, let's hope it doesn't come to a civil war.

If we overthrew the government, the corporations would seize power.
Imagine having to pay the police if you get attacked.

That's an interesting kind of logic there…
How does sexuality make someone better/worse at judgment?

You've never met a a bad gay person before, and if you did your racist.

I think something bad has already happened, Sweatie Killer has said something that I agree with!
But back to the thread at hand, I believe that this is all bullshit. The internet honestly has no physical incarnation, therefore making it seemingly non-existent. This reminds me of the South Park "Imaginationland" story arc where the Govt. tries to nuke our collective imaginations in order to kill a few terrorists. The internet exists because of us, and therefore by the Freedom of Speech, the government is restricted from interfering with it.

If you guys really want to do something, try logic before hacking. Contact your representatives- state & federal- with a strong argument against this bill. If you don't want sarah palin to be president, contact your state legislature (whom decides ELECTORAL vote) with a strongly worded argument of why.

Come on, you guys should have learned this in high school.

But if they disregard you, feel free to launch the invasion of anonomous upon their foolish sites.

The electoral college decides the electoral vote. The state legislatures draw the Congressional Districts

Does anyone feel a similarity between Sarah Palin, and Princess Diana?

Cause I'm feeling it.

I guess, I mean the only real difference is that Sarah Palin won't die in a car crash.

Edit: Which would be bad.

Normally I support my government on everything! Yes I love government and all that. But as of recently the government is deteriorating. And now I learn they are trying to censor the Internet!
That's where I jump off the bandwagon.

This is unacceptable.
You can't censor the Internet! You'll regret this government if you go through with it.

Not to mention I feel like this is to support sheltering or something like that.

My opinions are basically what everyone else is saying.

They shouldn't be allowed to do this, not in the US, at least, as it impedes with the First Amendment. It would be unlawful. I don't even give two craps about politics and I know that, so technically, that makes everyone in this thread who disagrees with the act better politicians.

I'm scared for America.

Also, has anyone besides me emailed their senators yet?

WAIT WAIT WAIT! HOLD THE PHONE!!! CENSORING THE INTERNET!? THIS IS BREAKING FREEDOM OF SPEECH THE INTERNET IS OUR SPEECH! AND THERE RUINING IT!? They think just because they are the government they can do what ever they want. Our founding fathers our face palming up in heaven

This is against our Constitutional Rights, yes, protecting against copyright infringement it good, but we don't yet have the technology to properly do it. I have become very enraged by our government, and we should get rid of our current government and replace it with a simpler one, one that the average American could understand.

I'm surprised this bill has even seen the light of day, let alone get this far. Nonetheless, there is no way this bill will get passed. Someone will eventually challenge it and every court will constantly throw it out on the grounds that the bill is unconstitutional. The same has been done with the infamous California law that regulates video games; court after court threw it out until it hit the supreme court. Sure, the obvious exception to this rule is the PATRIOT Act, though that has more to do with the hysteria at the time as well as the general stupidity of the masses and government leaders. Bottom line, this bill will never make it into office. Too many people are opposed to such a thing and too many active participants exist in our country where it at least should be enough for someone to challenge the bill, and most likely win. Besides, even if we lose, we still have proxies.

>Implying the average American has a say in this bill

That's the price we pay for a representative democracy.

On an unrelated note, I just tried to greentext on KYM.

This really makes me sick.
But doing raids on government websites WILL NOT help, because that just makes people say "Well, these websites are causing people to do illegal activities and sabotage the government! They should be blocked for the safety of teh country!!11one"
Just be rational and make a CONSTRUCTIVE email to your senator or representative about why the bill shouldn't pass and then they might listen.
Getting all whiny about it in an email will help nobody.

We have a say in the bill, we decide who writes it.

So, the PROTECT IP (Preventing Real Online Threats to Economic Creativity and Theft of Intellectual Property) act just made it through the Judiciary Committee. This would give the government the power to censor websites without due process. (In other words, without a court order. Specifically, they would be able to censor anything anytime they want, with nobody stopping them.) Fortunately, Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR) has put a hold on the bill.

Here is the full text of the bill

This is serious business. It didn't die in committee, and soon enough, it will come to a vote, and if it gets through the Senate, it will definitely get through the House, and then it's cake for it to become law. SO E-MAIL YOUR SENATORS, TELL THEM NO!

Ok, I read the first half of this bill before I decided tl;dr. However, unless I misunderstood things, I don't see where it says that domains will not be given due process… It says that, "On application of the Attorney General… …the court may issue a temporary restraining order, a preliminary injunction, or an injuction…" It seems like the bill basically says that the Attorney General can submit paperwork to a panel of judges, and the judges can decide what sort of action to take. While injunctions can be harsh, there's plenty of legal precedence on the matter, it's nothing new, and certainly something that a court already has the right to do.

What I find disturbing is the fact that this bill allows for the government to take legal action against non-domestic domains, that is to say domains that are not based in the United States, as well as their non-domestic owners, as well as the fact that it requires advertisers to not fund the websites that the applications are against.

That's the problem; they don't listen. No longer is there any concern for the people. This is why we must pursue these alternative methods of protest.

Hmm, they won't listen and think the interwebs should be censored?
I know!! Let's spam them with nyan/rick astley/goatse/Bombard them with DDoS attacks/do a raid on the chamber of commerce!! That'll show them that the internet is fine the way it is and shouldn't be censored!!
THINK, guys!

Two words: PATRIOT Act.

That didn't get stopped in court. In fact, it just got renewed.

The powers of intrusion granted to the government in the patriot act pale in comparison with the federal colonoscopy the IRS can arbitrarily impart. How come no one bitches about that anymore?
Do the powers granted to the IRS even need to be renewed like those provided in the patriot act?
