It’s hard to proceed with violence when innocent children are present. For example, in To Kill A Mockingbird, Scout’s innocent attempt at small talk with one of the guys in the lynch mob (can’t remember his name, but he’s the father of a friend of hers) is basically the sole reason the lynch mob backs down.
