It’s the most complicated relationship, no doubt and it’s hard to explain in simple terms. The best way I can put it is this:

You basically stand in between two things that could potentially destroy each other (figuratively and literally) and prevent them from doing just that.

In other words you are a peacekeeper/moderator for those two things
