But then I realized it was actually the spirit of my long-dead girlfriend who committed suicide because she was super perfect and was trying to defeat the Sanic Ghost to relieve me of my guilt, then something happened

It turns out Sanic was Cale' dead girlfriend. She was fighting her own memories.
