1. Yes if you have the right programs. If you mean outside of the game at least.
2. Yes but all objects fro HL2 will appear as big exclamation marks.
3. If you only have Portal then its not, if you had the Orange Box and CS:S it would be more than worth it.
I always get big error things, not exclamations.
