Forum Game: Nation RP

This is a semi-role play game based on modern nation states. I’ve done this game on a few other forums with a lot of success, and with a good group of players it can be really fun.

What you do, is select a nation to play as, and then guide it to world conquest. It is mostly role play based, with no true set of rules on anything except military actions, which will be detailed later in this post. However, non-military actions (such as technology, especially) can effect the outcome of battles. Although the NPCs will be mostly passive and inactive, present day issues do apply to NPC diplomacy (American forces deployed about the globe, crisis in Libya, NATO and the EU alliances, etc.) so take note of that before making any major changes to your nation’s foreign policy.

How military works: I will not be recording exact numbers of anything, because the game becomes too cumbersome. This is something I have tried to do before, and it never works when trying to keep track of exact numerals, so don’t ask for it. Instead, I use a general word bank and ratings to determine armies and the outcome of battles. The word bank is like this:

Quantity: None, Miniscule, Small, Average, Big, Massive, All-Consuming
Quality: Peasant, Militia, Draft, Trained, Specialist, Professional, Invincible

So, for example, Israel would probably start with a “Miniscule Professional Army” military rating, while North Korea would start with a “Massive Militia Army” military rating. Military ratings can be increased through technology gains (mostly improves quality), conquests (which free up resources needed to better train and equip men), diplomacy (trading and the like), and politics (drafts, nationalizing the military industry, etc.).

Each IRL day is worth 6 game months, we start in Summer 2011, and your nation’s actions are sent to me via PM. If I have left out anything crucial to gameplay that needs to be known, ask me and I will tell it. I always leave out something >_<

Post in this thread to reserve a nation and map colour. Gameplay starts tomorrow (don’t send me PMs yet).

That is one epic flag. It’s like, “My flag is 2 triangles on top of each other, your argument is invalid.” We all get something epic though. You get an epic flag, and I get epic assassins.

This sure was featured quickly.

@EP73: Black is the colour of borders. You can’t have that. I’ll give you dark grey instead.
@ SK: White is the colour of NPC nations, and the north pole has no population or even a landmass. You can’t have that. I’ll give you Finland and light grey.
@ JL: Red is taken. I’ll give you maroon.

I don’t think you can have Hawaii; it’s still technically America.

Notes: I forgot to mention GDPpc (Gross Domestic Product per capita). This is your economic rating(Lowest, Low, Medium, High, Highest), and will determine whether or not your nation collapses under strain, and how good your military quality is. Quality depends on economy, which is improved mostly through trade and a little through conquest. Quantity is dependent upon population, and improves through conquest only. Future techs may also alter both indirectly, depending upon what kind of technology it is.

Future tech takes a while to research, and you can only pick one technology at a time, to save on confusion and clutter. The time it takes to research depends upon how game breaking it is (death star will take forever, laser rifles take less time) and how good your economy is.

Nulcear power status requires trade (black market or legit) with uranium producers, as well as a fairly good economy to sustain a large nuclear stockpile. Again, exact number will not be counted, and instead the power of a nuclear attack will be dependent upon GDPpc, military quality, and nation size. You cannot hide nuclear power status. If you have WMDs, everyone will know.

I tried to make everyone start out with a fair military size and quality dependent upon real life, but I don’t want to shuffle through a ton of figures, so it is mostly speculation.

Also, Finland and Vietnam are not yet on the map. Dunno why I forgot Vietnam, but I recognize it, and will fix it with tomorrow’s post. Finland is not being added because I now recognize SK’s attempt to join as the north pole as joke, rather than a real submission.

If there is anything else I fogto to mention, let me know!

Egypt’s GDPpc was ranked 138th in 2010. While it’s not significantly high, I wouldn’t rank it as lowest. No offense, Red Syndicate.

Also, Russia is 55/56 on the GDP scale on Wikipedia, so I would say medium.

I was using a map with Purchasing Power Parity relative to the USA to determine that. Of course the map was from 2003, but I figured not much has changed since it was made. Egypts PPP was 20% of the USA’s so I put it as lowest. Technicaly you are not the lowest in the world, just in the lowest category.

Don’t worry though, it won’t be hard to raise it up a bit with some creativity, but I’m not going to tell you what to do.

edit: I realize that I had put other 20% nations, like Russia and China, into the Low category, but Egypt is all by itself as Lowest. I will change that now.

Sorry, Doc, but 138th? Out of somewhere in the neighborhood of 230 countries in the world. I’ve got news for you: that sucks. I think you should stay with me and Vietnam in the “lowest” and learn to like it.

If you Egyptian Muslims would just learn to be more laid back like us Hindus and Buddhists, you wouldn’t have your shorts in a twist. At least accentuate the positive: Here in Nepal, we have Mt. Everest, as well as seven more of the world’s ten highest peaks. In Egypt, you’ve got a rich ancient history and (a good portion of) the longest river in the world. And Vietnam’s got…um…er… I guess they’ve got this?

Then we should take all of that territory out of Antarctica? Because I don’t think Australia owns 1/3’rd of Antarctica >___<.

I was going off of this map:

And that treaty only extends to creating new claims in Antarctica, and does not affect claims that were already in place before the treaty.

Lots of countries, like Russia, do have research stations there and yet hold no claims. So RussianFedora, if you want me to add your claims to that map you will have to violate that treaty. Honestly its not worth it, as nobody lives there and we currently lack the ability or ambition to exploit the resources under the ice and snow.

I was under the impression that ‘lowest’ would qualify as under $5,000 per capita, and since Vietnam’s is $3,100 and Nepal’s is $1,200 (circa 2010), and Egypt’s is $6,200, it might be a significant enough difference. Apparently not.
