You're right. Its not a meme (ie its never been an individual internet-based societal object) but because of its large influence upon memes and online activity, it is classified as a subculture.
Know Your Meme is not a site specifically made for documenting memes. While KYM primarily documents, it also documents large internet figures (HuskyStarcraft, Nicholas Cage, Chuck Norris, Vladimir Putin, etc), events (Operation Forever Alone, tumblr's "Call your Senator," the blackout against SOPA, etc) and subcultures (TF2, Starcraft 2, MLP, WH40K, Adventure Time). Therefore, bacon can have its own article on this site so long as its classified as a subculture, which it is.
