"Speculative Biology" Meme or not?

Essentially, speculative biology is the art of using scientific principles to determine how life could evolve under hypothetical circumstances (eg, “What if monotremes became the dominant animals after the dinosaur’s extinction?”; “How would life cope on a planet with low gravity?”, etc).

The reason I’m making this thread is because speculative biology has become a sort of subculture all around the internet, amongst scientists and non-scientists alike, spawning numerous artworks, websites (such as the currently defunct “Snaiad”), and even a few books. I personally think this has gotten more than enough momentum to count as a meme, but i wanna know what others think first.

Hanar: You’re wrong.

Although the scientific quality of that is debatable.

Zoxphyl: Regarding “speculative biology”, I think that it’s a little too specific for the types of subcultures that get documented here. It seems as if that forms a part of a larger world-building type of subculture, but that’s a little too broad a label.
