Now its almost all Pop Culture. I get the feeling they are getting more and more mainstream every day (ex: Balloon Boy, Kanye Interrupts)

You have just spotted the most prevalent trends in memes. The problem is is that the internet is starting to become what television was: a place for stupid pop culture. Everything is based around celebrities now. It's not like you can post a highly original, funny, and smart video to YouTube and you will become noticed anymore. Nowadays, it's more about the brand than the content.

This also applies to memes. Memes, back in the early to mid 2000's, used to be mostly (if not all) internet based. That's because there weren't as many people on the internet and the hierarchy of users and celebrities wasn't as clear as it is today. Since not as many were on, and there was not as much on the internet as there is today, there was more original content and memes. But today, most memes are celebrity related because more people are on the internet and they care more about celebrities than content. We need to create more memes that really start on the internet instead of the media because it destroys original content.
