My question:
When will catchphrase be memes and when will they not be?

I know I've been asking this for a long time, but it still bugs me since I'm too scared to create an entry which is about catchphrases…

Was the catchphrase something that most people became familiar with simply by watching a movie or playing a video game? Was that catchphrase designed by the writers of the production to be a catchphrase?

If you answered yes, then the catchphrase did not need the internet to become recognizable.

Has the popular catchphrase been given a new context aside from its original intention? Was the catchphrase an obscure moment from a long-forgotten piece of media that later turned into an in-joke within one community? Did that joke then spread through exposure in forums, rather than just the original media?

Then it's probably an internet meme.
