not sure if this is already confirmed or not, but if not this might be the first meme ever.

im pretty sure everyone whos ever tried computer programming is familiar with the “hello world” program.

heres a wiki

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hello_world_program

I’m not sure that ‘Hello, world’ would qualify as a ‘meme’ although programmers have used tongue-in-cheek references to it as a joke/easter egg for a very long time. I think a case can be made for including the term ‘Hello, world’, although the program itself wouldn’t be considered the first meme.

A lot of people have accepted the idea of emoticons as the first internet meme, although the jury is still out on that one.

Well its got to be popular over the internet, but a program is not on the internet, a program is on your computer.

i’m a programmer myself, I’m getting my degree in computer science in a few days. the “hello world” program is just a dummy application to test out any language or framework, or as a first exercise for rookies.
