Been having trouble tracking this one down. Everybody just says "from Japanese anime, originally called 'kuma' (bear)"

I found this thread related to a manga called Kodomo no Jikan but I think that may have came after Pedobear blew up
http://4-ch.net/anime/kareha.pl/1192867630/

does anyone know where the original art is from? is this 4chan original…?

I've been really wondering about this one for a long time.
It bothers me that I don't know the origin of one of my favorite memes. But it's such an obscure sourse, that I can't find it.

I'm thinking it's like Yotsuba; supposed to be in an anime, but it was never made. Otherwise, it'd be pretty well known.

… I'm making this into a movie.

"The Origin of Pedobear"

It will be like the DaVinci Code, National Treasure, and Indiana Jones combined. It will star Tom Cruise, Christopher Poole, Richard Mongler, and Seth Rogan.

It will be a major flop that will ruin the careers of many, many people and eventually lead to my death, draped over a subway bathroom stall toilet drowning in a pool of cocaine and blood.

And I will make a movie about Dave's short and strange life starring crude brown paper bag puppets and Gary Busey as Dave. I will show it in my backyard using a projector and a blanket hung over a tree branch. The movie will receive rave reviews from Grandma Blubber.

I've done some research on my own, seem like pedobear originaly come from 2chan (also known as futaba channel).

Pedobear is the 4chan re-make of the 2chan character known as Kuma-san (Mr. Bear). Much like many famous lines and ideas from 2chan, the "Americanization" of Kuma-san turned him into the sinister Pedobear, known for molesting female children and giving awards for those who do it like he would. Pedobear has even appeared in the webcomic Nana's Everyday Life where he forces himself on the unfortunate, limbless girl, much to her obvious dismay. Pedobear, along with Happy Negro, Cockmongler, and Longcat is easily one of /b/'s most cherished and respected memes. He has many friends, each of them taking an animal form and representing a different fetish.

That's all I found, for the rest I think we need some investigation in 2chan itself.
Somebody here talk japanesse? XD

I’m throwing another 8 internets into the pool for anyone that can find the answer.
[…]
Also, once you deliver the answer, you’ll automatically get a (x1000)1 multiplier bonus from thin air.

Couldn't you throw in one more internets to make them translate:http://injoke.blogspot.com/2008/05/over-9000.html into English?

last time, on encyclopedia dramatica …

for what it's worth, pedo-bear wasn't always alone. he had domo-kun tag along for the funneh and the lulz.

the pedobear image came from 2chan, about the same time as they were pushing domo-kun. while domo died an hero, pedo bear was by measures, less annoying than the snake/mushroom meme or the domo-kun meme of the day.

i barely remember this, but the story being pimped on ED at the time was, a user posted on /b/ about being arrested by the feds, and being /b/, started to talk it up and give people some great details about his home videos, and then how he'd scope out kids he wanted to film, etc. hanging out at daycare, dressing up in a bear suit for kids ??, etc.

knowing /b, it just sounds plausible from this point onwards, somewhat like reading a deadjournal report on a guy who nails his testicles to a school chair… you get the idea.

in an attempt to validate or back his shit up, people found this "Happy Bear" child molestation awareness costume → http://www.blankchildrens.org/body.cfm?id=291 .

soon after all the obligatory WTF and LOLz, people started to ask for pics of the costume, and lo, he came. likely the peeking kuma-chan pic, which was ultimately more funny than all previous attempts, and that just overtook the OP. just like all popular threads. and thus, a meme was born.

i.e. here's a google news link to "happy bear", the only damn story about it i could find, from the St. Petersburg Times, 1987, http://news.google.com/newspapers?id=9wUNAAAAIBAJ&sjid=UWEDAAAAIBAJ&pg=3266,3707533&dq=bear-suit+children

Here's a picture of Rin from Kodomo no Jikan. http://www.animekon.com/image-801.html The manga began in 2005, so it may be plausible. Plus, from what I understand, it's very loli. However, the bear in the pic doesn't look quite like the Pedobear we want.

And based on a Google translation of this page: http://d.hatena.ne.jp/keyword/%A5%AF%A5%DE%A1%BC the Pedobear image may have started out as an ASCII Art on 2ch called "Kumâ".

Excellent work so far.

Searches for "Pedobear" began in 2004.
http://www.google.com/insights/search/#q=pedobear&date=1%2F2004%2012m&cmpt=q

The image of Rin does look a lot like Pedobear, but it is either coincidental, or the artists were inspired to draw Rin to look like Pedobear for some reason or another. But since Kodomo no Jikan was serialized in 2005, one year later that searches for "Pedobear" it can't possibly be the origin.

The ASCII art looks very much like Pedobear. But since this was posted in 2009 it's not clear if the ASCII art was inspired by the drawing, or vice versa. It's also likely that the ASCII bear had been used prior to this posting. More research is needed.

Here is the translated version of the page. It ruins the ASCII art but puts the conversation somewhat into context.

So, we need to search for usage of the term "Pedobear" in the year 2004 in order to solve this puzzle. The standing prize is well over 9000 internets to whomever can find THE FIRST intance of pedobear. I don't know exactly how said internets will be delivered, but I imagine it's a lot like receiving a Deeksha from Chris Hansen.

Kai, I ran across that as well.

It could be that both Pedobear and the bear in Kodomo no Jikan came after a larger Japanese trend of depicting bears with a similar style. But I think we'll need some hardcore anime-fans (those who know a lot about the trends of different drawing techniques used in anime) to help us out with that theory.

It's also possible that the bear from Kodomo no Jikan was an inside-joke visually referencing Pedobear. But again, I'm just speculating.

I found this article on wikipedia…in Suomi. I translated it,(badly), and I think it might shed some light:

"Pedobear is available on the Internet spread the smiling figure described the bear, which is a pedophile. Pedobear is a picture forum 4chan from the variation 2channel Kuma-called karhusta.1 original Kuma-bear no interest to young girls, as its occidental counterpart is known. Pedobear is one 4chan famous memes.

Pedobear name was introduced in 2004 4chan discussion areas. Some users there began inside joke in which someone wrote in an ASCII-art message, in which Osaka Phone (refers Bananaphone-singing, and Azumanga Daioh manga-series Ayumu "Osaka" Kasugaan) says something, and someone answered the message, which is responsible for Kuma Osakalle. The messages started to become a sexual-oriented discussions progressed, some of which came to mind that Kuma would be "pedo" young Osakaa point. Thus Kumāsta muunneltiin Pedobear, whose image is seen as connected, inter alia, of the forum messages, then, where are pictures of minors tytöistä.1

Pedobearia seen as connected to the various images, and it also occurs, for example, a flash animation in the. Figure also shows, among other things Clone manga Nana's Everyday Life web comic in a stripissä.2 Negima!?-Anime series in Section 9 flash Kumān or Pedobearin image warning billboard "

I believe that this means it was ASCII art of the teddy bear from Jinkan, or just a regular bear from 2chan, or something similar, and 4chan decided that it was going to molest Osaka from Azumanga Daioh.

I think maybe the image of pedobear was 2chan ASCII art, and Jinkan referenced it. 2chan references are fairly common in anime and manga.

he was stolen from the Japanese-language 2ch, where he was originally called Kuma (literally; "Bear". Oh those imaginative Japanese!). While Kuma was generally lecherous, Pedobear is the mascot for 4chan's legion of slavering pedophiles, specifically targeting prepubescent girls (or "loli"). Like Cockmongler and Happy Negro, Pedobear is the subject of many bad photoshoppings, usually being pasted into whatever piece of child pornography the b-tards have got their paws on. For unknown reasons Pedobear’s origins have also been linked to the internet spawned deity Cthulhu. There's also a team of similar animals – Scat Rat, Shota Cat, Watersports Pig etc – but nobody gives a shit about them.

So, Pedobear was a 2ch original character, that was brought to 4chan in response to Osakaphone. People asked why a bear would be calling Osaka, and it was decided that he is a pedophile. Seems like that's it.

Someone decided a bear was calling Osaka. People wanted to know why. They decided to come up with a reason. The reason for this bear to call a high school girl, they decided, was that it wanted to have sex with her. Thus pedophilia.
Don't count on the internet making sense.

What is the connection between calling Osaka and pedophilia? Logic doesnt make sense.

The Osaka thing may be from her airheaded-ness, and the "OH MY GAWD" thing with Chiyo's "father." And her stupidity, or lack of any useful braincells, and her best friend is 11/12 years old. Total Pedobear fodder. Or just 2ch. Either one.

So Pedobear was most likely created when 4chan decided that it was Kuma who called Osaka in the Osakaphone-flash, and that that's the reason he's pedophile?

Maybe completely unrelated, but the first Altavista search result for ''pedobear'' dates from Februari 2004, on an italian site containing this picture:

''Original site'':http://www.mondourania.com/urania/u921-940/urania927.htm

found this:

http://www.sukueya.com/catalog/seal.html

The site describes itself as a "two-channel fan club "SUKUE shop" site."

Keep scrolling and you´ll find "safety bear" or "safety kuma" in a picture that resembles the "pedobear seal of approval" far beyond any reasonable doubt.

This is the theory I´ve heard:

Safety bear was created to adress to children on safety issues, so, he was often portrayed in the company of small children.

It was a matter of time before someone make the suggestion that perhaps safety bear was a pedo, somewhere around that time it was adopted by 4chan and the rest is history.

Pedobear or also Pædobear (not to be confused with Medved (translated version) is one of the more famous and long running 4chan memes. He actually originated from Japan, where he was called Kuma, literally "Bear". Some argue the Japanese omitted the "Pedo-" prefix to avoid redundancy since most anything churned out in Japan is assumed to promote pedophilia.

While Kuma was generally lecherous, Pedobear became the mascot for 4chan's legion of knuckle-dragging pedophiles, targeting prepubescent girls, or "loli", but doesn't mind a boy or two (two years old that is). Like King Leonidas and each subsequent wave of Lolcats, Pedobear is the subject of many bad photoshoppings, usually pasted into whatever piece of child pornography b-tards get their filthy paws on.

Pedobear has become so popular newfag and 12 year olds alike flock to /b/ under the impression that that they can find more "funny" Pedobear pictures. This is similar to the populairty brought on by the previously mentioned lolcats. Sadly some poorly informed Anonymous refer to him as Pedrobear believing that to be his real name.
