Can you suspend a rule breaker for not knowing the rules?

Have a question here. a friend of my's got her account suspend for apparently spamming. Now in most case I wouldn't care if someone on this site was suspended but because said user was not only a friend but also my sister I have to ask. Is the suspension really necessary when the user has no idea about a rule that they're unaware of said rule?

It's a given, however;
I notice you can't actually see the forum rules until you quote something in the forums. There isn't even a specified link to them. My bad. Just noticed the link, though my mind kinda looked over it because it was in the User and Voting Bar. It might be beneficial to relocate that above or below the text box.
-There still isn't any sort of link to the posting rules for comments.

So if it where not a case of somebody breaking something that would be considered a universal rule, I would stand up and defend them. But in this case, no, they deserved to be suspended.

Trust me folks there's nothing sketchy going on here nor is this thread an excuse for me to say the mods suck. The fact that two different mods helped me out with several trolls problems in the past sort of negates any negative feeling I might have( Which is an accompaniment since I have a mistrust on those in power) I'm just saying that suspending a user who has no idea about a rule shouldn't be suspended. If anything a message telling them that they're spamming would do. Also she wasn't spamming in usually way, she was just posting images on the reaction faces gallery and wasn't aware of there being a limit of how much one should post on one gallery.

You don't even know the standard procedures; you can't decide whether the punishment was right or not. I was actually talking with the mods in the IRC today, and it turns out a 48-hour suspension is the standard for spamming. Besides, if this is the same person we were discussing in relation to spamming, and, considering it's on the same day, may well be, they actually had received multiple warnings and irritated replies from mods and other users. (EDIT: It's not, but someone else did get warnings and an eventual suspension today).

If you hate this site as much as you seem to, maybe you should just go somewhere else and stay there. I hear /b/ likes your kind.

PS don't bother with the "It's a persona" excuse you've used on the mods. You were just as bitter and annoying under your previous alias(es). I'm pretty sure you're just naturally an asshole.

That person that you mention was Sanic.EXE and as for the person I'm talking about all see did was post several images on one image gallery cause they were a set and well she felt obligated to post all of them in one setting. But of course some mod thought that she was spamming the site and suspended here and now I have to suffer her wrath cause she feels cheated by them.

She would have been told why she was suspended, and that it's only for 48 hours. If she feels she was wronged in some way, she can contact one of the upper mods like RandomMan, or a staffer like Amanda B. Your Private Message privileges are not revoked in instances of suspension.

Also, please try to be polite to the people who you ask for help. Mods have their own rules that they must follow, along with the rules that pertain to the standard site user. If one of them is telling you they can't do something, it's not because they're being jerks and stonewalling you. They really can't do it.

whoops I didn't mean to come off that way. I guess that thing know as empathy is starting to cloud my typing. I'll try to fix that thanks Crazy Moon Moon.

I moved this to Site-Related.

I just woke up randomly, so I'm going back to sleep, but I'll try to give a proper response later today unless another user gives one that sums up my feelings. I don't want to speak from my tail having not been in on the issue.

Spamming is generally against the rules everywhere you go. Consider it one of the most common laws of internetting that everyone is expected to know. Whether it's advertising or just filling pages with trash; spam will elicit knee-jerk reactions from mods. And boy does KYM get a lot of spam. It should be no surprise that mods quite strict when it comes to clogging up the intertubes

That said, I looked into the banning records for your friend and it looks like she really isn't in that much trouble.

Her suspension expires tomorrow and her uploads are still there, so just wait out the suspend and brush the shoulders off

There's not that many images that I can see there (we get way bigger image dumps than just 7 on a regular basis). So I'm not sure if it was how many images she uploaded that was the problem but rather what those images were. To be sure, check with the mods that issued the suspension

To stay out of trouble in the future, I'd advise against uploading just the hell whatever and focus on quality on-topic images. And double check to make sure they aren't a recent repost

In this case, a reason was listed along with the suspension. It's typical practice to mention the length of the suspension as part of the reason. That wasn't done in this case. This suspension is for 24 hours.

Regarding the larger issue of implicit rule knowledge:

The prominence of the rules as presented on the site has been sporadically discussed amongst the mods for ages. The link to the left of the new post box is actually outdated, for example; here is the actual link.

I would argue that it is fair for mods to suspend users for breaking the rules, no matter what claims they may make about not knowing the rules. The rules here are pretty common-sense: no spam, no porn, no gore, no ads, no autoplay, be nice, etc.

I realize that the definition of things like 'spam' can be rather subjective, and since I wasn't involved with the current case, I can't comment on it. It's generally left up to the mods' discretion to determine what constitutes spam, and as CrazyMoon said, suspended users can still PM people like Amanda if they have questions of if they feel that they weren't spamming.

Given when you made this thread, alongside that it was for spamming, looking into it I'm assuming this user is your sister.

The gallery doesn't show much anymore, so I can't really tell what she apparently spammed. The reason says reaction images. In theory, a bad reason, I agree, folks should be allowed to contribute. But it depends on what she was uploading to the reaction faces gallery. Can you fill me up on that?

Still, for filling up the reaction faces gallery, even if it was spam, and possible bad images, a suspension might've been overkill. But it was just 24 hours, so it's not that much of an offense anyways.

You should get a warming first. No reason to jump straight to suspension.

Warning or instant-suspension is a case-by-case decision. You don't go warn a troll who spams gore 10 minutes after making an account, as he clearly never joined KYM with any other intention.
