Okay, I found this in my car. No idea who it belongs to, asked all my friends that have ever been in my car (not many) and they all say it’s definitely not theirs. I also have no idea how it could have gotten in my car. So KYM, what do?

Yeah, do this.

That once happened to me.

Throw it out. It may have pictures of Naked children, and you don’t want it to go into your computers history.

Plug it in, OP

I’m not plugging it in, I’m not stupid. I know what could be on there, not risking it. What do?

Yes. The table is clean. What do with flash drive?

I would turn it in to police. Could be evidence left by a secret agent holding a secret plan on exploding the moon. You just never know.

It might have a virus.

Dude, what’s the point in keeping the thing if you don’t who it’s from.?

Just plug it in already and see what you find, you might get a name or a company.

Plug it in on a public computer. If it’s a virus, your computer won’t get toasted. If it’s nothing, big happy “yay!” for you.

That is a good idea. If it has naked pictures of children, let the librarian see you looking at them. You might just go on a date in jail with Bubba.

Feb 01, 2013 at 05:02PM EST

I think just looking at the basic contents will let you know what’s inside and who it could belong to. More than likely, it’s perfectly safe.

If you’re really concerned about safety, then plug it into a library computer. If something fishy is in there, then tell whomever gives you trouble about it exactly what happened. All of the evidence will show that you just wanted to figure out who the drive belonged to.

And yes, if you don’t want to bother looking, then turn it into the police like Crimson Locks said. I’m pretty sure they won’t be worried about looking at the contents, and then it’s out of your hands.

Well, if that usb is infected with a virus, first scan it into a computer with antivirus in a public computer

Feb 01, 2013 at 05:13PM EST

This’ll work -

Step 1. Use an antivirus
Step 2. Plug USB into PC
Step 3. (Most antiviruses do this) Scan USB for Viruses
Step 4. Open USB.
Step 5. Upload a screenshot of the files.
Step 6. DO NOT open any files, as they could be extremley bug infested.

I agree with rukario

Secretly plant it somewhere so another person will find it and plug it in.
If it’s a virus, win for you.

Just pretend it’s yours, make up an excuse to plug in a friend’s PC and:
-if nothing happens, tell the truth
- if there’s a virus, RUN.
Or just ignore what I said, rukario has written the best post here.

Well, you advocate what is currently defined as a violation of human rights.
Might be why your computer is tracked.

EDIT: That’s not even Bubba. This Bubba impersonation is just the final straw.

Yes you are because a computer keeping track and saving a copy of everything you view and do would create enormous tax on most systems.

I came onto KYM with intents to create a thread similar to.

It became a thread of people actually trying to help. Either way, I lose.
But yea, I’m going to try and actually figure out what or who’s flash drive it is. I have an old computer locked away, maybe I’ll boot it up sometime soon and try it there.

Question OP, did your vehicle have a previous owner that could have lost it in there?

Feb 02, 2013 at 01:16AM EST

We are not 4chan. We have the entertainment value of grass growing and paint drying.

Plug it in, OP.
Scan for viruses or the like.
Open.
Look at all the stuff in there, mostly folders first.
Make sure there is no inappropriate stuff in there.

Turn it into the police, be a good person.

Just grab a copy of Ubuntu, burn it to a disc, boot from the disc, plug the flash drive in, mount it, check the contents, and done. If it has a virus, no harm done. If not, format it and use it yourself.

I cleaned that car down to nothing when I got it, it couldn’t be from a past owner. I’ll plug it in I guess. Screen shots when I do…if it’s appropriate.

Oh hi guys, sorry I’m late! I just sent each of you a prototype exploding Flash drive! But I hid it somewhere only you know, so don’t plug it in, it’s for emergencies!

Also There are so many little nooks and crannies in a car where something that small could get lost I still wouldn’t be surprised if it belonged to a past owner. Anyways I know you said you asked all of your friends. Could it belong to someone in your family?

Someone could of chucked it out of their car when your window was down, but rather the less, still plug it in and unfold it’s dark secrets. It might teach you how to build robot heavies.

If this shit has kiddie porn on it, I’m going to fucking nuke my computer (pretty much not joking…and I love my laptop) and hand the drive over to the cops. It couldn’t be anyone from my family, I’m the only one in my family that has a flash drive, let alone would carry one around with them.

And I just remembered, I did have this guy in my car not too long ago. Little brother of someone I know, going somewhere with friends and he had to ride with me due to room issues. Might be his, and probably is his. Plugging in, posting screen caps (again, if appropriate) once I’m done.

Okay, better than expected. I looked in the folders labeled images and baby pictures and found pics, some have a title on it that I may be able to look up and find the person who it belongs to. Anyway, here is the screen cap I promised.

Some preliminary searches on the names turned out it was just some sloppy shortened text for the file naming. Can’t find anywhere on the drive it has a name or something with a full name on it. I’m starting to wonder if it is actually from previous owners on my vehicle, just based on the age of the files and such. I know that my vehicle was apparently only owned by adults through its life. If that is true, well I can’t really do anything about it. I’ll keep looking through to see if I can find any metadata on the images or what have you to find a name somewhere, somehow. But even then that may or may not result in any info I can use.

Due to privacy, I don’t think I will. Or at least post anything up anyway. I’ll open them later, I’m on my Mac at the moment with really no way to open or convert the files to something I could open.

Man you just found a Neo-Nazi research/terrorist plan usb. Anonymously turn it in to the police and hide in your basement for a few years so that they stop looking for their lost usb.

Here’s what your gonna do, whoever you are.
>Become a computer
>Stick that shit in your USB drive
>offload all that shit to your Harddrive
>Force files to open up or threaten them with deletion
>Make them tell you who they were made by and who the drive belongs to
>take USB drive out of your anus
>become human again
>deliver drive to rightful owner
It’s that simple
