How many users?

Searching the letter "a" by itself shows 42,394 users but keep in mind there are users who don't have "a" in their username like me and Lopunny ♂ Lv100 above me. I can't imagine it being many more though so somewhere around 50,000 seems right.

Well, you should remember this thread:
https://knowyourmeme.com/forums/site-related/topics/3771-help-seek-out-the-advertising-accounts
I can guess many account were deactivated.

Let's get some SCIENCE up in here.

There used to be a page at https://knowyourmeme.com/users, but sadly that link would be no longer available with the transition from KYM 1.9 to KYM 2.0. We could ask James about the number of users, but you see, we can't do that because that would just be too easy.

So screw page restrictions, we have Wayback Machine, bitches.

Wayback Machine never captures the entire website, so we can only access the first page of the /users page. Because of that, we'll have to assume that 1 is the minimum no. of users per page, and that the total no. users on the site at any time is probably around:

(no. of users on first page)(no. of pages – 1) + .5(no. of users on first page)

KYM was founded on 25-Nov-07, but since KYM was a wiki back then, and not the website it is today, I think Jamie's join date is a more accurate starting point (5 Dec 2008).

In the early 2008-2009 KYM (not counting Rocketboom Wiki days), there were 32 users per page on knowyourmeme.com/users.

For some reason, sometime between May 22, 2009 and Jan 2, 2010, that number changes to 36 per page.

Unfortunately, that's a huge time gap, and there are a lot more users registered in early 2010; nevertheless, here are the captured dates (where t = days from 5 Dec 2008, or t = 0) and their amounts of users:

05 Dec 2008; user = 1; t = 0
20 Jan 2009; users ≈ 80; t= 46
22 Mar 2009; users ≈ 208; t= 107
22 May 2009; users ≈ 688; t= 168
02 Jan 2010; users ≈ 10062; t= 393
24 Apr 2010; users ≈ 16542; t= 505 [Note: this isn't from the Wayback Machine, it's taken from the first post on this thread, and was presumably captured on the same day Watcher posted it]
22 Jul 2010; users ≈ 22302; t= 594
31 Jul 2010; users ≈ 23130; t= 603
31 Aug 2010; users ≈ 25722; t= 634
09 Oct 2010; users ≈ 29250; t= 673
31 Oct 2010; users ≈ 31482; t= 695

Hell yeah, let's graph this! X = days from KYM's creation, and Y = no. of users.

Suddenly Quadratic Regression!

y = .0680525626x^2 – 2.009148393x – 197.3007527

Today is 03 Sep 2011, or t = 1002.

So about 66115 users.

However, that's probably less than the actual amount of users, with the explosion of spambots and users wanting to join in and comment (due to certain new features, such as commenting on videos and images, trending bar, MLP, and a redesigned front page.)

Also, you can see there's a fourfold increase of visitors to the website in the last five months or so according to Quantcast:

So let's say that KYM continues the model I had before until April 1 of 2011 (t = 847), but for the remainder of the time, we arbitrarily (but not unreasonably) multiply the model by 2.25 (not by 4, because increase in traffic doesn't vary directly with registration)

Δy = 2.25(.0680525626x^2 – 2.009148393x – 197.3007527) | 847 < t <= 1002
+
y = .0680525626x^2 – 2.009148393x – 197.3007527 | 0 < t <= 847

46922 + 43182 = 90104

So, uh, probably anywhere between 66115 and 90104 users.

Stay in school, kids.

Interesting…

I found a much easier way to do it.

Kinda cheap, and sorta makes my calculations before useless, but it works.

https://knowyourmeme.com/users/1 = Jamie Dubs.

https://knowyourmeme.com/users/6 = Yatta

etc.

So, yea after doing a hot/cold guessing game, our newest user as of 11:29 PM CT, September 3rd, 2011, is this guy, user 79551.

There are some users included in that number who: registered, but never confirmed their email, or who were deactivated.

But my previous calculations of min = 66115 users and max = 90104 users- average out to 78109.5, so I was pretty darn close with a percent error of only 1.81%

Totally worth it :o

Wanna know your KYM number? Here's how:

1. Go to your profile, right click on your profile frame (see pic), choose View Page Source.

2. Copy/Paste the source code into notepad, word, etc. and Ctrl+F (Find) the string "User.ProfileId". The number next to it is your KYM number (or join number AJ, which means After Jamie).

3. Let's see some GET's !!!

Mine is 29145. What a boring number ಠ_ಠ .

25399 is mine.

Searching by number is an interesting way to find advertising accounts as they all seem to register in 5-10s at each time. Unfortunately it looks like user 9001 is a spam bot.

Nice dubs!

I am user 22014

Well, I guess I am Older than Kalmo. xD

Another intresting thing is I can see the User Number of every member who has given or taken Karma away from me on line 80 and 81, respectively.

I'm 28902
Turning that into letters makes it BHI0B (I left 0 as it is because what the heck am I supposed to put there?)
That would make -
- Hiroman (29145) BIADE – So close to Blade….
- Efrain (43984) DCIHD
- Suiseiseki (25399) BECII
- Aristocatification (75363) GECFI
- Olivia G (946) IDF – Israeli Defense Forces?
- Taryn (680) FH0
- Witch-King of Cats (62206) FBB0B
- DrPepperFan (22969) BBIFI
- Tomberry (1216) ABAF
- Kalmo (23962) BCIFB
- Natsuru Springfield (22014) BBOAD

Well that was fun.
