KYM Titles And Functions Explained

Every now and then I see a user wondering about his/her title. Sometimes what it means, other times how he/she got it. So here's a thread explaining all of the titles and how they are gained.

Regular Titles: These are the titles that every normal user gets. These titles are based upon your contributions to the site and there are different titles for every type of contribution. These titles don't share anything special related to the user and are gained when certain requirements have been met. If you create a new account you start out without a title; in the past new users were given Brand New Member, but this had to move to allow a seperate title system.

Entry Contributions

  • Sleuth: 2 Entries and 20 Edits
  • Jr. Researcher: 5 Entries and 50 Edits
  • Investigator: 10 Entries and 100 Edits
  • Researcher: 15 Entries and 150 Edits
  • Sr. Researcher: 30 Entries and 300 Edits
  • Digital Archaeologist: 60 Entries and 600 Edits

Forum/Comment Contributions

  • Commentator: 100 Comments and Forum Posts
  • Conversationalist: 500 Comments and Forum Posts
  • Pundit: 1000 Comments and Forum Posts
  • Orator: 5000 Comments and Forum Posts
  • Elocutionist: 10,000 Comments and Forum Posts

Media Contributions

  • Collector: 100 Images and Videos
  • Cataloger: 500 Images and Videos
  • Archivist: 1000 Images and Videos
  • Curator: 2500 Images and Videos
  • Treasurer: 5000 Images and Videos

Media Edit titles are available after uploading 100 images and becoming a Scrapbooker. It grants access to the "Admin Area" (found on the front page) and the power to edit all images on the site, allowing Scrapbookers to add tags and sources.

Media Edits

  • Scrapbooker: Default
  • Media Bus Boy: 100 Media Edits
  • Photo Chauffeur: 500 Media Edits
  • Collection Butler: 1,000 Media Edits
  • Gallery Housekeeper: 2,500 Media Edits
  • Media Maid: 5,000 Media Edits

[Complete post is above the 5000 character limit, so I have to split it up.]

Moderator Titles: Moderator titles are given to users by the staff. Moderators also get special priveleges over regular members. As for how you obtain these titles, they are assigned by the staff to the users who’ve shown that they can effectively utilize the abilities to manage the various sections of the site.

Moderators can get multiple moderator powers, the title they receive is related to that. I'll only explain the powers regular members don't have compared to the moderators. Also see this thread for more information.

  • Entry Moderator: For moderators with entry powers. Entry Moderators are able to start editing every entry they want and can add others without becoming an editor themselves. Entry Moderators can also change the status of an entry (deadpool/submission/confirm/hidden) and make an entry a sub-entry of its parent entry. They can also flag an entry or lock/unlock the comments, images and/or videos.
  • Forum Moderator: For moderators with forum powers. Forum Moderators can lock/unlock and delete threads. They can also change every forum post they want, regardless of when it was posted. They can sticky or feature threads as well, which prevents a thread from getting auto-locked.
  • Media Moderator: For moderators with media power. Media Moderators handle the media on the site. They can edit, move or delete every piece of media posted, along with flagging it NSFW or Spoiler, this can be for various reasons (porn, gore, unrelated, dead link, double post, etc).
    • (Scrapbooker: Scrapbooker is a semi-mod power auto-given at 100 image uploads. It allows the user to edit any image, allowing them to add tags and sourcing it. Scrapbookers can also Spoiler and NSFW tag any image. Scrapbookers don't have access to videos.)
  • Sr. Entry Moderator: For moderators with entry & media powers.
  • Sr. Forum Moderator: For moderators with media & forum powers.
  • Research Moderator: For moderators with entry & forum powers.
  • Database Moderator: For moderators with entry, forum, and media powers.

Moderators also have to take action when the site rules have been broken.

As for suspending/banning users, only moderators with multiple moderator powers are able to do this, although there are a few individual exceptions. Suspensions are temporary and editable, bans are permanent.

Custom Titles: Custom Titles are the unique titles that some users have. These can only be handed out by the staff. Don't start spamming them now, as custom titles are only given on special occasions. Custom Titles don't say what an user's moderator powers are, therefore they're commonly placed behind the moderator status in case a mod has it.

I hope this answers most questions about the titles. I don't have all things filled in, nor am I certain of every part. If something in this thread might need to be changed, please correct me. I'll then ask a Forum Moderator to change it. If you have any questions, feel free to ask them.

Question. Will the priorities of the titles determine your title or is it the latest title that you reached?
For example, I uploaded 168 images, which makes me a Collector. According to the chart, 100 Edits make a Sr. Researcher, which means I would've become one, if it was using priorities.

If it was using time frames (i.e. I reached Sr. Researcher before I got Collector) then it will make sense, but I think that's not the case.

Help?

Hmmm, seem to have done something wrong there, better be changed. Sr Researcher probably belongs between Commentator and Researcher, or I got the numbers wrong by mistake. I'll keep you updated. I actually should have seen that fault. My edits were above 800 before I became an Entry Moderator, yet I still was a Collector.

As for your question. The priorities decide your title. So if you would delete 69 (lol) of your images, it would change you into a Sr. Researcher. Also, if you would become a Collector after you became a Conversationalist. You'll stay a Conversationalist, as this has a higher priority.

And before questions start coming: Yes, deleting media and/or comments untill they're below one of the requirements will change your title back.

In all honesty, most titles don't mean anything special.
Just something to keep in mind for the curious.

It's better than just having almost 4 different titles.

Nice list RandomMan. This is the first clear list that accurately describes the titles. I'd love to see a list of all the users with custom titles. Actually I'll start one: I'm sure I'm missing a few so fill me in if I am.

Users With Custom Titles:
Olivia G – Original Gangster
Mike – Internet Scientist
Yatta – Internet Scientist
Jamie Dubs – Scientist Emeritus
Chirs Menning – Research Advisor & Early Adopter (#8)
Brad – Community Manager
Captain Blubber – Database Moderator & Tikibar Management
Don – Staff Member & Administrator

I'll add some to your list:

Forest – Internet Scientist
Tomberry – Pony Hater
mona_jpn – Japanese Specialist
Doc – Pony Hater for a short while, currently not.

Also in both Tomberry and Doc's case the Pony Hater was put behind their original title, but the complete thing was a custom title. Making "Moderator Title & Pony Hater" the custom title.

Olivia G had different custom titles over time, as had some other users. So the list might need some updates every now and then.

I'm saying it because a lot of new people have assumed that these titles come with special privileges. I was making a simple basic explanation that the majority of titles don't mean anything significant.

Stop thumbing me down because you don't like my explanations.

Yes, it seems to have updated.

His images are exactly 500 now, but I remember his title also being Archivist when the images were still in the 400. So it seems videos and images also add up now.

pug on toast wrote:

Really? In that case I should already have become and Archivist already……

I still don't get how this works.

I think because you have more comments and forum posts in sum than images and videos in sum, Conversationalist takes precedence over Archivist.

Teh Brawler wrote:

Um.

I hate to bump this now, but I'm a collecter now, when I used to be a commentator, and I haven't hit 100 in either media category. Also, I've more comments than anything.

As you can see, you have 49 images and 51 videos. Together making 100 media uploads, which makes you a Collector. This has apparently updated and media contributions now add up, as was already shown in a few posts above.

As is shown in the first post, Collector has a higher priority than Commentator. The numbers don't matter in these cases.

When your comments reach 1000 you should become a Conversationalist, as that has a higher priority than Collector.

Then whats higher than a Conversationalist?

Sorry, but I noticed a flaw in the original post. Sr. Researcher can't be that high on the list, because I have 166 edits, and I'm a collector. I'm not complaining, I'm just pointing it out.

Actually, I'm having the same problem as well. Like Teh Brawler said, I'm not complaining, but it should be looked into.

100 edits, no Sr. Researcher title awarded.
I second this request.

Good thing it's not only me and Brawler. Now this can be looked into.

Regarding Entry contributions, we have to kick out rude OP continuing meaningless edits. Unless we do so, they could get senior titles without real contributions.

It's too late for that. There are already users who have 100 entries and got Resident Researcher, but 75% of their submissions are deadpooled or flagrantly not memes.

Deadpools don't add up to possible entry related titles, so they won't get them from those.

@MDF

Care to give me some examples?

So, can we revoke OP's editorship when we revive entries which are deadpooled by OP's rudeness?

Anyway, Probably all of good entry contributors is already moderator or higher. This is not a serious matter in actually:)

If someone is vandalizing an entry, feel free to remove them from the editors or hide the entry. If they continue to do so, they may warrant a ban.

If they're just randomly saving a deadpooled entry, let them waste their time, it's not like they get a higher title. Or do one of the above mentioned consequenses, free call. We can't turn entries into a playground, deadpool or not.

Got it. Next time, I'm going to leave zombies clinging to them in the cemetery when I revive some entries from deadpool.

Thanks, Nic Cage.

How long does it take for titles to update? I currently have about 73 images and 111 videos, which should make me a collector, but I'm still a commentator. Of course, I just reached these requirements today. Should I expect to be a collector by the end of the day?

It seems like you already have the "Collector" title. It doesn't take that long for titles to update.

I've made enough posts now to be higher than Brand New Member, but my title is still stuck there.

Takes some time to update, no need to rush it.

I figured that this was better suited to here than to the Suggestions thread, because it relates to this specific topic:

Why not have titles accumulate, so that a user can choose which one they want to display? Let’s say that they make 1,000 forum posts and upload 500 images. This gives eligibility for both the Archivist and Conversationalist title, and they could choose which one they want to display. I think that it would be nice if I had the option to either be known as a Collector or a Sr. Researcher, and scenarios the like of that, no?

Basically immediately after I joined the site, after I had made about 3 forum posts, I already had the title “Member.” Was this just a server error or something?

As for the suggestion, I think that would be a good idea, but it would have to be taken up with James. For the title change, the figures up top for criteria aren't definite; this is more true for the "Member" title, since it requires barely any contributions in the first place.

Rukario wrote:

Question, can you be a "Archivist & Conversationalist?"

No, you can only have one automatically given title at a time. Double titles need to be done through custom titles, and with that lose their automatic updating.

I apologize for bumping the this thread, but I've been informed that 600 comments and 600 forum posts is enough to make me a Conversationalist. I haven't seem to have the slightest on why it is bugging out for me, but I know that it should be my newest title.

Did the factor adding get removed? Is it only not working for me? I do not know. I just know that it should be enough, the factors. I don't care if that I am not receiving the title, but I am concerned about why it is not arriving.
