Resurrecting the Cringeworthy gallery

Before I begin, forgive me if a similar post was made recently. But even then, hear me out.

I understand why the gallery was locked in the first place, with the spamming of shitposts by numerous people (don’t worry, I wasn’t one of them). The mods got tired of it and decided to throw it into Davy Jones’ Locker, I get it. But I don’t think its fair for the people who posted legitimate items in the gallery and supported it, or the people like me who got their shits & gigs from it. Honestly, don’t you think its time to bring it back up on the map? Sure, either people learned their lesson or will continue to shitpost, but at least it would still be there, and isn’t that at least something? If it really bothers you that much (pointing at the mods), then at least let me have power to help regulate it if it means bringing it back up. I wouldn’t mind it at all, and it would make me feel a lot more useful here then just some commentator…

Now seriously.

The gallery was locked due the misuse and abuse of users who didn’t know the difference between what is cringeworthy and what not. Now I’m going to be a pessimist asshole and say:

People DON’T change.

If you want to discuss or talk about cringeworthy things is far more easy (and for everyone’s sake) to use the cringeworthy thread.

Image galleries are extensions of an entry, which means the documentation of a potential meme/fad/event/etc, not a place to hang out and post shit. Use the forums for that (or not).

then at least let me have power to help regulate it if it means bringing it back up. I wouldn’t mind it at all, and it would make me feel a lot more useful here then just some commentator…

Yeah, get in the line. You aren’t the only one.

Like I said before, I know people were spamming the gallery because the definition of cringeworthy, sort of, wore off. But I do believe people can change if they really just get up and do it; the mods already gave their punishment, but I think that there is an absence of knowledge on why it was. If it were to come back and have some sort of “label” put on about what is and what is not, then they might get the damn idea. Also, I heard that the cringeworthy thread was locked for some time (don’t know if that’s true or not) so it can’t be simply avoided by just banning the images; it would need to be confronted directly.

Now for the images being “extensions”, its basically the meat and potatoes of a lot of entries, including cringeworthy. Without images, we wouldn’t be able to have our “cringe” from it, and then there wouldn’t be any point.

And about the “job” part, get on my level. I bought an express ticket for this ride so I can skip everyone else.

But seriously, does the spamming really hurt anybody? I guess it would make since if every image had to go through the mods’ inbox, but still. And like I said before, I wouldn’t mind handling the shitstorm if they’re tired of it.

Hi, I handled a lot of the issues with the cringeworthy gallery and spearheaded the decision to lock it indefinitely. I know I’m a forum moderator, but I spend a lot of time on the IRC and a huge amount of complaints were heard there, so I spent a lot of my time during the two weeks where we focused on that gallery solving issues and offering solutions, so I’m one of the more knowledgeable mods on the subject.

You see, we’d already tried multiple solutions over the course of those few weeks. We locked it temporarily and cleaned it, we gave verbal warnings in the comments. You mention addressing specific people, we did just that, warning and even suspending prevalent troublemakers. Trust me, there was plenty of attention pulled to rules that should be followed and they were not followed at all.

There’s a good reason for the issues we have – it’s such a subjective topic. I’ve already written on this before:

The issue with the gallery at the moment is that it should follow site content rules but generally does not. Things like gore and personal attacks are not allowed, but are currently daily occurrences in the gallery. In addition, the topic of “cringeworthy” is extremely subjective, leading to User A feeling that harmless topic X is crigeworthy, offending User B who enjoys topic X, causing large amounts of drama and fighting. Unfortunately, this also makes enforcement of a common theme a touchy subject, as everyone’s definition of “cringe material” is different, mods and regular users alike. One thing I’ve brought up in this discussion is that perhaps the users in question do consider gore and body horror to be simply “cringe”, and are unaware of the site’s NSFW guidelines.

We brought up those guidelines after the temp lock, and abuse continued.

Trust me, I was in your boat. I thought people could change. You’ll see in most of my posts on the subject that I’m very disappointed that was the route we had to take. The issue is most of moderation was sick and tired of dealing with the gallery and all of our attempts to fix it failed, so we took the nuclear route.

On the subject of moderation – We have people to handle image abuse, they’re called media moderators. Having someone to just deal with the gallery is unnecessary, especially since basically every single media mod was focused on the cringeworthy gallery during those two weeks and they still couldn’t handle it. (One thing to note – when the MLP gallery went through a similar debacle with dupes and rule abuse, we notably could get people to cooperate and we only needed existing moderation to correct the problem. This gallery has been significantly less cooperative.) We have talked about adding new media mods, but we also have potential candidates picked out already. Just trying to ask for it won’t get you anywhere.

And as for the spam thing, yes, that is a problem. The original purpose of image galleries was to be for notable examples, not as a dumping ground for picture spam. I even have precedent for you, just to validate my claim – the MLP gallery crisis I mentioned above, where a major reason for it was a large number of users simply dumping every image they could get their hand on.

So if you’re going to negotiate for the gallery’s unlocking, get in line. You aren’t the first, you probably won’t be the last. We’ll unlock it if we feel that it needs to be unlocked at all, and even then only when we feel that we can trust the userbase not to abuse it.

As the guy who locked the gallery, I disagree with reopening it. We locked it for a reason, and we didn’t take the decision lightly. What’s to say that everyone won’t just abuse it again once it’s open? We tried, but the other users did not, so locked it shall remain

Man, I hate it when people deactivate their accounts because they made a derp. OP, it’s save, we don’t hate you, and deactivating your account only kills possible future discussion.

You can make a new account and send me a PM with that one if you want it reactivated.

Now for the matter at hand, there of course IS a slight possibility it will be unlocked. But again, it’s very slight, so don’t bet on it on the short run. The mods above already explained most of it. But basically, you’d need guidelines and some more Media Mods to take up the job (and no, you’re not really a candidate for modship OP).

For now, no. However, if a lot, (a LOT lot) of time passes and the demand for Cringeworthy to be put back into place exceeds the hate for it and the mods forgot about the horrors it caused, it could be resurrected. However, that is ridiculously unlikely to happen in the near future as you would want OP. (If you’re even reading anymore)

No man, i don’t want my brain scar to be bigger…

-1 unlocking of the cringeworthy general

Give it a good 1 to 4 years before you see that shiner back.

Chances are, people will either forget about why we locked it in the future, unlock it, or some amazingly rare occurence where a mod actually unlocks it because they think shit won’t happen again (which it will.)
