Best practices for NSFW material

Hi people.

As you may already know, KYM, even though we want to deal with all kind of Internet memes, wants to remain as family friendly as possible.

That’s why we can’t allow very NSFW material to be publicly posted on the website as a logical result.

Nevertheless, the proofs of a meme’s expansion and spread are translated, in an entry, by pictures, videos and links posted about it, and many internet websites hosting those memes can contain explicit material, being sexual, gore, or something to that extend.

This topic is meant to help people deal with the issue of the NSFW content which have to be filtered here.

Here is how :

- Concerning links and hyperlinks. As you must have noticed, we don’t strictly forbid links to chans archives or places where porn/NSFW ads can exist. But, we greatly invite you to, at least, add a warning before the said link, in order to indicate what can be NSFW or not.

- Concerning photos and pictures. We, obviously, can’t authorize too explicit pictures, so we encourage you to edit them in order to show where the meme can lie down, especially when you are taking a screenshot from a website.
Like this, for example :

When it comes to posting the picture in the entry directly, as an illustration, we also encourage you to, if the picture may be too much NSFW (see goatse for instance), describe it with words in order to make the reader understand where the memetic content can be.

- Concerning videos and animated material, it’s basically the same thing as above. If the video isn’t too much NSFW, we encourage you to add a little warning before it, just in case. If the video or the animation is too explicit, we encourage you to describe it with words.

- Finally, we invite you to not hold yourself in using and abusing of the NSFW tag. It’s here for that purpose.

I have another question, I’ve recently seen the Fuck That Guy/Dumb Bitch being used to hide NSFW material on the website.

Is it like a new kind of censor or something?

Thanks for the bump, that reminded me, I realized that my “Don’t display NSFW” option is selected, but it doesn’t work (it worked before, displying a messege saying “This entry is NSFW, do you still wish to proceed?” or something like this).

Are we allowed to link to sites who’s purpose is R34, if we give proper warning beforehand?

EDIT: In a discussion, on the forums.

Why would you be linking to a pornography site in a meme article anyway?
EDIT: Still no. No pornographic materials on Forums is rule #1

I think that should be fine Connor, as long as you givea major warning next to the link. Like NSFW, porn site or something along those lines. As long as you don’t post the images on the site.

And MDF, some articles link to pornographic sites, like the Rule 63 page.

Hey users, this is in update to Tomberry’s rules specifically in relation to what is allowed in the forums in response to the questions of what is and isn’t allowed lately.

As we try to remain a PG website, we still do not allow the embedding of NSFW images including gore, pornography, rule 34, or heavily obscene content.

Through talking to the other moderators and administrators, the consensus seems to be that NSFW links will be allowed on a case by case basis, as long as they are relevant to the thread at hand and labelled with a NSFW tag immediately before, after, or contained in the name given to the link.

Remember, Moderators and Administrators have the final say on each link posted and can remove any link with impunity and without justification.

If any linking to NSFW sites gets out of hand, the linking will be restricted again.

If any individual clicks a NSFW link, it is their own responsibility for their actions, not Know Your Meme’s.

Remember, the link must be relevant, so just posting links to pornography or gore will get your post deleted and a possible banhammer brought down upon your head.

(Post is what the general consensus of the mods and admins have said, isn’t necessarily policy and is subject to whatever change the Admins want of it)

That pretty much ruined my childhood, But I can’t blame you. I knew about that before this. Now I can’t sleep at night.

Hmm, I always hesitate to suggest something that might be more of a coding challenge than it’s worth, but…

Would it be possible to create a NSFW link style with an appropriate script that warns the clicker they are going to NSFW content? I know Facebook has some sort of thing like that, or at least they used to.

We should have pop-up messages for NSFW that pop-up the same as if you try to delete your post. (go ahead and make a post and delete it and you’ll see what i’m talking about.)

I agree with Tomberry. but with so much NSFW content (especially gore) around the internet, it’s hard to keep the site family-friendly. maybe disallowing links to NSFW content would be a good idea. or maybe not displaying NSFW entries while not being signed up.

As far as entries go, we sometimes have to have links to NSFW websites and content, depending on what the meme is about and where it has spread. If it is a SFW tagged entry, we usually have a warning next to links that could be NSFW.

And as long as there is a warning on entries that are NSFW (for example, if you don’t have an account or you haven’t gone into NSFW pages before it tells you that the entry is not safe for work and asks you if you want to proceed, putting the responsibility on the user, not on the website) then it should be fine, the same applies to links in the forums.

As you labelled it as NSFW, it would be an okay way to post in the forums.

Just remember that if you do link something that is NSFW, it has to be relevant to the thread and it is up to any moderator’s discretion as to whether it gets removed or not.

As a note, this is how you create that button.

<div class="spoiler" title="NSFW"> [Your text/image/whatever here] </div>

Just copy and paste the code and replace “[Your text here]” by what you want to button to say before it is pressed. The result will become the following:

boobies

Great way of dealing with the problem guys!
I’m also very surprised by Sweatie’s clever initiative and I heavily approve of it!

+1 Sweatie and Pimp Abra.
