I went to write "Hi!" on someone's board and got an error message "Your comment must be between 4 and over9000 (not really) characters long." Why? Why 4 characters???

Guess they figure that if your message can't be expressed in more than 3 characters, it's not worth saying.
That said, if you really want to buck the system and show them who's boss, you might consider adding a 2nd exclamation mark. That would bring your message up to 4 characters, appease the tyrants, and yet subtly maintain your rebellion against their rules
Solution: Just say hello.
or you could add spaces, as I will demonstrate in the comment below.
But it was probably made to limit the amount of useless comments, although if most < 4 character comments are something as simple as"hi!" the 4 character limit might not be that useful…
