Also disabling temporary email services should come in handy

This is another good suggestion, many forums completely ban any registration that uses a free/disposable email service. As you can see in the spam demo that I posted, this successfully thwarted the spam software from continuing unless the spammer uses a non-disposable email service.

For instance, don’t allow anything from mail.ru. That’s apparently a domain exclusively used by spam software

Small Suggestion: Deadpool Message

This entry has been rejected due to incompleteness or lack of notability.
To dispute this DEADPOOL flagging, please provide suggestionsfor how this entry can be improved, or request editorshipto help maintain this entry.

(Example)

Need a space between “suggestion” & “for” and “editorship” & “to”.

Edit
Additional Suggestion: blockquote style

Nomal blockquotes;

.bodycopy blockquote {margin: 4px 0 8px 16px}
.bodycopy.moderate blockquote {padding: 0 0 6px 0}

blockquotes when we use “Quote” button:

#posts_list .forum_post .quote blockquote {

Titles for recieving and giving karma
Mark videos as NSFW
A “Disturbing” tag for certain entries(similar to the NSFW tags and Deadpool tags)
When a meme is confirmed, it will get a tag(also like NSFW tags)
More titles
Gif tag for images banned

Confirmed entries already get a “confirmed” tag bro. What kind of tag are you talking about?

Is your suggestion “disabling gif tags”? I hate this tag system of KYM already. The main problem is not just “gif” tags. Whole tags and their unrelated suggestions (or more pony suggestions). Admins really should do something about it.

How about a KYM app? I’d allow for more streamlined commenting and viewing of forums, entries, and galleries on mobile devices.

A mobile site would be better for those of us who don’t have the space for apps due to the amount of music we may have on our ipods or iphones.

You get 75% positive karma, you get a title. Same with negative ones

It’s like the banner-like yellow thingy on a NSFW entry or a red one for Deadpooled ones.

Titles for getting followers, following people and friending people.

I’m sure you’ve all seen the images that appear on the log-in screen, each of which refers to a meme or a set of memes, and which cycle through each time you visit the site. We should set it up so that, if you click on the image, it will take you to the relevant page on the site, or, in the case of pages which refer to more than one meme, a list of memes to select from. Some of them have gotten kind of old, and newer users may not get the joke. Having them link would be a simple fix.

Suggestion for Tag Link

As of now, links in tags section in entries are linking to results of “keyword” search for the word(s) like this:

(eg. Photo Fad)

http://knowyourmeme.com/search?context=entries&q=%22photo+fad%22&sort=popular

It would be better to change to jump to the results for “tag” search like this:
http://knowyourmeme.com/search?context=entries&sort=relevance&q=tags%3A%28%22photo+fad%22%29

Suggestion for Random Entry button:

Remove Deadpool’d articles from being accessed via the “Random Entry” button, or if possible, reduce the frequency at which they appear. Out of the 10 times I clicked on the Random button, 7 of the entries were Deadpool’d, most of them for being the typical BNM entry (one picture, one paragraph, etc.). Seven. Out of ten. That’s as much as 70% and that’s terrible.

I suggest improvements to the friends list, if it hasn’t already been mentioned.

In its current state, it’s rather clumsy and impractical, with users randomly thrown into a hodgepodge with no discernible order that I can perceive.

Being able to at the very least sort the users would be a huge boon to anyone with a sizable friends list.

It lists them by the date they joined. On your profile, it’s oldest first, but when you click View All, it’s newest first.

A year or so back it was suggested to allow a Multi-image uploader, but was deemed impractical as a spamming device.

But then I noticed Imgur’s system, where the uploads only happen one at a time, and multiple images can be deleted straight from your stream.

Perhaps giving the Image Mods the multi-delete tool might balance out a multi-upload tool?

WE kind of already have a multi-delete tool. When perma-banning users, we can check a box to delete all of their images videos and comments, basically wiping their existence from the site. It’s mostly used against spammers and troll accounts, though for anything requiring more finesse we have to go through one at a time.

Moving aside the Multi-image uploader, I think it would be useful to give us some sort of combination upload option, like the photosets on Tumblr. Comics and stuff that need multiple images to succesfully show the joke can then be upload at once, instead of the need to photoshop them together. And unlike a multi-image uploader which can be used for spam (which is a somewhat lame reason tbh), the multiple images uploaded in a photoset can be removed at once, requiring no added work to remove them.

Downside is that I have no clue how to make that function in combination with both the image gallery (like make it switch between the images every 2 seconds?) and the embed codes we provide on image pages.

Might I reiterate the old suggestion that we introduce a “spoilers” tag to go along with the NSFW one. Usually it’s been proposed in relation to the MLP board, but there has been an influx of spoilery images for Attack on titan recently, and there will probably be many more once a lot of the major shows currently on hiatus kick back in again (Doctor Who and Sherlock especially). It would make life a lot easier.

Suggestion: “NSFW” indication for text links to mature contents in internal/external pages

We sometimes have to make text links from SFW articles to other NSFW articles/images on KYM, or add external pages including adult contents or advertisements to the “external references” section. As of now, each editors add the indication by their own ways in cases of the external references section. But there is no solution for links in texts. So, it may be a good way to prepare a common style for displaying NSFW indication for links, and put a class attribute into them like this:

Codes:

html: <a href="http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/subcultures/online-pornography" class="nsfw">Online Pornography</a>
Textile: "(nsfw)Online Pornography":/memes/subcultures/online-pornography

a.nsfw:after {
content: “(NSFW!)”;
font-size: 10px;
font-weight: bold;
vertical-align: super;
color: red;
padding-left: 2px;
}

I meant so you would have an option to see the NSFW picture DIRECTLY instead of a warning thumbnail so you at least have an indication what you’re going to see when you click on the image.

  • url link before footnote link

Since “[” is a reserved character for URI, we have to give a space to put footnotes after textile links. But no space is needed when we use the normal mark-up.

OK: word [42]

This guy pretty much said what I came here for.

I was very surprised to learn that there’s no option in the settings or something to turn off the NSFW warning on NSFW images and have them display their regular thumbnails instead. If I don’t have a problem with NSFW, then why shouldn’t I be able to turn that off for myself?

I think the submission Do’s and Dont’s need a slight update:

DOs
DO check the database for possible duplicate entries before starting an entry. If an entry already exists, your entry will be marked invalid.
DO explain clearly what the meme is, who, when, where and how it was started, where it has spread to and when applicable, how it has changed over time.
DO provide related statistics and analytics data, such as keyword search volume, reblog counts and view counts.
DO cite your sources by providing hyperlinks to relevant external websites at the bottom of the entry.
DO write your entry like Party Hard.

DON’Ts
DO NOT create an entry for the sake of launching your original creation.
DO NOT write in the first-person perspective or editorialized opinions.
DO NOT use hyperbolic statements, ex: “the latest, bestest, awesomest meme OMG!”
DO NOT write your entry like Super Robo Jesus.

For more suggestions on formatting, heading and styling, read the KYMdb Style Guide.
For more suggestions on entry categorization, refer to the KYMdb Categories.
For more information on the Meme Database, read the Frequently Asked Questions.

Most of it is fine, but Party Hard is hardly the best article we have now. (It even has a W.I.P. tag on it right now.) I’d suggest the MLP article since it is probably the best we have, but most people won’t go spend time on the MLP article studying it and it took MANY man hours to get the MLP article the way it is. I wouldn’t even suggest we replace it with Forever Alone because that one is fairly long. Mr. Bone’s Wild Ride however is a fine article and would probably be a much better reference for new users.

I’ve noticed that each thumbnails for entries is generated in different ways.

“Original”
http://i3.kym-cdn.com/entries/icons/original/000/015/060/fake_chef_pranks_tv_station.jpg

“Medium” Clipping the original from the middle-center to square and resizing to 200×200 pixels.
http://i1.kym-cdn.com/entries/icons/medium/000/015/060/fake_chef_pranks_tv_station.jpg

“Square” Just resizing the original to 100×100 pixels
http://i3.kym-cdn.com/entries/icons/square/000/015/060/fake_chef_pranks_tv_station.jpg

“Newsfeed” Resizing the original to 200×150 pixels (4:3 ratio)
http://i3.kym-cdn.com/entries/icons/newsfeed/000/015/060/fake_chef_pranks_tv_station.jpg

It’s a bit weird. At least, “medium” and “square” should be generated in the same method.

Since no improvements is done, I’d like to say this again: Stop using <br> for every <center> elements!

KYMdb Style Guide orders us using <br> before/after all of <center> elements for spacing. If you have learned about HTML, You would know it’s the worst usage of <br>.

<br> is the tag prepared for text writings, it’s never for layouts. When spaces requires before/after elements, all you have to do is to add padding or margin status for the elements by style sheets.

It’s the worst way to put inappropriate tag manually for every time. Please do not force users to spend their time to such a unnecessary work.

Change style sheets, then erase <br>s before <center> and after </center> by batch. Just by these 2 steps, this KYM’s shameful writing manner will be solved.

Suggestion: suggesting entries by alternative words in the top right search menu

KYM’s top right search menu only suggests entries which titles include input words exactly. So, it’s inconvenient in these cases.

  • Subculture topics having both English Titles / Original Language Titles (eg. Squid Girl / Shinryaku! Ika Musume, etc…)

The easiest solution is just including all words in titles. But it tends to make titles too long. Besides, too long URLs, especially including encoded non-alphabetical characters, are bit annoying when embedding links and images in articles.

More smarter solution is launching auto-redirecting pages of alternative titles like wikipedia.

eg. /memes/subcultures/mmd > /memes/subcultures/miku-miku-dance

Auto redirecting page is also good to SEO for original non-alphabetical languages (Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Arabic, Thai, Russian, etc…)

Of course, I know it needs one more effort not to display auto redirecting entries in the submission list. But I’m sure this must improve the accessibility of articles.

I’d like to give an incredibly nessecsary and helpful feature- a mobile site/app. Whenever I go on this site on my Android, the ads are always glitching out and the layout makes it hard to maneuver through. This is something a mobile site could easily fix, or could be even better as a mobile app. The only problem is that there is already an app called Know Your Meme on the Google Play Store, but this can easily be gone around by adding some other text. Thank you for your consideration.

Apr 06, 2014 at 07:50PM EDT

I’ve been feeling strongly uncomfortable against some of text links that link to a subculture article for series despite of the texts showing its specific title.

For example, some of editors make a link to Final Fantasy’s article from a line describing Final Fantasy VII like this:

if I describes about Final Fantasy VII, I would write like this.

  • Final Fantasy VII (exactly matched characters only)
    or
  • Final Fantasy VII, the 7th installment in the Final Fantasy series. (this writing style is usually seen in Wikipedia)

Not jumping to articles that are expected from its texts is quite strange.

I second this. Though I rarely have the problem, I always see somebody saying they “accidentally hit dislike” or something similar.

Also what I can here to post:

Can we have submitted images/videos to have a minimum number of tags? How about 3? I know some people are starting to go crazy over folks not tagging their images, and I think this would go a long way towards it. It’s not foolproof, but it might get people to stop and think for a moment. (Which is a scary proposition for most, I know.)

>Can we have submitted images/videos to have a minimum number of tags? How about 3?

How about 1? I’d hate to have an imaged that needed uploading but I couldn’t think of three useful tags.

Also, do images have an auto-tag built in? An by that I mean if I upload a gif to the “gif” entry, or a cat pic to the “cats” entry, does it automatically tag it “gif” or “cat” when people image search by those terms?

While I’m at it, this thread got locked before I could respond to anything. I suppose that’s for the better since it got way off the beaten track. Let me quote my semi-stolen, yet modified badge idea:

Achievement Badges: This should be implemented because not everyone who is a Forum/Comment user has edited articles or uploaded images, yet we all are given the same title sometimes. Some just do one of those areas, while others do 2 or 3. After that, it could work on a tier system.

Obviously we have the contributions chart, but I would like to see what other titles I have achieved since you can only have one title and can’t choose between them.

E.g.

Bronze = Lurker/Memeber / Jr. Researcher / Collector
Silver = Researcher / Scrapbooker / Gold Member
Gold = Commentator / Collector / Sr. Researcher
Diamond = Conversationalist / Research Advisor/Resident Researcher

Then we could work from there. (e.g. FiM badge for making friends, badge for residency, badge for karma)

Sounds like a lot of work right? Well most of the elements are already in place. For example:

Obviously the code for badges exist right now otherwise select users wouldn’t have them. And the script for title updates already exist. How hard could it be to add a little script and what not to link a badge to a profile each time a title is earned?

I probably oversimplified the complexity of it, but I know personally I’d like to see “Researcher” of some form on my profile somewhere. “Archivist” who become “Conversationalist” probably feel the same…(maybe?)

The entry title and image title are automatically used when searching for the image, but not when searching for tags exclusively. So searching for just “GIF” will deliver all the images tagged “GIF” alongside the entire GIF gallery, while searching for actually “GIF” as a tag will only include images tagged “GIF”.
