[MAJOR WORK IN PROGRESS]
‘+1’ or ‘-1’ is a term used to compliment or criticise another user’s posted content
To show someone’s appreciation or hate to something on either an entry or discussion, they put in the comment a plus or minus symbol, the number one, and an adjective or verb.
“+1 Good” means the content very good.
“-1 Acceptance” means the entry is unnacceptable.
However, this is also used to convey messages other then approval or criticism. For example, +1 work would suggest that the content is salvagable, but far from perfect.
The origin of this phenomenon is uncertain. It became known and use on this site at least by January 2010, but there are numerous suggestions that is predates this by a considerable amout.
A possible origin comes from Youtube, in the comments section of any video (except where comments have been disabled), people can give their opinion of whether they approve or disapprove someone’s comment. Although there is a formalized way to approve or dissaprove through Likes/Dislikes, in the early days of youtube this system was rarely used. If the phenomenon originated there, it would give a positive or a negetive count, depending on the balance of peoples overall opinion. However, ther sites like Newgrounds have used this fomula on their sites before or after Youtube’s introduction to the feature, and thus may have been the origin of the +1/-1 phenomenon.
