“Cala boca Galvão” means “Shut up Galvão” in Portuguese. The phrase became an international trending topic after Galvão Bueno’s remarkable comments about the bands featured in the opening ceremony of the 2010 World Cup (June 11th) in South Africa.

Origins

Carlos Eduardo dos Santos Galvão Bueno, or Galvão Bueno is a well known and notorious sportscaster in Brazil. During the opening ceremony of the 2010 World Cup, Galvão Bueno was criticized on Twitter through the Tweet “Cala Boca Galvão.” The phrase means Shut Up Galvão. The phrase was retweeted seriously and non-serious as well. The phrase itself started to trend on Twitter and the non-Portuguese speaking Twitter world took notice.

Many non-Portuguese speaking Twitterers noticed the message was trending. Several decided to keep the phrase alive and said that “Cala Boca Galvão” was part of a campaign to save the Galvão bird (which is not a real bird). A Twitter campaign was launched claiming that if the phrase “Cala Boca Galvão” was Tweeted, then ten cents would be donated to save the bird. A YouTube video was launched to aid the spread of the hoax.

Another false story created on the topic was that “Cala boca Galvão” was a new single by Lady Gaga.
