Cute Series (Japanese: ○○かわいいシリーズ, Marumaru Kawaii Series) refers to a style of MAD videos that use the song “Linear Slope X Technologic”. It’s a mashup of an electro pop tune “Liner Slope” (線形勾配) by daniwellP, a famous Vocaloid composer also known as the creator of "Nyanyanyanyanyanyanya!", and 2005 hit electro house tune “Technologic” by Daft Punk.
“Linear Slope” was uploaded to both his official website and video sharing services in December 2009. The former is daniwellP’s original instrumental version, but the latter is a mashup version with Daft Punk’s “Technologic”. This mashup version was posted to the Japanese video sharing service Nico Nico Douga on December 13th, 2009, and it was officially reuploaded to YouTube by the creator in 2011 (shown below, left).
Meanwhile, the first instance that introduced this song into MADs is "Onjouji Toki is “sickly” kawaii" (lit. Onjouji Toki is Sicky and Cute) made by NND user Kanban (看板). This video featuring Tok Onjouji, a sickly person in Japanese manga/TV anime Saki, was posted to NND on June 2nd, 2012 (shown below, right).
Other MAD editors quickly began mimicking the style of that Toki Onjouji video partly due to its quite convenient editing style utilizing NND video player’s auto-loop feature. Therefore, it’s considered as a musical resource for novice MAD editors, in a similar vein to on and on or Dangerous Series.
About 100 videos in this series had been uploaded to NND within its first month, and the amount of those videos has been still increasing. And following videos are called with the phrasal template “X is Y Kawaii” (lit. X is Y and Cute).
