About

Did He Died? (alternatively, “Did He Die?”) is a catchphrase generally posted by people attempting to troll in the comment sections of YouTube videos depicting physical injuries or accidents, such as FAIL videos. Although the expression had its beginning as a troll-bait containing a grammatical error, it has been increasingly used in comments without any context, regardless of whether there’s a reason to even question if anyone might have died in the video.

Other variations of the phrase include, “did he dieded” or “did x died,” where X is the subject of the video.

Origin

The first recorded instance of the expression can be found in the comments section of a YouTube anime music video[15] uploaded on November 5th, 2006.

What episode did he died? And when did he cut is hair?
posted 4 years ago by 57682835

Although its exact site of origin or the backstory remains unknown, the phrase became closely associated with comment trolling in FAIL videos on YouTube and Cheezburger's FAILBlog before spreading to other videos on YouTube. The earliest known iteration of "did he died?" in the context of FAIL was posted in July 2007 to a YouTube video of a soccer player getting injured during a game.[7] The phrase was first defined on Urban Dictionary[4] in December 2008.

1. did he died 938 up, 59 dowrn A troll's response to any video where a person is injured Person 1: OMG he hit his nuts on the rail Troll: Did He died? Person 1: stfu you retard buy did he died mugs & shirts troll did he died idiot retard by Jimmyah Dec 31, 2008 share this add a video

Spread

Between May and June, a handful of additional definitions were added to Urban Dictionary[5], each referencing its popular usage in YouTube comments. By 2009, the phrase was used on 4chan[11] and on May 17th of that year, the first Yahoo! Answers question[13] about the fad was posted. Several thousand related questions[14] were submitted to the site over the following three years.

Throughout 2010, several Facebook groups were created for “did he died,” all in relation to FAILBlog, including OMG! Did He Died?[9], FAIL --> “Did He Died??”[10] and The Guy Who Always Comments “DID HE DIED?” on FAILBlog Videos.[8]

As of May 2012, the phrase is still being used as a trolling mechanism on YouTube videos[6] and as a tag on Tumblr.[12]

Meta Videos

In 2009, videos began appearing as self-aware satires of the phrase, with creators using the title in their FAIL videos in anticipation of the comments or in vlog style videos complaining about the commenters who use the phrase. As of May 2012, there are 562 videos with "did he died" in the title.[1]

Search Interest

Since "did he died" is a misspelling of a common phrase, it is hard to accurately gauge the search results in relation to the video comments.

I have the full backstory to this as given to me by a youtube user: Since YouTube exists, there have always been comments by persons we call "Gutmenschen" in German: Whenever someone would slip on a banana peel or something they would seriously go like "OMG HE COULD HAVE DIED HOW CAN YOU LAUGH AT THAT YOU HORRIBLE MONSTER!" Some weeks ago, people started mocking that annoying attitude by asking "Did he die?" in any context, and it spread quickly. It's hilarious when you have experienced the background for ages…

AFAIK, it started on YouTube and not 4chan.

I will say the same thing I said in the thread in the forum about this same phrase:

This isn’t a meme. It can, however, be considered Copypasta.

    oh! oh!
ive seen this so much on youtube!
i love this meme, totally is confirmable, needs better pic tho.

memes need to mutate and this is definately mutating, it started out with the simple "did he die?" which was the legit question then it became "did he died?"
then obvious troll became obvious and "did he deathed?" became popular.
its sooo funny reading the youtube comments and seeing ppl be like WTFFF at people asking if ppl died in a video about someone dropping a birthday cake

The meme originated from Break.com. I know since I witnessed its popularity increase from Break to just about everywhere else. Feel free to go check ancient Break videos with pages of "did he died" and every single variation thereof. They're still doing it now probably without any knowledge of their influence to the internet. Also "FAKE" was another meme gaining steam among Break users but didnt gain popularity in the rest of the internet. You post "FAKE" on any video thats clearly not just to infuriate others, "I can see the strings FAKE".

this could also be from the 1999 movie "Boondock Saints" when Rocco accidentaly shoots a cat he asks "is it dead?"

This is a meme. If you look at every Keyboard Cat video, several "did he die?" comments are found.

If I were you, I'd provide examples of the videos with the comments, and for images I suggest taking screencaps of comments.

Actually, this IS a meme. It fits the requirements for a meme, such as imitation and mutation. It usually goes in the form of “Did X die?” for example “Did the lizard die” ,“Did the robot die”, “did the house die”, or “did the sky die”. Also on several occasions there is the phrase “Did he live?”
So yes, it has both imitation and mutation and is a meme.

It should just be "did he died?" That's the main way I've seen it written. "Did he die" is a normal everyday way of using it. The purposefully poor grammar is part of the meme itself.

This is most definitely a meme. I can’t believe it hasn’t been accepted yet. It’s all over youtube. Basically any video with an accident or fail has people saying “did x died” and confused people who don’t get it saying “WTF”. This can’t not be a meme.

It's more commonly "did x died" rather than the grammatically correct "die". The grammar fail is somehow part of the meme. It may have started as someone's innocent english fail but I could be wrong. More research is needed.
I'm going to find some examples. Trust me, there's millions on youtube.

Guys I think I can answer the origin of this meme. It actually began on the FOX message board for the TV show "24" back in 2002. A thread was started regarding the character Teri Bauer called "is teri died?" by a poster with numerous grammatical errors. The original poster was ripped mercilessly and hilarity ensued, and it became the thread that would not "died". I remember this because I used to read that board regularly back when I still watched that show.

I wholeheartedly agree. Jessie posted "Is Teri Died?" and then later on Falconr (Falconer from the 24 forum) posted "Is Christian Kane Died?" on Watch With Kristin in 2006, and started the spoiler wars…

Kindergarten Cop? According to IMDB, a kid named Lowell asks "Did she die?" "Did they die?". Close, but appears to be a miss. Notice no grammar error.

Did He Died? spotted here at 0:57 (But instead, the saying was: “is he died?”)

    Situation:
Beaker (a Muppet), plays a ballad then starts to sing. The viewers then post annotations about his terrible singing. He moves so he can be seen by the viewers. Annotations then flood the space. He moves, hitting one of the candles, causing his costume on fire and runs around, messing some annotations. Annotations of his EPIC FAIL!!! appears. A last annotation appears on the center of the video (gray) saying: is he died?
He then stands up, looks at all the annotations, wheezes, and falls.
    I LOL’d! XD

I was kinda hoping there were vids of people getting seriously hurt and vids of people actually dying off camera. Kinda like a game-show. "Now time for your favorite game show, DID HE DIE!!! A gameshow where we show vids and pics of people doing the insane and you have to guess weither the in fact died or not, then reveal the conclusion." I would DVR this.

About the origin, I know exactly where this is from. This is not from Youtube, its from the old Nothingtoxic website which was a video sharing website that showed videos like accidents and car crashes, fights etc, sort of how liveleak used to be. It is from 2005, there used to be a user called Horseface something and the bastard would post this in every single video, eventually I started seeing it on Youtube and thought wtf, then it just spread from there.

It was originally used on Ebaumsworld before Youtube even started. Probably around 2002 or 2003.
