Overview

4chan Cup is a series of e-sport tournaments in which 16 teams representing various boards on 4chan compete against each others in the Japanese football video game Pro Evolution Soccer. Each tournament match is webcast in real-time on the video game streaming platform Twitch.

Background

The inaugural 4chan Summer Cup was held among 16 teams from August 6th to 9th in 2011, with each game livecast via Twitch user Germanbro’s stream.[1] The /a/ (anime & manga) board won the tournament over the /ck/ (food & cooking) board in the final round.



Pro Evolution Soccer

Pro Evolution Soccer is a football video game series that began including an “online play” mode with the PlayStation 2 release of Pro Evolution Soccer 5 on February 7th, 2006. In October 2010, Pro Evolution Soccer 2011 was released, which was the first game used in a 4chan Cup tournament (shown below, right).

2012 4chan Winter Cup

The 2012 4chan Winter Cup[2] ran from January 5th to the 8th in 2012, in which 16 teams competed with the /k/ (weapons) board winning against the /sp/ (sports) board in the final round.

2012 4chan Spring Babby Cup

The 2012 4chan Spring Babby Cup[4] was held on two consecutive weekends from March 23rd to April 1st in 2012 as a qualification tournament for the larger 4chan Cup games. The tournament was won by the /m/ (music) board after defeating the /3/ (3DCG) board in the final round.

2012 4chan Summer Cup

The 2012 4chan Summer Cup[5] was held on two weekends from July 13th to the 21st in 2012, in which 24 teams competed against each other in six groups of four. The /sp/ (sports) board won the tournament 4-0 against the /int/ (international) board in the final round.

2012 4chan Autumn Babby Cup

The 2012 4chan Autumn Babby Cup[6] was held on two weekends from October 12th to the 21st in 2012, in which 32 teams competed with the /wg/ (wallpapers/general) board was victorious over the /r9k/ (robot 9000) board in the finals. This was the last tournament to use the game Pro Evolution Soccer 2012.

2013 4chan Winter Cup

The 2013 4chan Winter Cup[7] was the first to use Pro Evolution Soccer 2013 and was held in three consecutive weekends from February 8th to the 24th in 2013. The /sp/ (sports) board won the tournament for a second time after defeating the /toy/ (toys) board in the final match.

2013 4chan Spring Babby Cup

The 2013 4chan Spring Babby Cup[8] was played during three weekends from May 3rd to the 19th in 2013, in which various teams that failed to reach the 2013 4chan Winter Cup competed against each other. The /mlp/ (My Little Pony) board won by defeating the /tv/ (television & film) board 4-0 in the final.

Dragongate

On May 23rd, 2013, the /sp/ (sports) board manager Loli posted evidence that the /n/ (transportation) board manager Dragonfang was using several other aliases, including the /cm/ (cute/male) board manager Kageyama and the former /sp/ manager Torres Mcllroy. The controversy led to /sp/ having both cup titles removed and was subsequently referred to as “Dragongate.”[9]



2013 4chan Summer Cup

The 2013 4chan Summer Cup[10] was held for three weekends from August 16th to September 1st in 2013 and used the PESJP[11] modified version of Pro Evolution Soccer 2013. The /wg/ (wallpapers/general) board was victorious in the final against the /mu/ (music) board.

2013 4chan Autumn Babby Cup

The 2013 4chan Autumn Babby Cup[12] was held for three weekends from November 15th to December 1st in 2013, with the /toy/ (toys) board winning against the /fa/ (fashion) board in the finals.

2014 4chan Winter Cup

The 2014 4chan Winter Cup[13] was held for three weekends from February 14th to March 2nd in 2014 and was the first to use the game Pro Evolution Soccer 2014. The /trv/ (travel) board won the tournament against the /a/ (anime & manga) board in the final round.
