Overview

Marina Shifrin's "I Quit" Video is an interpretative dance video uploaded by producer Marina Shifrin as a public letter of resignation from Next Media Animation (NMA) in September 2013. In the video, Shifrin informs her boss that she is quitting and explains her reasons in subtitles while dancing to the song “Gone” by American rapper Kanye West.

Background

On September 28th, Shifrin posted her resignation dance video to YouTube, in which she confesses her disappointment with the company’s focus on viewership over quality of editorial content. Within the first five days, the video received over 11.8 million views and 14,100 comments.



Notable Developments

On the following day, Redditor canausernamebetoolon submitted the resignation to the /r/videos[1] subreddit, where it gained more than 14,900 up votes and 1,300 comments in the next four days. Also on September 29th, 2013, the video was highlighted by news sites Gawker[2] and The Huffington Post.[3] On September 30th, YouTuber Brenna Jennings uploaded a parody version of Shifrin's video, in which she sarcastically announces that she is quitting her job as a work-at-home mother (shown below). Within 72 hours, the video garnered upwards of 250,000 views and 230 comments.



Next Media Animation's Response

On October 1st, NMA uploaded a response to the resignation video in which the company's employees dance to the same Kanye West track while announcing that they are hiring (shown below).



Job Offers

On October 2nd, Shifrin appeared as a guest on The Queen Latifah Show and was offered a staff position on the talk show by host Dane Owens (shown below, left). The same day, the Israeli-based marketing and communications agency Y&R Israel uploaded a promotional dance video via YouTube, offering Shifrin a job and espousing the benefits of working at the company (shown below, right).



On October 3rd, Shfrin tweeted a response to the @YR_Israel Twitter feed that she thought the video was "amazing."
