About

#Everybodyspurts is a hashtag often used with uploads of Vine videos in which the subject stares at the camera with dark liquid coming out of their mouth while listening to the 1992 song “Everybody Hurts” by the rock band R.E.M.

Origin

On February 9th, 2013, Vine user Marlo Meekins and her husband Nick Cross uploaded videos in which Meekins turns her head towards the camera while drooling a dark liquid from her mouth with “Everybody Hurts” playing in the background (shown below).

Spread

On February 13th, 2013, digital artist Lacey Micallef (a.k.a. LulInternet) tweeted a link to a Vine mimicking Meekins’ video, which has since been removed from Vine. Below is an archived video from vines.s3.amazonaws.com. Right-click the video and press “Play”.

On the following day, Vine user Russell Alton uploaded a copycat video titled “Everybody Spurts (cover of @fartpalace’s cover of @marlomeekins)” (shown below, left). Also on February 14th, Vine user Shaady uploaded another video mimicking the same format with the added hashtag “#everybodyspurts” (shown below, right).

In the following six months, dozens of other videos were uploaded under the hashtag.[1] On February 18th, the Internet news blog The Daily Dot[2] published an article about the video fad. On July 4th, 2013, TheFineBros YouTube channel uploaded a video featuring notable YouTubers reacting to various Vine videos, including those uploaded under the hashtag #everybodyspurts (shown below). In the first two months, the video gathered upwards of 5.3 million views and 56,000 comments.
