Fake Google Hangouts are phony posts on the Google+ social networking service that mimic the stream notifications created after someone has completed a “Hangout” group video chat session.

Director of YouTube’s Next Lab, Timothy Shey, created the first fake Hangout with a post[1] that read “Tim Shey is not hanging out with you right now” on July 7th, 2011.

That day several other Google+ users created fake Hangouts with various celebrities including Leonardo DiCaprio and Mark Zuckerberg.

GigaOM[2] published a story titled “Google Hangout has already become a meme” on July 7th, 2011.

Hangout Service

Hangouts are group video chats within Google+ that can support a maximum of 10 people at a time.

The poster’s image thumbnail is 48×48. The hangout members are 32×32.
