About

Judge Claude Frollo (better known as simply Frollo) is a Disney character, and is the main antagonist in the movie The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Due to his religious nature, combined with his evil personality, Frollo is seen as one of the darkest villains in Disney history. Online, his quotes, alongside the controversial song Hellfire, became subject to Youtube Poop videos, in a similar vein to Disney antagonist Gaston.

Origin

The character of Claude Frollo originates from the Victor Hugo novel of the same name. In the novel, Frollo is portrayed as the Archdeacon of Notre Dame; highly intelligent, yet easily irritated. One night, Frollo finds and rescues an abandoned baby Quasimodo on the steps of the cathedral. Instead of raising the deformed hunchback reluctantly, Frollo willingly raises Quasimodo as his own son. All of this, however, decays, when he becomes infatuated with the gypsy Esmeralda.[1] The rest of the novel shows Frollo slowly dive into madness, and becomes not unlike the version of him as portrayed in the Disney film.

In the Disney adaptation of the novel, Frollo is described as a heavily religious Parisian justice minister, who is best known for his ruthlessness in upholding "justice" and utilizing his religious status to justify any of his deeds; be it good or evil.[2] Instead of finding Quasimodo on the steps of Notre Dame, he unwillingly kills Quasimodo's gypsy mother, unknowingly doing such within the boundaries of sanctuary of the cathedral. Realizing his sin, Frollo reluctantly agrees to raise Quasimodo, but continues to treat him as subhuman. Similar to the novel, Frollo becomes infatuated with Esmeralda, but goes to even greater lengths to take her for himself (such as ordering the burning of a farmhouse with its family of wrongly-accused gypsy sheltering.)

History

Although the history of Frollo's meme is unknown, he has been known under the following submemes:

Frollo and Gaston

Frollo and Gaston referrs to the then-popular combination videos featuring Claude Frollo and Beauty and the Beast antagonist Gaston. The earliest known video to feature the duo together can be seen in "Gaston and Frollo Get a Life," uploaded on July 5th, 2010 by YouTuber DinnerWarrior. (shown below)

Throughout the years, the concept of pairing Frollo and Gaston together proved popular enough to result in a small slew of videos featuring the villainous duo.

The Frollo Show

he Frollo ShoM

The Frollo Show was a YouTube Poop series created by YouTuber chincherrinas in 2011. Although it utilizes footage from various sources, it's primarily focused on the misadventures of Frollo.

Hellfire

Hellfire is one of the songs performed by Frollo in the Disney movie. The song is notable for featuring a depiction of Hell and pieces of the Catholic religion; all of which is typically considered inappropriate subjects for younger child audiences. Despite the sensitive context, and ensuing controversy of changing the film's rating, it is considered by many to be one of the darkest songs ever produced by Disney.[3]
