About

On the popular TV show, American Idol, Larry Platt (General Larry Platt), age 62 from Atlanta, Georgia, was auditioning for the judges, and said he was to sing a song he wrote called “Pants On The Ground”. This was to show that some people need to pull their pants up, as many people tend to sag their pants. His catchy song made the judges laugh and later start to sing along. He did not continue on however, for his age was 62 and the maximum age was 28.

[edit: include season, episode, and airdate of American Idol]

The original upload of the video has been removed. Here is another.

This is a certafiable meme. It’s spread FAR faster than most, dominating Facebook and Twitter since it aired.

This has gotten around everywhere, but it seems so fleeting. Look at those trends. It was overnight, but I’m not sure if it has any staying power.

Major case of Benjamin Button effect. The mainstream derivatives and user-generated content happened simultaneously. That kind of thing always makes me question how relevant it is to place this into the context of an Internet sensation. I think we can almost take for granted that the first few rounds of American Idol will feature a contestant or two that gives an “awesomely bad” performance that people identify as being exploitable.

I just sent in an update. The DJ Steve Porter Remix is out. I think these should be called flash memes. The originate in mainstream media then are reflected in the tubes. If there is a large(er) spike in interest then a quick fade like Chris says then this could be a “flash meme”. A similar case would be “I’m gonna let you finish”.
