‘Grandpa Gaga’ was a viral video posted by GraD87 on June 27, 2010. Though the original video did not receive many views, it is still regarded as the original. The video shows a man, maybe in his late 70s or early 80s, dancing to Lady Gaga’s “Poker Face.”
Another video, with much less views, but copied over many times was uploaded on June 30, 2010. Entitled ‘Another video of Dancing Grandpa’, it was with a different song, and Grandpa preforming even more moves.
A few variations are still popping up as this meme is still developing, but here is a Dance Remix:
Spread and Popularity
Many people had copied the video, claiming it as their own. In most cases, the user would upload the video with a different title and not much else. Most of these videos got any number of views, mostly less than the original.
Some search insights, as shown above, conclude that the interest for the video peaked at about the time when most of the videos were being copied, and then uploaded to YouTube.
A controversy erupted when the copied video with the most views was taken down because of a supposed copyright claim by Faction News Finds. However, a visit to the YouTube page of FactionFinds, reveals that the video that they claim to be their own was not on there, and no indication as to why it was taken down. However, on July 5th, 2010, it was found that on that same video that FactionFinds claimed as their own, a message instead cam up as ‘This video is no longer available due to a copyright claim by GraD87.’
