Hetalia
Hetalia

About

Hetalia refers to a popular manga webcomic and Anime series first written by Hidekaz Himaruya and later adapted by Studio DEEN. The series has garnered a significant online fanbase since it's original creation, spawning a number of fan creations such as Fan Art and Fanfiction, as well as creating a number of notable sub-memes.

Premise

Hetalia is a comedy short following anthropomorphised countries of the world, re-enacting historical events within a comedic fashion. Primarily the show follows the main character of Italy, as well as his fellow Axis Powers Germany and Japan. On top of this, there is also the Allied Forces, consisting of America, Britain, France, Russia and China, as well as a host of other countries.

History

Hidekaz Himaruya originally created Hetalia as an online webcomic. So far four tankōbon have been published by Gentosha Comics, the first on March 28, 2008, the second on December 10, 2008, the third on May 20, 2010 and the fourth on June 30, 2011.

60 Years Ago. I Was a Shut-in And thus, right. Same here... san Italy-kun. please treat me favorably bo Think nothing of it. YOU ARE NOW FRIENDS WITH GERMANY AND ITALY Hey, your hair is 5o nice and silky. If's pretty! Let's hang out sometime! ㄗ You! Knock it off! We're guests here! Can't you behave for once? GERMANY LEVELS UP! Ah, never you mind. It's iust a little Japanese natural phenomenon. Er... can you explain what's going on around us, Japan? +1 TOUGHNESS +2 BRAWN

An anime adaptation of Hetalia: Axis Powers was announced on July 24, 2008, produced by Studio DEEN, also known for their work on the Higurashi franchise. The show lasted from January 24, 2009 to March 5, 2010, running for 52 episodes. A second adaptation was also announced on December 10, 2009, retitled as Hetalia: World Series, and ran for 48 episodes. A fifth season, this time titled Hetalia: The Beautiful World, was also created, running for 20 episodes from January 25 to June 21, 2013. A sixth season, Hetalia: The World Twinkle was also announced. A movie adaptation, Hetalia: Paint it White! was also released on June 5, 2010.

Online Relevance

In North America, Hetalia is licensed by Funimation, and is available for streaming on their website. The show has gained a large online following on many sites, including on Tumblr[1], Reddit[2], 4chan's /a/ (Anime and Manga) board[3], Fanpop[4], My Anime List[5], and DeviantART[6]. There are numerous sites that provide episodic information about the series, such as the Hetalia wiki[7], TV Tropes[8] and Anime News Network[9]. In addition, the Hetalia Facebook page also has over 300,000 likes[10].

Controversy

There has definitely been some controversy about the show and comic due to it making light of many of the events surrounding WWII. People have also voiced their displeasure on the stereotypes portrayed by the countries as some have found them offensive. (examples: "America" is annoying and often shown eating hamburgers, Italy is portrayed as a pasta-loving weakling)

Fandom

The Hetalia series has spawned a significant online fanbase since it’s creation, which has created much fanart and fanfiction. On the Japanese fanart site Pixiv, there are over 50,000 images tagged under “ヘタリア”[11], as well as over 46,000 videos on the video sharing website Nico Nico Douga[12]. On DeviantART, there are also over 1,000,000 images tagged related to the series[13], as well as over 111,000 stories on Fanfiction.net[14]

Dance Dance World Revolution

Dance Dance World Revolution is an avatar dance meme featuring anime characters dressed in the color schemes of different country flags dancing to a looped version of the number “Positive Vibe” by Newgrounds member NIGHTkilla. It started with a video of the character America, but spread out to other countries and series as well. The characters representing the countries commonly use the character models of the Hetalia cast, but fan made characters are also used.

Marukaite Chikyuu

Marukaite Chikyuu (Draw a circle, that's the Earth) is a meme that originated from the ending theme for the first and second seasons of Hetalia. The original version was sung by the character North Italy (voiced by Daisuke Namikawa), but it spread out to other members of the Hetalia cast as well. This inspired fans to create their own versions of the song with even more characters from the series.

Become One With Russia

Become One With Russia is a meme based on a line often spoken by Russia's in-show sister, Belarus, while around him, due to her obsessive infatuation with her brother. Eventually, fans took this one creepy phrase and turned it inside out, twisting the meaning so that Russia is the one who asks others to ‘become one’ with him.

    I've been waiting for this one! I don't know if it's quite a meme but maybe a subculture?

    @Drpepperfan

    I'd love to help with the page but I'm an awful writer. I can make some suggestions though like how the fandom is so crazy the series usually turns people off.
    Here's a good wiki page for some of the memes (i.e. PASTAAAA):
    http://hetalia.wikia.com/wiki/Memes_in_fandom
    Also add the Hetalia vs. Homestuck
    And when national disasters happen a lot of people will write/draw a fanfic where the nation is hurt which usually ends up offending people. (i.e. People would say England was having "heartburn" during the London Riots.)
    I hope some of this helps!

    How about this Usagi? You may not think you are that good of a writer, and i don't know if that's true, but I'll add you as editor, and you can add a bunch of this info to the best of your ability. I'll edit your work to slightly improve it. How about that?

    @UsagiChan I seems like your an editor/writer? I am too. ,:3 I was thinking about adding memes with in the fandom like "KOLKOLKOL" and "5 meters" good idea? And anyways, there missing some sub memes. I dont know how to add them.

  • RandomMan - 12 years ago

    @Poochie
    With not knowing how to add a sub-meme. You mean that like adding links and images, or more like the complete thing?

    If it’s the first, I can add that for you when you’re done if you want. In case of the second: It’s no problem, just start typing and when you’re done click on save.

    @Random Man

    I ment like the whole thing. As you can see i already added a lot of photos and stuff and added more to origin. I dont think i can handle all of this (school work TT _ TT ) But I will try my best XD anyways, i noticed that some of the hetalia memes like dance dance world revolution are already a sub meme of some thing like deviant art but i think they would go better into hetalia. Can i change that?

    0
  • RandomMan - 12 years ago

    @Poochie
    I already added a few sub-memes as you can see. This is the basic principle you can follow. A small description is enough, it doesn’t need to be 3 pages long. The sub-memes you want to describe don’t have a page on KYM yet, so your description will probably be a little longer.

    For adding “Dance Dance World Revolution” to the sub-memes list. You need to be an entry moderator for that.

    +1 for Subculture

    Something that should be noted about Hetalia. Since the creator has kept a mostly light hearted approach to the Nations deal, the fandom pretty much spiralled from there, creating fan theories about the nations, as well as a ton of fanfiction dealing with the consequences of being the personification of a nation, and what may happen when corporations or malicious people take interest in them, and to fiction only involving the nations as people, and creating a story from there. Not to mention the absolutely bloodthirsty patriotism from the fanbase when it comes to…of all things, shipping, or pairing the nations together. The Kinkmeme for the Hetalia fandom has gotten so large, it includes, not only just the porn, but you can get some incredibly detailed normal fanfiction from it as well. Thanks to the fact that all the characters are personifications, this pretty much makes someones History class seem more like a story involving characters…which leads to the stuff almost being written by itself.

    Or, in shorter terms, the Hetalia fandom is as crazy as the Homstuck community, taken up a notch by the fact that most of the characters are male, and ripe for the picking by rabid fangirls. Not to mention history nerds.

    (I apologise if my opinion if it upsets anyone.)

    The fanbase is very eccentric and generally quite annoying, but I still enjoy a bit of it from time to time. Besides, not all of the fans are that bad.

    I think it's just the concepts of countries being, in most people's minds, attractive young men and women that puts people off, as well as them interacting, sometimes sexually. As for the WW11 jokes and such, we commonly make light of what is or was shocking or frightening, such as Ebola with Ebola-chan.

    I can see why people get offended by the stereotypes and the war jokes, but in the end it is just comedy and shouldn't be taken seriously unless it REALLY asks for it. For example, if Hetalia was racist and spoke out against certain nations or races, or it completely mocked the Holocaust, it would have to be considered offensive and taken seriously.

    I just get slightly offended by the way people judge my lot because of our stereotype, who's referred to as Britain. I shouldn't, but I'm sensitive to people who think that we still live in the Victorian age. >:(

    Complaining about how there's stereotypes in Hetalia is like complaining about how there's cake in a bakery.

    +7
  • Bailoroc - 8 years ago

    I watched a few episodes of this, but I don't remember if I seen all of them or not. Or maybe there were a sequel I didn't watch.

    What this show did teach me, if nothing else, is that stereotypes are in no way universal. Speaking as an American, when we think of a "stereotypical Italian", some of us think of someone tied to the Sicilian mob, thanks to movies and books about the mafia.

    So seeing Italy being portrayed as a cowardly crybaby was a bit of a shocker to me. Not to mention we also think of Russians as either being super-serious guys who miss the U.S.S.R. or a loud but fun guy who likes partying with vodka, where as Hetalia's Russia is just kind of… odd.

    So yeah, some of Japan's stereotypes of nations don't match the Western (especially America's) stereotypes.
