Hot Choclety Milk

About

Hot Choclety Milk, an intentional misspelling of "Hot Chocolate Milk," refers to an MS Paint cartoon illustration of a spider offering a mug of hot chocolate that began circulating on the microblogging site Tumblr in July 2013. The humor is similar to other Tumblr-based memes like Doge and the comic "Sweet Bro and Hella Jeff".

Origin

On July 17th, 2013, Tumblr user Burgrs posted a cartoon drawing of a spider holding a steaming mug with the caption “helo would u like some of this hot choclety milk?” (shown below). In the first two months, the post gained over 58,900 notes.

Spread

On August 3rd, 2013, the single topic Tumblr blog Hot Choclety Spider^[1] was launched to highlight a collection of notable "choclety milk spider" drawings. On August 13th, Tumblr user dangancrackfessions^[7] posted a photoshopped parody in which the spider character is replaced by Sakura Oogami, one of the recurring characters from the Japanese video game series Danganronpa (shown below). On August 25th, Tumblr user ruugazakis^[6] reposted the original spider illustration, garnering more than 2,300 notes in the following month.

On August 29th, Tumblr user thepurpleredwagon^[2] posted an audio recording of the phrase “hello would you like some of this how chocolaty milk?,” which garnered upwards of 56,700 notes in the next three weeks. On September 14th, Tumblr user gmshairdye^[3] posted another parody illustration featuring the face of Spencer Clawson, a contestant on the reality TV series Big Brother (shown below, left). That same day, the single topic Tumblr blog karkats-face-on-things^[4] posted its own parody of the spider drawing with the eyes and mouth of the Homestuck character Karkat superimposed on its head (shown below, right).
